[TV] Talk about the last TV you watched, the catchall thread

I think my problem with it is two fold:

1) It reminds me a lot of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which I never liked.

2) There was no introduction to the world we're presented at all. They just jump right into the first episode as if it's any episode. Except there are so many ridiculous concepts from the get-go that all I'm doing is just trying to keep up with the ridiculousness rather than enjoy it. I'm all like, "Candy people? What? Cloud people/world? What? Princess scientist in a fantasy realm? What?" There's no explanation of anything, like why there's only one human (and his dog, who is magical or...something?) or anything.

Normally, this would be fine. It's similar to, say, the old 80s cartoons like The Smurfs or something, where you could watch any episode. Except The Smurfs wasn't blatantly trying so hard to throw all these ridiculous concepts at you like a 4-year old telling a story.
Dude trust me, this show can be INSANELY good if you give it a chance. Some episodes are silly and weird, and some are actually really well written and show deepness to the characters. Also I understand how you don't like how the show doesn't explain the setting in the beginning of the show and that is a chink in the armor. Pendleton Ward(the creator) actually explained it in an interview as a post-apoctalyptic world where after the atomic bombs decimated Earth destroying most of society, magic was able to creep back into the world. Also its theorized that the candy people were made from the radioactive fall-out. The show doesn't explain the setting to keep the mystery of what the "Great Mushroom War" was going.

Also the show has a few D & D references every once in a while. I like that. I understand why you don't like it, this show is a love or hate thing but I do suggest giving it a second chance.

I usually describe Adventure Time as what you would get if you put an assorted mixture of toys in a room with a 5 year old, recorded it, then showed the videos to the same kid when they were 20 and had them point out just how disturbing some of it is... and animated the results.

The thing about there being (maybe) one human left isn't explained for one reason: Finn doesn't know what happened because he was too young to know/understand when he was separated from his parents. Jake's Mom and Dad took him in and raised him like a son after they found him alone in the woods. That's basically all we know about Finn's back story. There are some references to Rainicorns eating humans, but it's also implied they stopped when humans ether became too rare to hunt or they developed the human-flavored tofu stuff, so it's unlikely that is why they are all gone. A big part of the show is about Finn ether finding out what happened or just learning to let it go.

Jake's powers are explicitly magical. No, we have never been told how got them, but we know his parents were "normal" dogs in that they couldn't stretch or shape themselves (though Jake's Dad was kinda bad assed and knew magic).

I honestly never even considered this, but recently I was looking for books set in a post apocalyptic landscape, and I found wikipedia's list of post- apocalyptic fiction.
Television 2010 War Adventure Time
The adventures of Jake the dog and Finn the only known remaining human in the post-appocalyptic land of Ooo; living hundreds of years after the "Great Mushroom War".[109]
Changed my persepective of that show.

Also I had a similar view regarding the show at first, but I continued to give it a chance at the behest of my friends, and it eventually grew on me. I appreciate all the D&D references they sprinkle throughout, and it's really hard to not love John DiMaggio's Jake the Dog:

It's weird thinking of it as a post-apocalyptic show because the show is generally subtle about it. Most things based in a post-apocalyptic world just throw the fact that its a post-apocalyptic world right in your face. Not this show however, the fact that its a post-apocalyptic world is merely a piece of the puzzle that is the Land of Ooo.

Adventure Time kinda reminds me or a more wacky and jubilant version of Metalocalypse in that it seems to be about nothing really...then, out of the blue, it is suddenly about SOMETHING.

They don't throw it in your face? I'm pretty sure there is an unexploded atomic bomb in the opening credits.
Well yeah but it shows it in like a second, so more like lightly lobbing it in your face is the proper term.

Egg-XACTLY! This show is whatever the hell it wants to be. Silly, dramatic, somber, shocking, a bunch of themes this show can give.

Yeah, you are.

As to my most recent TV viewing. Hulu has the first episode of season 3 of Raising Hope up on the site. I think that unfortunately means that they won't carry the whole season. Oh, bittorrents, I wish I could quit you. (yeah, yeah, I pirate TV if I can't get it any other way online.)

You have no idea. Supernatural is basically Buffy, but a bit more serious and FULL of co-dependency. I haven't seen a family this dysfunctional since the Bundy's.
You see, I was obsessed with Buffy through my high school years. So...I'm getting in deep.

Also, Amreican Netflix is taking ovber my life. Phineas and Ferb! Jet loves this show...and I think I love it as well. It makes me laugh more than any sitcom.

Also Jet popped on Star trek: DS9 by accident..and now that's all he wants to watch. I don't think he even understands but he knows there are aliens and "Dax is SO BOOTIFUL!" so he keeps at it.

Phineas & Ferb is a great show for kids and adults alike. Though I will admit to having... a complaint? No, not that more or else an oddity I have with shows like this. Anyone who watches the show knows it is not just about Phineas & Ferb, I mean hell at one time there are 3 plots meshing together! So why do we make shows like these name specific if the plot doesn't completely revolve arround them! Almost always we have the Agent P segments and other times they throw in a Candace sub-plot. So with all these characters and sub-plots why do they let Phineas & Ferb get the title drop?! WHY SWAMPY WHY?!!!

Once again not a complaint, I just find the entire concept of name specific titles that focus around more than just the title characters baffling even to this day.

Yeah, I can't believe Canadians are so fucked over on Netflix and they have the gall to charge us the same price.

There are ways to circumvent it and get to see the American selection that aren't too difficult though. I hope it doesn't become too widespread because Netflix will probably have to clamp down on it or face the wrath of the FUCKINGCRTC.

Finally got to start season 2 of Sherlock since it's on Netflix now. Watched episode 1 earlier tonight.

The way the cliffhanger was disarmed felt kind of crap, but they made of for it in the end.

Loving this show. I wish there were more episodes per season, but it's nice to have such compressed greatness that no part feels wasteful.

BBC series usually aren't as long as the American seasons. They also don't tend to run for year after year until the show grows irrelevant, with the exception of those that go the opposite way and have been running pretty much since TV was invented.

Speaking of brit tv, anyone seen Beaver Falls?

For it's teen show-ish subject matter it's pretty incredible how good it can be at times...

It's like Jet and I have switched shows.

He keeps asking for Star Trek. He has even started fan boying over Dax to the point that he says he's going to kiss her.

However...I really want to watch more Phineas and Ferb but I feel foolish just watching it on my own.

Don't be, its a good program(though I feel there are a bit too many musical numbers). If it makes you feel more adult, the dad on that show is the writer/director of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the Irving character is Jack MacBrayer ,30 Rock and Conan fame, and Seth Green also played a role or too. A loooooooooooootta guest-stars on that show.

Season Premiere week on CBS.

How I Met Your Mother. Same show, still great. Ted's a huge ass. Other characters are wonderful and more than make up for it. It's season 8, if you haven't seen the show...

Partners. I had to check to make sure my tv wasn't on fire. Hopefully things get toned down from the pilot, because the show was about 3 sitcom characters and a cartoon. Laugh track was forced (and yes it can be done well), but there was some good stuff there. I think it has a chance of getting better with some time.

Wow, I had no idea there was a Breaking Bad podcast where Vince Gilligan talks to cast crew about the episode that just aired. And it's been basically going the whole run of the show. For a guy that listens to like 30 podcasts a week....man.

Finished the original "The Tick", now I'm watching the live-action one with Patrick Warburton. Less a super hero show, and more of a satire. Still good though.

Ah shit, I lost track of HIMYM mid-season 7. I need to catch up. Outside of that I've really only been watching Adventure Time and am waiting on South Park's new season to start. Not much on tv I find interesting anymore.

Ugh, man, Sons of Anarchy is becoming borderline unwatchable. I loved the show for the first few seasons but by this point I feel I'm only watching out of habit.

Gemma is becoming completely unbearable to watch on screen. Katie Segal is doing her best but fuck are they giving her the worst fucking shit to work with.
