Video Game News and Miscellany

My GF bought Civ 7 and she's played it all day for the last couple days. Haven't heard any major complaints from her yet...
GF says there's no issues with the core gameplay. Firaxis just posted some stuff about QOL improvements, but she says she hasn't really felt there were any issues that would have prevented her from recommending the game.

I tried the Open Beta last night. I made my Hunter and Palico then did the first hunt which was really fun and very pretty.

My computer got a “good” on the benchmark as well. I turned off that frames generator thing to play the beta. There were a few laggy points, but I wasn’t surprised as I was following a monster to finish it off and we passed through an area with a herd of endemic creatures doing their thing along with collectible bugs, plants etc and the glowing line to stuff we had in World.

The beta was only available after 7 pm Pacific last night (11pm local) so I just did the one hunt. The Beta took ages to download shaders and get itself ready to go.

I plan to try again tonight.

I tried the benchmark on my Steam Deck. It too took ages to download the shaders. It made a brave effort on the benchmark, but pooped just as the hunter and handler entered the area with thunder and lightning.

This is with ray tracing on maximum, so I guess I can run it.

The Playstation Network is down right now. I can still play games on it, since I don't play online games, but it sucks for millions of others.

What worries me, though, is the last time it was down this long, it was due to a hack where many accounts were compromised.

Say hello to my external hdd with GOG installers.
On the other hand, literally no computers these days have an internal optical drive anymore, and external ones are becoming harder to find too - I have shelves full of dvds and CDs I struggle to install.

Oh boy. I can't remember the last time I was excited for a FPS to come out! Well, actually yeah it was probably Darktide but still that was a long time ago.

This is an intriguing game trailer: Bye Sweet Carole
I've been following that for a bit. That's from the same person/company as Remothered 1 and 2, which were love letters to the Clocktower series that were a bit too flawed to really hit it big. Hoping this one does better.

I'm not sure how I feel about treating constantly updated/Live Service™ games as if they're years old for this kind of analysis. The League of Legends or DotA or Fortnite that people are playing now aren't the same games they were playing 5 years ago or more.

I'd also say that treating gamers as one big bloc is comely useless but now.
Steam - and even gog - won't capture all time spent on older games because they simply don't need any interaction.
How are you going to determine how much time I spent on Diablo II or Daggerfall this year? Good luck.
On the other hand, for non-online-service games, peach of modern games would push those numbers up, especially in some specific markets (e.g. Brazil, Argentina).

There's also the fact that most PC rigs can be very expensive, especially outside the US... we've also been in a global recession since 2016 (and it's only going to get worse) and for much of that period GPUs were a best overpriced because of crypto. So who even has a rig to run the latest and greatest?

It's possible that this article might be overstating things a bit, but I agree that the current climate is not conducive to carving out new branches/forms of entertainment.

The entire article could be summed up with this segment.

That's it: the price starts at $500 for a Meta Quest 3 and it only goes up. I can get an entire PS5 for that! It's not really even a lack of games, I could probably rattle off a dozen or more really great VR games. It's just that it costs too damn much to get into a hobby.

I've been thinking of getting a Quest 3, but with Zuckerburg going all in on Trump, AI, and other nonsense, I don't think I will.

I might wait to see what the next Valve headset looks like, though it'll likely cost a fair bit more, to put it mildly.

Picked up a Meta Quest 2 for 200 bucks two Christmases ago. The kids get into it in spurts. It's nice to have around, but not for more than we paid for it.

GF put a 50 gallon fish tank in the same room the VR is set up, and the only one it can be, so until we move no VR for me.

Trailer for FBC: Firebreak

If I'm not mistaken this is a multiplayer co-op horde shooter set in the Federal Bureau of Control, aka The Oldest House, the same agency/location Control was set in. I don't know if it will have asymmetrical versus, or if it's only PvE.

As someone who has played all of the Remedy games, and is a big fan, everything in this trailer makes sense to me. Everything except why they chose to do this.

Oh no, all these games I didn't even know were being made were cancelled...

I feel like they had to really stretch to get the list to ten.

Yeah. Football 25 just skipping a year to release as Football 26 is a total non-story.

That said, it was interesting to learn that a multi-player Spider-Man game had been planned and canceled. I was momentarily sad, but then I realized it probably would have ended up like Gotham Knights, having to abandon much of the gameplay of the single player games in order to fit in multiplayer.
