So, will you drink Coca Cola Life?

Still, in germany the deposit is about 4x for disposable, that's why I said maybe that helped overturn the difference in cost: there is an increase in plastic-packaged products either for the consumer or for the producer. Also, if I'm not mistaken they introduced this to stop the decline of...

So, will you drink Coca Cola Life?

Germany, at least, has reusable glass bottles. The thing is they have a mandatory deposit for both reusable and disposable packaging, and it's more expensive for disposable, so I guess that helps turn around the plastic vs glass cost problem. I think it happens in other nearby countries...

    Social Attitude Test

Hmm.. I'd say it's actually the opposite. A combination of considering non-capitalist = communist and the fact that economically I consider myself to be less of an extremist precisely because I'm in Europe, but the test is not calibrated for that worldview. Anyway, that 100 impressed me a bit...

    Social Attitude Test

Radicalism 88.5 Socialism 100 Tenderness 56.25 These scores indicate that you are a progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a university professor. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a pragmatic attitude towards humanity in general. Your...

Obamacare: Businesses get extension, individuals don't

If an important reason of healthcare being overpriced is education being overpriced, shouldn't the government do something there too? I mean, not being able to get healthcare is more dramatic, but education is as much of a right to me. Actually, in a society that prides itself in equal...

Does temperature have meaning where there is no matter?

Well, the example of the Sun could lead (doesn't yet, I think) to predictions on when a strong solar eruption is going to happen, which would be super useful. I guess everything academic is so until it's capable of being practical, and then it may become incredibly so. The middle ground is hard...

Does temperature have meaning where there is no matter?

Well, temperature is definitely an absolute physical quantity, and it is useful to calculate all sorts of things that may or may not have bearing on everyday life (the dynamics inside of the Sun, movement of air currents in the atmosphere used for meteorology, etc). What I mean is that...

Planned Parenthood finally counts medicaid revenue

Or not. Consider this possibility In this case, they already get most of those benefits without the need to push, and pushing for abortions may mean a big effort for a relatively small increase in profits, besides the obvious negative moral implications and the possibility for very bad...

    America's demographic cliff

But does that mean that we need to fix the problem of keeping population growth or that we need to fix the economy/system? Rethink capitalism, think of an alternative, whatevs? It seems hard, yes, but maintaining an exponential population growth seems unwise.

    I don't think PA's Gabe is a Transphobic Bigot.

Hey, I was in a lab meeting yesterday and the thought came to my mind: The boss from the lab we work with (I'm a theorist) is a woman married to another woman. Aaaand... they have had two children together. Apparently, even if we accept more children=good, the argument about encouraging couples...

    I don't think PA's Gabe is a Transphobic Bigot.

I'm sorry if my post was out of place in content or form or tone. I trealize it is perfectly reasonable to not want to discuss or even read a cold discussion about something that generates a strong emotional response, hits close to home, etc. Also, my first paragraph was NOT directed at you...

    I don't think PA's Gabe is a Transphobic Bigot.

I think rational discussion can be had on almost any topic. It's too bad so many people do not agree... Even if there's a big argument that trumps all (e.g. 'equal rights') discussing from other points of view can reinforce, undermine or, most times, nuance our own views on a topic, allowing us...

Pink versus Blue: is gender identity important?

I think homo sapiens is certainly a loooong way from being able to not use ingroup-outgroup identity, although I also think it would be desirable. Perhaps it's so far away that one could say that it's impossible for the species homo sapiens and so much biological (as opposed to purely cultural)...
