[Movies] 1,001 Movies to See Before You Croak (Halforums Edition)

I think given the nature of this not being a top 1001, Clash of the Titans is EXTEMELY culturally relevant and definately deserves a spot.
It's not a point I feel needs too much arguing against, so I won't further. It just got my attention. Considering there's a shitty remake trouncing the memory out, I'll concede the need for Clash of the Titans on the list.

I really understand your point about the film's pacing and whether or not it's one of the greatest movies of all time, however, I think if something is referenced often in pop culture, it's something that should be watched at least one if you want to become one with the overmind :)

True. And maybe someone who didn't watch it waaay too many times as a kid (*cough*) would see it in better light than I do when I try to watch it nowadays.

Do we really need a category for foreign films?
Whoops, sorry. I thought I saw a Foreign category already listed. It might be good to put it in there since there are a great deal of good foreign movies.

If not, then here's some suggested categories for the ones I mentioned:

Foreign:
-Pan's Labyrinth (Fantasy)
-Life is Beautiful (Comedy)
-Run Lola Run (Drama)
-Seven Samurai (Action)
-Yojimbo (Action)

Addams Family Values? Feel like the first movie is all you need, really.

Action: Commando, Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, any given Bond movie, Enter the Dragon, Hard Boiled, Ong Bak, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ip Man, Old Boy, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon
War: Sergeant York, Das Boot
Crime: Oceans Eleven
Drama: Fight Club, The Truman Show
Fantasy: Big
Horror: Eraserhead
Mystery: The Sixth Sense, Lost Highway, Donnie Darko
Romance: Ghost, When Harry Met Sally, Bull Durham, Say Anything, Sideways, Edward Scissorhands, Roxanne
Sci-fi: Blade Runner, Logan's Run, District 9, The Matrix, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Total Recall, Outland, Moon
Comedy: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, seconding Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak, Spaceballs, Shaolin Soccer, Half Baked, Friday, Billy Madison, The Mask, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, Old School, Zoolander, Office Space, Caddyshack, Bloodsport, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

I'm with Quotemander: animation is not a genre, but eh:
Ghost in the Shell (sci-fi), Akira (sci-fi), My Neighbor Totoro (family), Millenium Actress (drama), Watership Down (drama), Grave of the Fireflies (war)

Also, probably doesn't deserve to be on the list, but The Man From Nowhere has some pretty sweet fight scenes.

I'd probably put Big in Family.
Fantasy would be more like Dragonheart, Sword of the Valiant, Willow, etc..

BTW, I love this thread :)
War(good god y'all):
Hamburger Hill
Full Metal Jacket
We Were Soldiers
Top Gun(?)
Inglorious Bastards
Bridge on the River Qwai
Jarhead
The Killing Fields

Ha! I have nothing to really contribute right now other then the fact I saw Springtime for Hitler up there. I can only assume North_Ranger or one our foreign
forumites added that as that is the European title for The Producers.

It just made me giggle.

I'm staring at the Comedy listing. There is no fucking way HALF of those are in the top 100 Comedy movies of all time.
Here's a thought, Charlie: tell us why some of those movies don't belong there, or better yet, offer some opinions as to what films do belong there. Also, this isn't a Top 100 Comedy films listing; it's about what are the 1,001 movies Halforumites think one should see before facing the music :p
That right there is the difference between when Charlie was a well liked and respected member of the forum, to the forum cliche Emo Hipster Try Too Hard Troll that he's become.
Comedy: O' Brother, Where Art Thou?
You are a pleasure and a delight to have here, don't ever leave :)
The Fly (Jeff Goldbloom version)
Really? Maybe it's because I'm a huge Vincent Price fan, but I'd go with the original over Goldblum's version.
Addams Family Values? Feel like the first movie is all you need, really.
The second was fantastic, but I'm going to agree, the only "must" watch is the first one.

Documentary:
Bowling for Columbine (for sanity's sake, I'll only include one Michale Moore movie, but it is culturally relevent for better or worse)
The Life and Times of Harvey Milk (you could also add Milk to Biographies)
Supersize Me
My Date with Drew
Bigger, Faster, Stronger
Added at: 20:47
I already had two Vincent Price movies up there, and pop culture wise, I think Brudlefly is more well know.

Music and Musicals:
Guys and Dolls
Rent
Repo: The Genetic Opera
Chicago
Hans Christian Anderson (Danny Kaye is awesome)
Pink Floyd's The Wall
Moonwalker
Interstella 5555
Added at: 23:45
Mystery:
Murder on the Orient Express
Momento
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte
Citizen Kane
The Maltese Falcon
Rear Window
Man this genre is under represented in current film.

Musical: An American in Paris - easily the best one that I've seen, Pink Floyd the Wall

Western: Silverado, The Searchers - best western EVER, Tombstone, Wyatt Earp - widely panned but I liked it.

Adventure: The Adventures of Robin Hood - greatest adventure movie (too bad Hollywood ignores this version when doing RH remakes)

Animation: Fritz the Cat,

Mystery: Deathtrap, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes - could also go to comedy.

Noir: Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Chinatown.

Okay, I think I've put all the movies suggested on the list, along with a few of my own. If I've missed any, lemme know.

Also, I'm NOT going to start re-categorizing the movies because of the debate over Animation. It's there, I'm certain you can live with it. And feel free to mention more comedies if you feel like it, I'll just snap more slots from some other category.

Looks like comedy might need some paring down (I was joking with Bloodsport as a comedy, although it is hilarious. Really it belongs in action, if at all). Romancing the Stone seems better suited in Adventure, and Gremlins 2 probably doesn't need to be there at all. Also, Dick? A must see? (genuinely curious here; never saw it, seems like a trifle)

Hmm, now that I think about it, I wonder if Beverly Hills Cop would be better served in adventure? Also:

Adventure: Big Trouble in Little China
Animation: Charlotte's Web
Drama: The Last Emperor
Family: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Mary Poppins
Sci-fi: Brazil
Mystery: Clue
Musical: Little Shop of Horrors

Thriller/Suspense:
Hard Candy

Horror Movies to Add:

Hard Tension
28 Days/Weeks Later
*REC/*REC2
The Descent
Rosemary's Baby
Cabin Fever
Carriers
La Horde
From Dusk Till Dawn

If I may make a suggestion/question first: Can you alphabetize the list in each category? It makes it a lot easier to see whether a movie has been listed already or not.

Next to that, I feel that some sequels/trilogy's should be up there too (like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Back to the Future), they sort of come in a package deal. So I listed them below as well.

[ACTION]
Air Force One
Batman Begins (i feel it's more action than adventure, but then I saw other comic hero movies in adventure as well, so use your own discretion)
Die Hard 2 - Die Harder
Die Hard 3 - Die Hard With a Vengeance
Face/Off
Independence Day
Lethal Weapon 2
Lethal Weapon 3
Rambo II - First Blood Part II (This one is a must I think: a classic action movie where a buff guy runs around, killing lots and lots of bad guys with over the top weapons)
Rumble in the Bronx
The Dark Knight (same as Batman Begins)
The Hunt for Red October
The Rock (one of my favorites, great action, great cast)
V for Vendetta (Really gripping, great story and inspired a real life movement)

[ADVENTURE]
Back to the Future II
Back to the Future III
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (not sure if this is the same one as the one mentioned, but I think this one is known as THE Robin Hood movie in most peoples mind)
Water World (notorious for having flopped due to bad critic reviews, but an adventure of epic proportions back in its day)

[ANIMATION]
Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (story wise it doesn't make much sense, but it stems from a game so popular they have tons of spin-offs, including this movie (with the awesome graphics), decades later)
Finding Nemo
Kung Fu Panda

[BIOGRAPHY]
The Aviator
The Pursuit of Happiness

[COMEDY]
wow this one's so full already.. :) I'll just add a few
Groundhog Day
Kick-Ass
Out of Sight (Not really sure on the Comedy tag, but it beats Action and Crime)

[CRIME]
Scarface (Say hello to my little friend! Come to think of it, I think all movies with famous quotes should be in here)

I'm gonna stop before I go on all night with this... just one more that really should be here: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain [I dunno, Romance? Fantasy? would be easier if there were a Foreign category :p]

Crime: Goodfellas, Godfather Part II (Normally I would shy away from Sequels, but this movie is as good if not better than the original).
Beauty and the Beast should go in either Animation or Musical, but it deserves a spot on there.
If you're putting Band's music video movies on there you should include Tommy
The Longest Day, is a must have War movie.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance for Western. Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, the stars don't get much bigger.

Ok the Comedy list is nearly full and there's not a single Marx Brothers film on there?
A Night at the Opera. (or Duck Soup, or any of their other films, this one's just preference as it was the first I saw all the way through).

Crime
Cool Hand Luke
Action
Casino Royale - My favourite of the Bond movies
Comedy
Amélie
Sci-Fi
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Brazil
Romance
Roman Holiday
Horror
28 Days Later

Animation:
Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame

Especially because of the dark beginning sequence; steaming horse, chased gipsy girl, death and one evil villain. Also for the Hellfire sequence, and just all the other scenes with nasty Frollo. And I absolutely like like the scene and song God help the outcasts.

Just spare me the gargoyles and the unfitting comedy elements.

P

PotaDOS

What I would call a drama, but also could be in the crime or thriller category: Michael Clayton

George Clooney is amazing.

Four Drama movies I always thought were good (not sure if they've already been listed)

A Bronx Tale
Sleepers
The Color Purple
Hachi: A Dog's tale

War:
When Trumpets Fade
The Lost Batallion
The Blue Max

History:
Life is Beautiful/La Vita e Bella
Jakob the Liar

Action:
Robocop (Yeah, I went there)
Chocolate
Repo Men

I'll doubtless have more later...

The pattern of this thread seems to be...

Culturally Relevant Important Films to Favorites to Movies You Kind of Like.

A graph showing a leaning between areas would be more precise but I'm not xkcd, so I can't do that.
