My favorite part about that English Peas recipe are a couple of the comments.

I would've given it 5 stars but the recipe was too complicated. Incredible show of technique though. Maybe you could do a video tutorial on this one because I was so lost.

"To make the white community happy"? Moroccan and Turkish people around here can be horribly racist to one another (I don't think a "white" person can get away with charging people extra in their restaurant because of the wrong nationality these days :p), but I sincerely doubt making the "white" people happy has anything to do with it.

It's the poorest people who tend to be most judgmental and discriminating, because they have the most reason to look for "others" to blame misfortune on; combined with the lowest amount of education and most easily swayed by "arguments" that aren't, really*. Also, historical reasons.

*Poorest *in a community*. All things in comparison. People in Congo are poorer than poor people in Belgium but are still happier and so on, but that's because they don't feel poor in the strictest sense of the word.

Pick a different example of a poor country. Maybe Nigeria. Congo is not a fun place to live.

I didn't pick a random example, I chose one I've been to and have seen people be way happier than us. Yes, in parts of the country there's regular rape raids and burning down of villages; people are dirt poor and often sleep outside because of "not having a roof". And obviously, I'm not saying everyone in the Kivu region is happy or happier than us - but go a bit further into the country to where most of the army/rebel/destruction things are "far away" (and that's 10 kilometers for some people) and, while still desperately poor, the people really are quite happy. By which I don't mean to imply "and we should let them rot there" or anything of the kind.

I can't help the fact there are. I'm not saying living there is fun or that the situation is ok. I'm saying people are, despite rape being practically common in some areas, often still happier than us consumerwhoring, overinformed, etc etc Westerners. Also, if you had bothered to read on, you might've seen where I said I was talking about the parts where rape isn't that common. Heaven forbid there are regional differences in the 11th largest country in the world!

On the other hand, I also read Jackson's (the plantiff) accusations, and if they're true, then there is a lot to answer for. The media also seems to be ignoring the complaint in favor of the deposition.

And how does one quantify happiness, anyway? Is there a measurable metric? Have studies been done? Am I unhappy due to being a western consumerwhore and I just don't know it?

For example, there's http://www.happyplanetindex.org/data/ (Congo scores slightly below Belgium and the US, Mexico turns out to be the highest in the world?!)

Tjat's sort of random - there are many different metrics out there to measure happiness, contentedness, perceived quality of life, life expectancy etc etc and try and measure them against one another.
And, I'm not saying the average Congolese person is essentially happier than the average Belgian. All I was saying was that happiness is linked much closer to perceived wealth in a culture than objective wealth compared worldwide. That is, a Congolese man who has 2 cows and a chicken may feel great about being fed, clothed, sheltered and have something to eat, while an American farmer who has two cows and a chicken would be less happy, I guess.
