I clicked on the link (Indiana? I was so sure it was Texas!), and read the writer's comment about his neighbor's driving. My first thought was the comment section about any article on self-driving cars and I bet the neighbor is one of those people that insist they are a better drive than any computer, instead of realizing they are the reason we need self-driving (or at least self-regulating, in regards to breaks, lane changes, etc.) cars.
To me, the scariest people are the ones who think they can never make a mistake or their actions, intended or accidental, could endanger others.

I think part of the problem, or misconception, is thinking of anime as a genre, when, like general animation, it's a method of storytelling. There's a ton of different types of genres (mech, shojo, etc.) that use anime to tell their stories. Telling someone you're an anime fan makes about as much sense as telling someone "I like movies!" when they ask what KIND of movies you like. It made me roll my eyes when they added a "Best Animated Film" category to the Oscars, because the stuff in that category is usually apples and oranges.
That said, cultural differences or not, some of the stuff that makes it into animes is it's own level of "WTF?!?".
