[Gaming] Elder Scrolls 5 - Dawnguard is HERE!

Like the companion issue, I'm 100% no Horse.

I've had 3 Dragons now, fly over head, never land or attack. What's going on? I can't hit them with fireballs, they just dodge. I can't get them to engage me in a fight.

From what I understand Ash, it'd negate the 100 pounds of Heavy Armor PLUS an extra 100 pounds for carrying.
Yes, it negates the speed reduction for wearing heavy armor by making it weightless while equipped and increases your carrying capacity by 100.

I've read there's a shout that forces them to land, but I've not seen it yet. I mostly have to hope I catch it attacking something or the guards manage to get it to land because I sure as shit couldn't land a hit with spells and they don't seem to care about arrows.

If you go far enough into the main story, you get something to help with that. It's still tricky to use though... I know that sometimes the dragons fly into awkward places, like Winterhold before you can access the College. Not much you can do except try and get lucky with a shot to grab their attention.

... about the dragon you can't get to attack you.

The dragon that you can't hit and that ignores you is likely the "big bad" of the game. I try to follow him because he'll give you new minor dragons to fight.

Lots of them won't attack unless you actually hit them first.

The part that drives me nuts is when I almost kill one and it decides it's going to pick a fight with something else on the other side of the mountain.

I'm playing a guy now who is totally paladin. No sneaking - ever. He doesn't even own a bow because that would be unchivalrous. Only magic is Resto. Right now he's level 8 and under the sign of the Warrior. Only one thing has caused me any trouble and that's a bloody Frost Troll. I killed the first dragon (with a super-sweet kill animation!) but I fear when they begin to get plentiful it's going to be hard.

I decided I can't do the FRAPS thing as it takes up too damn much space! (The disk use is too damned high!)

I haven't gone to visit the Greybeards yet, as I'm more interested in the College of Magic storyline. Should I go back till I get the "dragon pull whatever" thing?

So I've reversed my position on magic, again. Now that I have gotten enchanting up to 100 and have dual enchanted a full set of glass armor for my mage I am quite pleased with how insanely powerful magic is. The "summon dremora lord" makes a huge difference, no doubt, but with my magic at the level it is I can simply blast people with thunderbolts repeatedly and it recharges so fast it's not really a problem. I may try and re-do the armor on robes and see how much more powerful it is. It seems like the clothing can take more powerful enchantments, but I'm not sure.

Also sitting at 4/8 for the dragon masks. I am *really* curious what I get for finishing that one. Don't take that as a reason to spoil it for me.

Getting close to finished with my current character, though I have yet to do either the Imperial or Stormcloak quests, mostly because I have no idea who I should support.

I dislike the Imperials because for one, they attempted to execute me in the beginning, and two, they seems a bit underhanded in how they deal with things. The head guy himself even seems like a total selfish prick. On the other hand, something about Ulfric just rubs me the wrong way, at first I liked him but then I saw how he was treating the dark elves and argonions and I just don't know if I can support someone so xenophobic. The hint of him attacking Whiterun and exiling or killing Balgruuf makes it all the worst, since that guy is my favorite Jarl and just seemed like an honorable man.

Already I am planning my new character, and designed a method from which I am going to play him to maximize challenge.

He is going to be a petty thief who escaped into Skyrim, and after the events in Helgen decides he wants nothing to do with the whole dragon non-sense. I will head to Riverwood, followed by the long run to Riften, where I will join the Thieve's Guild. I will concentrate on material wealth at first, and handle all my missions with stealth, leveling through speech, lockpicking, pickpocket, one-handed, sneak and alchemy. Anytime a dragon appears I am going to run like crazy. After maxing out the Thieve's Guild and all the Riften quests my character will grow bored and head to the College to better learn Illusion magic, to improve his stealthy, thievery ways. Might even have him fall farther and join the Dark Brotherhood for a time, before having a change of heart and finally taking up a cause, leading to him joining with the Empire and later take on the dragons as he was destined. Not sure where I will go from there, but I am going to focus on my guy having a consistent adventure and storyline to him, so I won't run all over the place and instead will do quests as I gather them, and try to avoid combat when possible just to see if I could.

I like having Lydia for a pack mule. My heavy armor perks aren't up to where they don't weigh anything yet, so even "empty" I'm like 200 pounds (I just can't bring myself to leave behind things like potions and ingredients). Plus, it often comes in handy to have a nigh-invulnerable partner with you.
So this weekend, after having been paid 500 gold just to tell a bard to leave a woman alone, I got a bounty to kill a giant. This took some serious strategizing. After a couple attempts of leading the giant in a big game of ring-around-the-6-foot-rock-escarpment, I found there really wasn't a convenient way to whittle him down without either aggroing every giant and mammoth in a 10 mile radius, or flat out getting lydia killed (though, humorously, she survived multiple instances of being bashed 9 miles into the air). Finally, I end up just dragging the giant all the way down to the western watchtower, where it, of course, killed the one remaining whiterun guard there. But giants aren't smart. I stayed inside the tower (and had earlier given Lydia orders to stay outside the tower), and the giant couldn't reach me through the doorway. Between some arrows and some artful hit-and-dodge, I finally managed to kill it. All this trouble and heartache... and the bounty turned out to be 100g. Something's just not right here.

The rewards for certain missions make no sense. Like, the poor farmer guy pays me 500g for running food to the greybeards, whereas the dude from the mages college pays me nothing to get him 10 dwemer cogs.

If your going robes, your best bet is to buy one, not enchant one. You'll want an Expert's Robe of the school of your choosing or the Arch-Mage's robe.

Tell me about it. I did a bounty quest for the Jarl of Windhelm that involving killing a dragon, and he gave me 100g. I later did another quest that involved gathering a rather easy item for some regular shmoe wandering around the city and got 1250g from him.

Too bad she's so fucking dumb it's hard to keep her alive. See those swing blades up there? Why don't you just walk right into them, stop and let them slowly kill you while you fire arrows at that skeleton I could kill with 1 hit if you'd just get the fuck out of the way? Argh!

I got that giant bounty last night. Started to track him down and before I got close...battle music!! I heard a dragon roar and hid behind some rocks. Suddenly I got the message "Quest Completed!" and the dragon flew off. I got 1250 g for that.

Sometimes life just swings your way eh Dave?

I'm working my way through the Mage of College quests and hoping to really put some serious time and effort into Illusion. Anyone know if CHARM in this game is as good as it was in Oblivion?

In my mind I envision a game where my CHARM is so good, instead of killing that annoying dragon, I keep it charmed 100% of the time and just use it to terrorize the countryside.

Whenever we come upon traps, I give her orders to wait back away from them until I creep through and have them disarmed. I seldom have a hard time keeping Lydia alive where dragons or giants aren't concerned - most of the time, when she gets knocked down, enemies lose interest in her.

Also, I gave her a REALLY good bow, and she tends to favor it over her melee weapons.

The only issue I have with her, really, is I like to take unorthodox routes. I'm a sucker for finding ways to scrabble my way down deadly cliffs alive. I think nothing of bounding over rocks and dropping off 8 foot drops. Lydia don't play that. She goes AROUND. Every time. When "around" the cliff I'm sliding down is 3 miles away... it gets inconvenient.

I just wish she had a little more personality, actually. Guess Neverwinter Nights henchmen spoiled me in that regard. She's no Tomi Undergallows.

So, I seem to be having different results with the followers than other people. Lydia CAN'T DIE in my game. She will go down on one knee, but she won't die. She can sit in a trap for 30 minutes getting cut up, but she won't die. The ONLY thing that will kill her is me accidentally hitting her with a spell or something. Or, maybe falling off the side of a cliff.

AE will kill her when she's "downed." So, for instance, fire breath, or enemy magic. I even once got her caught in the crossfire of a giant's club swipe (not the overhead slam) which killed her because it missed me. But yes, so long as you're fighting single-target attackers, or are careful to drag the fight away from her a little when she gets "downed," she will always pant for a few seconds on her knees, then straighten up and wade back in for more punishment.

Those swinging spike walls. JUST STEP ONE STEP TO THE LEFT. NOOOO!! UGHGGH!! STOP HITTING THE BUTTON!

Followers can get on my nerves for some of the reasons above. The travel thing is probably the most annoying to me, since I have to find a landmark and then fast travel to the location I am standing just to get them to catch up anytime that century. They also can do silly things like walk in front of me when I am about to attack, or even start a fight with something while I am trying to stay sneaking.

Really, I know most of my issues will likely be fixed once the construction set is released. Here are what I hope to see.

1) A mod that makes Followers invincible. There are NPCs that you can already knock down but will never die, no matter what you do to them. Followers should have used this code, since having a stray arrow murder my follower while they are in the kneeling position is just downright annoying.

2) A mod that increases mobility. How they do this I don't know, but I wouldn't mind a mod that calculates the distance you have between you and the follower and then just automatically ports them behind you once you get far away from them. Maybe a mod that makes them ignore terrain obstacles. Just anything so they don't have to run for five hours to reach me because I took a mountain path with a lot of rocks.

3) A mod that makes them immune to traps, at least the ones involving pressure plates. I am running ahead of them so if I notice a pressure plate I should, technically, be telling them to avoid it, so it wouldn't be immersion breaking. The rope traps are just trip and done, plus I can "cut" them, so I don't mind if they accidentally trigger those.

4) A method to set my followers gear manually, followers have a really bad habit of equiping items that have the most armor value, rather then what gives them the most general benefit. For instance I found a crown with +20 archery that I gave to Aela, since she almost always uses her bow, and the minute I equip even a Hide Helm, it's replaced on her head. She sometimes also uses the wrong arrows.

I am actually going to save my next playthrough for when some of these things happen. Would also like a mutli-follower patch, one that lets me have two or three followers at a time (anything more then that would just be overkill)

I'm kind of annoyed by how you can't kill some people just because they have a quest. And also how there's a lack of choices in some quests. I had a quest to plant some false evidence on a shopkeeper--I wanted to betray the guy, so I instead wanted to plant it on him. Quest Failed. I feel like if that was Fallout 3 or NV, I would've been able to do what I wanted. There have been a couple quests like that. Otherwise, quests that just involve me delivering or killing something. I'm enjoying almost everything about the game, but I feel like I got spoiled by Fallout's variety.

I believe Charm is tied to levels in this game and because your not allowed to make your own spells anymore, there's gonna be an upper limit of what you can Charm. So no, it's not as good as in Oblivion because you can't make a Charm spell that will work on anyone.

Wait.. you CAN'T make spells anymore? What kind of fu........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ is that?

Wait.. you CAN'T make spells anymore? That's a pretty universal reaction. The Master Spells don't do enough damage at the end-levels, level limits mean that there are huge swaths of foes you can't affect, and the time limits on the summons are too short to make effective use of them. Not being able to make better spells means you have trouble later on.

I'm almost certain they will fix this in DLC, if only because it will make them money.

Amusing thing to do.

Step 1 - Go to an Inn or Tavern where there are a lot of NPCs having dinner like Riften or Solitude.
Step 2 - Save
Step 3 - Buy a bunch of Apple Pies, in fact, save them so you get a dozen or so.
Step 4 - Drop them near NPCs
Step 5 - Move back and enjoy the show.

MY PIE! I WAS HERE FIRST!
OVER MY DEAD BODY!
THAT CAN BE ARRANGED!

Re: making your own spells---well, to be honest, I remember making my own spells in Morrowind completely trivialized everything. My spells became so ridiculous there wasn't even close to a challenge anymore.

True, but the current system slants the difficulty too much in the other direction. They need to ether include another rank of spells or let us make our own.
