7th Guest at GOG.com for 8 bucks for the next 2 days. If you never played it, it was a Myst clone with a horror bent. Maybe a little tame and low tech by today's standards, but I still love it for the redbook soundtrack alone. Yes, I still have my original 7th Guest CDs.

Old Man Stauf built a house, and filled it with his toys. Six guests did he invite one night, their screams the only noise. Blood inside the kitchen, blood right up the hall, blood dripping down the attic stairs; Hey guests! Try not to fall. No one came out that night, not one was ever seen... but Old Man Stauf is waiting there, crazy... sick... and mean.

My God, the memories! I remember the 'skullface' at 6:25 very well.
Yeah, I remember noticing that for the first time too, and then going back and playing the whole intro over again just to show my friends. Back then, the concept of full motion video on a computer at all was still mindblowing... and even that basic level of proto-photoshop was also straight out magic.

Heh, and back when I played the game, I thought the sounds from the intro being unsynched from the video (listen closely to the carving of the doll) were my computer just not being fast enough, but they persist even today.

There's just one problem with the 7th Guest... if you play it on your PC today, it's impossible to win one of the puzzles without some... alterations. The puzzle with the dividing slime had a time limit for it's moves, where it would calculate the best move using your processor each time you moved. On PCs of the day, this meant it would occasionally make errors because it wouldn't have enough time to calculate the best move. But on modern PCs, it can calculate the move in a fraction of the time, so it will always make the correct move... making it impossible to win.

You can artificially throttle your processor to beat that puzzle, but it's still a pain in the ass.

Indie Royale Valentine's Bundle
- Zeno Clash
- Hoard (w/ 2 DLC packs)

- Soulcaster 1 & 2 (exclusive)

I was totally wrong about potential games (which is not surprising). However, I am still excited about Lume. I already own Zeno Clash, and I really loved that game. I recommend this bundle.

Man, 7th Guest was one of those games I loved playing but never got very far. I can't remember which puzzle(s) I got stuck on, but there were a couple.

Me and a friend of mine still quote one particular thing from the game: "You want a balloon? A reeeeed balloooon?"

It's one of those games that is way more fun to play co-op. It's decent by yourself, but if you don't have someone to play with once and a while, it's probably a pass.

Hmm... how is Magicka? I keep seeing it on sale, and I keep getting tempted. Is it good?
The single player has always been unbalanced, and tweaks to balance the versus-multiplayer have made the single-player much more difficult overall (and it was rough to begin with). The developers have chosen to really focus on the versus mode and challenge maps, and have paid little attention to campaign mode as far as I can tell.

The writing is funny, but you'll have a hard time experiencing the cut-scenes in multiplayer (unless you host the game, maybe.)

The game is built around a great idea, but the actual execution is very hit-and-miss. I really enjoyed it for a while, but soured on it as the single-player and co-op campaign became harder and harder to enjoy.

Unless you're going to have friends to play it with, or want to get into the versus mode, I don't recommend the game.

To celebrate it's PC release, Alan Wake is on sale on Steam for $29.99 instead of $34.99. Also, if you buy it before the 23rd, your version will be the Collector's edition instead of the normal one.

I enjoyed it, but you will never understand why half of the games events happen without a keen understanding of the writer's process and literary tropes. It's a fun game, full of metaphor and alliteration, but it really does feel like it was made by and for writers. It's also a bit too hard in some points.
