So it turns out, clinical testing is showing that crack and meth aren't as addictive as stereotypes would have you believe - the users are still able to make rational decisions that might surprise you - such as turning down another hit on the pipe in favor of getting 5 dollars to be given a month later. Also the famous "rat who can't stop jamming the cocaine button" experiment was flawed. In both humans and rats, it looks like it isn't that drugs ruin your life and make you miserable, it's that miserable, ruined people (and rats) are more likely to turn to drugs.

Oh so a study that is funded by big oil finds shit loads of damage being done but less than what some had thought so now fracking is like the most awesome thing ever? Really convincing argument there guys.
Everything is dirty. It's just a question of how dirty something is.

Hell hath no spitting, hissing, frothing, vindictive fury than a Democrat encountering political opposition.

Ted Cruz's speechwriter tweeted:

the communications chair for the Democratic Party of Sacramento replied:

Democrats. The party of tolerance and empathy.

So pages of bipartisan shock and disgust, he doubles down...

triples down...

QUADRUPLES down...

But eventually experiences remorse.

Yep. The difference between a democrat politician and a republican one? The democrat one is actually capable of remorse for the pain they cause.

Is that a joke? Because it seems to be much more along the lines of apologizing because he received a bad backlash.

Jay Carney has refused to answer almost 9,500 questions. Will he make the big 10k before the year is out? Who's a bigger liar, Obama or Carney?[DOUBLEPOST=1379724579,1379724497][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, it absolutely smells like some PR operative finally found him, grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, and shook him with every syllable of "DON'T. YOU. SEE. HOW. BAD. THIS. LOOKS?!"

How did GOP change Obama's mind on Syria? Gun control is iffy, since a good chunk of Dem's don't want too much of it either. And we'll see how holding the line on amnesty does for them in the next election.

And yeah, the response was straight up stupid.

I'm thinking this probably happened at both ends.
Don't let interpersonal relationships spoil your politicking, kids.

Breakingnews.com's play by play coverage of the Ted Cruz filibuster is cracking me up.

"Ted Cruz compares Senate to WWE: 'Everybody already knows who's going to win or lose and it's really just all for show.'"
"Ted Cruz now reading tweets on Senate floor, says he believes he might be the first person to do so."
"Ted Cruz now reading children's bedtime bible stories to his daughters on Senate Floor."

I'm all in favour of reasonable discussion and not having people being able to push through whatever law without debate. This, though, is obstructionism and nothing more, and devalues the very ideas a parliament is supposed to stand for.

Actually, no. The filibuster is intentionally made this way, so that you can talk about anything and everything so that not only is it to make sure that there is enough debate, but it is also the final prevention of democracy simply becoming two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner. Remember, if there was really enough political will to override him, 60 votes does stop a filibuster.

And he just passed 19 hours, in 4rd place for longest filibuster. Wonder what the over/under is on him whipping out the phone book and starting to read it. Number 1 is 24 hours, 18 minutes by Strom Thurmond.

I know it's meant this way. I, personally, hold the opinion that this is jack shit and doesn't deserve the public podium being given to it. There are 100,000 different ways of slowing down the process from idea to enacted law, there are a million ways to try and convince others of your point, there's hours and hours of debate or discussion to be had. There is absolutely 0 value in someone reading fairy tales in parliament or congress...unless they're about WMDs or some such, I guess.
Anyway, we have our own "democratic" ways of slowing things down - callign in a conflict of interest, demanding a vote of confidence, pulling things from parliament to senate and back again - and I don't like or approve of all of them...But at least, they all still have meaning and are relevant to the point you're discussing.

The same goes for all the different kind of crap-ass riders people attach to bills. A law about education with an attachment about nuclear weapons, a law about cutting the budget with an appendix to increase potato subsidies by 100,000% - I know I'm exagerating and everything, but the American political system has some really weird-ass options and possibilities.

Filibusters raise outside discussion about the bill being filibustered, raising awareness among the voting public. It might seem minor, but you bring up Ted Cruz and his current filibuster, then the discussion will turn to why. What's more there is now opportunity to get in contact with your representative or senator and inform them of your stance on the issue. Without this filibuster the bill would have been quickly passed, without the voting public having the time to make known their stance. The filibuster is not meant to increase debate among the Congress, it's meant to allow for debate among the public. Now you can get cynical about legislators actually voting with their constituents, media attention and reporting of what goes on in Congress, or a host of other issues, but that's the case with all government and if you're going to do that you should just come and join the Libertarian party.

Interesting that such a thing isn't in this thread. Nor a link to it.
I haven't brought it up because I think we've really talked it all out as much as we're going to. Everybody who reads this thread who's so inclined probably has talked themselves blue in the face about the virtues/evils of the Affordable Care Act.

I'll say this: I vehemently disagree with many of Ted Cruz's political views, but I have a lot of respect for anyone who actually performs a real filibuster. None of that "I just mentioned I wanted to filibuster it, so the bill is now on hold without me having to do anything else" bullshit.

Yeah, it wasn't ever really a filibuster. He wasn't stopping a vote, just making a show. The vote wasn't even scheduled to take place until 1:00 today.
