Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

The first truth is that “Truth” is not a democracy, it is a monarchy. True things are “true” because they are inherently true, not because they surpass some kind of crowdsourcing threshold.

Surprise! When leaders say people are less than human, they get treated as such by their underlings.
Just to clarify (because it took me a second read-through), it’s the people who get treated as such by the leaders’ underlings, not the leaders themselves.

it is probably gonna be outlawed here soon (or at least allowed to be banned at the state level).
Well, maybe not “banned” so much as “nigh-impossible to cut through all the red tape.” That way they can say, “Technically, it’s not actually ‘banned.’”

In a bit of news that happened across the pond over the weekend, Ireland voted to end their constitutional law banning abortion, which is expected to quickly move to the government legalizing it. Good to see other countries move in the right direction, even though it is probably gonna be outlawed here soon (or at least allowed to be banned at the state level).
It's kinda weird that you're suggesting Ireland comes off as progressive here, especially when all they've done is reverse a barrier they put in place when our countries were being the leaders on the issue.

Ireland's way behind the rest of the West.

They're moving in the right direction as we move in the wrong one. Obviously absurd that it took them so long, but better late than never.

And @PatrThom Iowa has passed a law thar makes it incredibly difficult to get an abortion for the point of challenging Roe V Wade (and the other major pro-choice ruling that I don't recall the name of). Given the current Supreme Court, it seems like there's a good chance it'll work, opening up states to ban it outright.

I was going to say "Dictatorship," but I doubt you can say the truth ever forced its authority on anyone. People ignore it all the time!

Oh, truth always forces itself on people, it just lets them pretend otherwise for as long as they can, before it sends them off the the gulags.

But i disagree with "Dictatorship", since it's authority is certainly more "divinely appointed since the beginnings of time".

I think our Matrix is unraveling. Our Dark City is in need of another shuffling.
Just don't give Mr. Hand a syringe.

(Awesome underappreciated movie btw. If you've never seen it, mute until the guy wakes up. The voiceover was a studio decision that ruins the mystery, but don't worry, it pays off before the movie ends, and you know everything the voiceover added)

The Director's Cut version does away with that awful voiceover entirely. It also inserts some other scenes which don't ... quite fit in aesthetically (because they were reshot), but it's completely worth it to get rid of that voiceover.

The death toll in Puerto Rico due the hurricane and lack of any sort of support afterwards is now 4700 people.

Fucking SHAMEFUL.

You know, in the end it does seem like there's no point in fighting the crazy extrimists... if you just let them carry on, eventually they end up showing everyone just how far they're willing to go.

Ya, but despite communism being responsible for more people dead than The Black Death, people still think it's a good idea. And a number of other "really bad ideas" that keep popping up from time to time. The scary part is how many of them aren't considered "extreme" IMO.

So keep fighting those extremists. We probably disagree on which ARE extremists (though we probably have a lot more overlap than not), but I disagree with ignoring them, generally.

You can be an extremist of anything... even your most precious, perfect goody-two-shoes idea can be taken too far...

So while the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the homophobic bakers, their ruling was specifically done in a way that makes it clear it can't be used as precedent for future discrimination cases, at least according to the ACLU. So that's something at least.

That case always kind of bothered me, because (I think) the bakery did offer a pre made cake, but said they didn't want to make a custom one. So if that is the case, I can see why the ruling may have gone that way.

Yeah, I have a hard time disagreeing with this decision. The ruling by the lower court, in this case, to me, felt like an overreaction.
