Got Married

#1

Jay

Jay

So after close to 3 years engagement … after living together for the past 8 years, buying a house together 2 years ago and being successful in each other's respective careers over the years… we have decided a time, a date and a place for our wedding.

Las Vegas.

Bellagio Hotel

Terazza di Sogno.

May, 2012.

It’ll be a small wedding with only immediate family and friends (a group of about 20). We were never into the big wedding idea and after going to close to 30 or so in my life… we wanted none of that hassle of wedding planning and treating it as a 2nd job for a year. We didn’t have the heart or the interest for something like that.

We broke the news to everyone last week and friends and family have been extremely supportive and happy that it’s finally going to happen. We’re very enthusiastic as well and have been corresponding with our wedding coordinator by e-mail and things are moving along nicely.

So… who’s been in Vegas? What should we do? What do you suggest that we do? We plan to be there for about a week… maybe catch a few shows, maybe go to the Grand Canyon and visit some sites.

Please note that this won’t be our honeymoon (we plan to go a European trip to Barcelona, Paris, Tuscany and Positano for 2 weeks some months after our wedding) I haven’t been in the States very much since I was a teen and beyond getting fondled by TSA agents during my stopovers in Fort Lauderdale, I haven’t seen much of the States.

Your feedback and sound advice would be kindly appreciated.

Congratulations!!! :D
And omgwtf your relationship sounds strangely familiar to mine! Together 8 years, living together most that time. Bought a condo a year and half ago and have been engaged for about 4 years now. Also, we're planning a May wedding! Weird. Oh, and Mike realllly wants to go to Europe for honeymoon. Barcelona is on the list since that's where his family is from.

I love Vegas! Definitely check out a couple shows and be sure to buy some giant drinks! :) Even if you don't gamble or check out any shows, there's still so much to see that you won't get bored. I've always wanted to see a Cirque du Soleil show but have never had money for it. Only have ever seen a couple magic shows which are fun, but Cirque and a comedy show are on my list!
The Bellagio is GORGEOUS, definitely one of my favorite hotels to check out. Luxor is also pretty amaze-balls!
Mandalay Bay has the Shark Reef. MGM has a little water park, but that's more fun for kids.
M&M store is huge and fun to see. If you like rides, New York has that awesome roller coaster outside. And then there's the scary rides on top of the Stratophere that I'm too scared to ride.

I believe I can get a few free tickets to a Cirque de Soleil show. My company has a big account with the local Cirque de Soleil (montreal duh!) Maybe I can get some? Mmmmmm....

Tell you what, if we ever cross paths in Barcelona next year, we should drink some fine spanish wine! :awesome:

Thanks for the heads up to a few hotspots.. very interesting. :)

Well, you can either spend the night waiting in line, or you can spread around several hundred (per person) to hop the line. Neither is what I would consider a night well spent. Then again, I'm not really a nightclub guy.

Although to be fair, Marquee was pretty banging. If you're going to hit the clubs, I'd have no problems recommending that one.

Haha yeah, Mike's first time in Vegas over 21... he blew $200 playing Blackjack just once. He thought it would be easy and I was not there to "supervise". He just came back saying, "Okay I'm stupid. I'm broke."

The last time we went to Vegas was amazing, though! Mike did pretty okay with a quarter machine and cashed out before things started going wrong. Played some weird game where there's $1, $2, 5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 on the table with a big wheel to spin. Put money on a bill, spin the wheel, maybe win some money! He got $100 from that one, and we left to find something else.
Our friend said to play 3 card poker. "It's my favorite. Just give them money, she'll put down some cards, and you don't have to do anything." They played twice. The first time, nothing. Second time, he had a straight flush and won $250!
Some how we ended up finding a place with nickle machines and I got $150 from one. We ended up buying our friends breakfast (we were up until 5am-ish?). :)

Just don't get sucked into slot machines. You'll start doing well then that can take a very wrong turn. Be smart and cash out before you lose it all! :D

#15

Dave

Dave

The only time I went to Vegas I lost my ass really, really fast. Like I started with $250 and was down to $10 in an hour. (I had the hotel already paid for and didn't take my credit cards with me.) And since we were going to be there for the rest of the weekend I had no idea what I was going to do. So I broke the $10 into pennies and hit the penny slots. Pennies turned into dimes, dimes into quarters and quarters into dollars. By the time we left I was up $750 from my original starting point. In the meantime my friend had plopped himself down at a blackjack table, played for almost 24 hours straight and left up $20 or so.

All in all it was fun but had I not hit a few lucky slots I'd have been bored stupid sitting in the hotel watching TV.

That's roulette.

Baccarat can be pretty fun if you have a good group around the table.

Best money I ever made in a casino was at the 25 cent poker slots. Made 50 bucks in an hour.

Worst money I lost was at blackjack on a cruise ship. Lost 200 bucks in an hour.

Generally I try not to gamble with real money.

Black Jack is really only the most consistent way of making money. The best way is still Poker, because your not eating a house advantage. But then you need to worry about guys with bats...

But seriously, don't gamble too much. Go to a couple of shows (I think The Amazing Johnathon is still in town, as well as Penn and Teller), hit some of the world class dining establishments that have opened up, and maybe hit up one of the gun renting ranges in town. There's tons of stuff to do.

If you ever run out of money in Vegas, just hand out hooker's business cards... made enough money to play video poker and get free drinks for a couple of hours. At least that is what I heard.

The shopping mall under Caesar's Palace is pretty epic. I also had a good time at the Midway (carnival games) at Circus Circus. Hoover Dam is worth the day trip.

Congrats Jay.

Go downtown at night at least once. It's like a full time party going on there - I had some of my most fun there. If nothing else you can stare at the pretty lights above your head.

I'm not a gambler either, but did have a lot of fun playing craps. There are a lot of rules, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a pretty fun, communal game experience. And, you can find the 3 dollar tables where you don't end up spending much.

Indeed, about time. However, it was never a question of commitment, as I knew I wanted to marry her over 4 years ago. We just are a new-age couple that wanted to take our time to get married and settled down. We wanted to do it at our pace, not the Church's. :)

Thank you kindly for your words.

No seriously, tell me about your experiences there. Tips. Costs for shows? Tips on having a better time. Penthouse? How much? Shows? Which shows? How much? Crack? Penn and Teller? The TV show?

Penn and Teller have a live show that runs nightly where they do some of their most famous acts coupled with Penn's usual rants about rights and freedoms. It's very enjoyable if you're a fan (with some opportunities for audience participation. If you have an Iphone, you may get to go on stage!)

Buy alcohol for your room before you get to the hotel. Ask your cabbie to take you to the beer store before you get on the strip because it's damn near impossible to find booze outside of the casinos/restaurants for cheap. There's one about halfway between the airport and the strip that has munchies available as well.

The Penthouse suites were $400ish a night IIRC. We got a deal and it was nice getting access to the VIP check-in for the free wifi and snacks/drinks. The room itself was kind of dated; try booking rooms in the new Bellagio tower as it's closer to the wedding facilities as well. (And is just more modern, period)

Go to the Gun Store. Do it! As a Canadian, it's fantastic; just make sure you go really, really early in the morning to avoid the lineups.

First off, Félicitations, mon ami!

When my wife and I were there, we took some advice from one of my sergeants: Sign up to hear one of the time-share salesperson's spiels. You go, look at some property that you're never going to invest in for a couple hours, and they load you down with tickets to shows, Grand Canyon etc... Depending on what you're feeling up for, it might not be a bad idea to look into it.

Also, I know you said gambling isn't your thing, but it's still fun to give it a whirl once... just, as has already been stated, you don't play unless you're willing to write off the money from the get-go. Also, leave your credit card behind!

Cirque du Soleil was FANTASTIC when I was there (Kà, WELL worth seeing, if it's still playing), we caught a couple smaller shows.

The only bad thing I can think of is that Circus Circus was supposed to be closing shortly after we left, so you're missing out on one of my favorite casinos there (the free circus show was awesome to see.) :(

My favourite part of Vegas was actually visiting some of the National park areas in the desert around it. Red Rock Canyon is gorgeous.

I have to agree with this. you be surprise what free stuff (no strings attach if you play your cards right)

my co-worker usually get free vacay and listen to stuff for about an hour or so. In Vegas (a friend told me this) you can get tickets to stuff free after you attend. Even if you don't buy anything, you still get the tickets/stuff ;)

Also if you love to drink, gamble at a low stakes table. You gamble, lose very little money (though also win very little money) and get free drinks the whole time. At least that's how it works at the places I have gone.

It's funny even talking about this, since I myself leave for Las Vegas on a trip this Saturday.

Sadly, I just found out the week we're going to be there. They won't be there. :fu:

Also, this will be the song the fountain will play after the ceremony.

Out of everything I did in Vegas *cough* remember the pictures *cough* The fountain at the Bellagio was my favorite.

#99

I wasn't impressed by the fountains much when I went, but I saw them in the daytime. They look a lot better at night. So is it like, if you get married there you get to pick one fountain choreography?

Best wishes to you and your fiancee! I didn't go to Vegas to gamble since I was working in the industry at the time. I went to see what else was there. If you have time, go out to Red Rock Canyon or up to Mount Charleston Lodge just to get away from the hustle and glitz.

Company surprised me by taking me out for dinner at a local BBQ resto. Got there, happened that the entire company was there, 40+ employees with a section of the resto closed for us for lunch. Had a great time, ate well and in the end, they provided a photoshopped Hallmark card with our faces on it and a $500 check to do whatever the hell I want to do with it.

Things are going good!

I don't know about your definition of a wedding, but.... Well, as long as she's okay with it, all's the better ;-)

Also, since I wasn't around before: congratulations man! Hope you are having/have/had an absolutely amazing time. Don't lose sight though, that the greatest treasure around there isn't to be found in the casinos, at the shows, or out on a hike. It's right there in the room with you ;-) (what, too sappy?
