[Movies] Guardians of the Galaxy

It's not perfect but it's pretty damn close and I loved nearly every minute of it. Fucking great. Favourite marvel movie to date, by far and deserves the high praise it's getting.

The gf doesn't want to brave the opening weekend crowds, so I have one ticket for tomorrow afternoon. If it's as good as I think it will be, then we can definitely see it together next week on my birthday. Somehow I don't think I'd mind watching it twice.

Super big spoiler so don't look if you don't want shit spoilered.

Man, we live in a world where a near perfect comic representation of fucking Thanos made it into movies, Galactus was deemed "too silly" and Wonder Woman has yet to appear in a film.

He is so imposing in the short time that you do see him and Josh Brolin is a perfect fit.

There is an end credit scene, as always, but it's a little different then they have been in the past:
Howard the Duck?!?!

Same thing with me and my best friend. I'm going tonight, but he will want to wait.

It's definitely worth seeing multiple times. Already going again tomorrow. I'd love to experience it with a large audience and laugh along with them, it is absolutely one of those movies, as my group was rather small.

There was an interview where Chris Pratt said the hardest part for him was not making the "pew-pew" laser sounds when shooting. He was like, "Okay, every time I've had a plastic laser gun in my hands since I was five years old, I've gone *pew-pew-pew* with it. Now, suddenly I'm in this movie, and they give me the most awesome plastic laser gun ever, and they keep getting mad and having to stop when I go *pew-pew*!"

Is there any movie violence outside the norm that would make it unwatchable for an 8 year old? I am not really concerned about language.

From what I remember there was never any torrents of blood but if they got in a scuffle there would be visible injuries. There is a scene that I thought might be frightening for younger kids toward the end. I won't tell how it's happening but take a look if your curious as to what is happening to them.

There are close up shots of the team yelling in pain as they are being mystically torn apart layer by layer until they are nearly made of energy. The visual might be a lot for a younger kid to take in. Again, no blood and gore but you can definitely tell it's hurting them painfully.

I told my friends that I'll be at the first showing Saturday morning. If they show up great if not no big deal. I'm seeing either way. Would go Friday morning if it weren't for that pesky job.

I'm very excited to see this movie. So excited that I have to break the rule about not bringing our 1.5 year old along with us to see it (We can't afford a movie and a babysitter, so it's kind of a sucky situation)
We'll go to a matinee on a weekday in the hopes of avoiding pissing off as many people as possible. Though she did really well when we went to see How To Train Your Dragon 2.

Stupid lousy job keeping me occupied in the afternoons and evenings.

Stupid lousy theater not opening until noon, not giving me enough time to see the movie and then go to work.

I loved the holy hell out of this movie. I'm all nerded up and want to watch it again right now. That IMAX poster is a really nice glossy print too, I thought it would just be a standard poster.

Spoiler Question:

Did I miss something toward the end...? Rocket goes from immediately crying that Groot died to "it's cool, I'm growing him in a pot" just seems like there was a scene or something missing there.

OK, time for me to expand on that now that I'm at an actual keyboard and not my phone.

WAAAAY back towards the beginning of this thread, I said something to the effect that if they didn't lean into the goofiness of the entire premise, the movie would fail. They didn't lean into it, they dove in with both feet and managed to make the most fun science fiction movie I can remember since Star Wars. There were absolutely NO slowdowns in the movie. It was entertaining from the first moment to the last.

Spoilery stuff ahead:

Great nods to the source material. Cosmo makes an appearance, which I loved. I like the way that they kind of borrowed from the annihilation storyline.

Also, this is it ladies and gentlemen, no more pussyfooting around it, the infinity gems are officially there and Thanos is waiting in the wings to kick off the Infinity Gauntlet.

That scene after credits with Howard the Duck was great. You could tell who in the theater knew comics and who didn't by their reactions to that scene.

Now, who the hell is Peter's father in the MCU? Is it going to be maybe Adam Warlock, or possibly Quasar, maybe Captain Marvel?

What are you doing?!

I realized this morning that the post credit scene was only possible because of Disney purchasing Lucasfilm last year. That somehow makes it funnier.

Spoiler Question:

That's easy,
I am Groot.
wait, shit.

Holy shit this movie, man. I can't wait to see it again, it was a fucking spectacle in IMAX 3D.

Couple things.

I don't think Rocket knew the scope of Groot's regenerative ability until the sprout started reforming at the end.

Did anyone find Nathan Fillion? I was keeping an eye out and I don't know where he was, apparently he was supposed to show up as one of the aliens for his cameo?

I think my only disappointment was Thanos being CGI. The rest of the makeup work was so damned good, I wanted to see him as the same. Still though, Brolin's the right man for the job. That fucking smile as Ronan left his throne room, man.

To answer your question:
Nathan Fillion is under a ton of makeup and costume, but he's the prisoner who Groot grabs and lifts by the nose. Took me a moment, but I recognized a bit of his voice.

Anyway, add me to the group that loves this movie. Great, action, great heart, and friggin' great soundtrack.

Regarding more spoiler talk:
Looks like Josh Brolin is going to do well as Thanos. Not only does he capture the attitude in what little time we see him, but the voice sounds just like how I imagined Thanos as sounding.

Also, Howard the Duck. Howard the Duck is now a canon part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Awesome.
