I am planning I have it preordered, :D not sure what I plan to do with it yet in terms of switching it to my main online rpg or what I will probably still raid with friends in WoW but may focus in PvP with this.

So, almost no one is getting this awesome game?

#6

I probably will, but not right away. My MMO plate is full.

I have always had an odd relationship with Guild Wars. I beta tested the original and really loved it, then they altered the skill system drastically before release, and I found myself not enjoying it as much. I tried playing it for awhile but after a time I just got bored. I didn't buy the "expansions" until later, tried them, still didn't really catch me.

Guild Wars 2 does look to be drastically better then GW1, but I still have an odd taste in my mouth about it because nothing they say really excites me. No tanks or healers? Okay that is neat and all, but I sometimes like the variety afforded those roles. I don't like just playing DPS. Similar skill system as the first game? Meh. I think in the end I will wait to see what others here say about it, because so far my friends that have beta tested have not been very enthusiastic about it. Either way I will likely buy it someday just like GW1, that is the nice thing about it not having a fee.

#8

GasBandit

GasBandit

I will be getting it. Some of my old pals from Warhammer are trying to convince me to restart the guild I led in WAR for GW2, but I haven't decided if that's what I want to do yet. But I will be getting it. The PvP sounds too much like what I want.

#9

Jay

Jay

What kind of guild?

#10

GasBandit

GasBandit

What kind of guild?
It focused almost exclusively on rvr/PvP content. We maintained characters in every tier, did a ton of keep assaults and defenses, ran premade Scenario groups. Guild and alliance warbands. That sort of thing.

#11

Jay

Jay

No interest on PVE content at all?

I've been looking at the game more seriously the last few days. Shame there's no beta going.

#12

GasBandit

GasBandit

if the Pve content is better than it was in warhammer then maybe but I really liked being able to gain levels exclusively in pvp. and what do you mean no Beta? they've been in beta for weeks. There's a stress test this weekend.[DOUBLEPOST=1343929788][/DOUBLEPOST]http://www.bluesnews.com/s/134191/guild-wars-2-stress-test-today

Time to download another client then.

I would love to revisit realm PVP back as it used to be in DAOC.

My man's really interested in this game, and I believe he's already pre-ordered two copies. Work has been busy, though, and school's starting up again soon, so I'm not particularly optimistic I'm going to be playing much.

GasBandit

GasBandit

Really, until Bioware took it over, Warhammer's was a pretty good approximation. Heck, there were some nights where my guild could attack, take, and defend a keep all on their own as "something to do that night." It was a lot of fun. Then EA basically gutted mythic and gave WAR to bioware for some bizarre reason. My theory was they wanted them to have practice in administrating an MMO before TOR launched. But shit went downhill fast.

#16

Jay

Jay

So, when you plan to do your decision GasBandit?

#17

GasBandit

GasBandit

So, when you plan to do your decision GasBandit?
Probably within a week or two after launch. I'll definitely be playing, just not sure if I'll be leading a guild or just joining one. It took up a HUGE amount of time last time, even though I had specifically planned the guild structure so as NOT to eat up all my time. It pretty much ended up my very own cult of personality, and if I wasn't there to actively lead and give orders, they all got bored and surly and drifted apart instead of doing stuff together. It kinda burns you out faster, feeling the obligations of that kind of leadership.

Oh, there was very little drama. The problem was there was very little of ANYTHING if I wasn't there to lead it. I had hoped to build a guild and train officers that could take over for me after I left, making the guild self-perpetuating. I tried, but it didn't work out. When I left the game, despite giving a month's notice and setting up a successor and officers and getting other people to lead guild night events occasionally... the whole thing pretty much dissolved like kool-aid mix into water after I left. It was discouraging.

#20

Jay

Jay

Weak officers.

#21

Finally managed to play a bit last night.

It's a solid game.

Not much to be accomplished during stress tests though. Lag city.

Actually, it's been pretty nice. Playing lots of RTSes, FPSes, etc. It'll be nice to have an MMO without the pressure a subscription fee brings, though. Previously, we would play whatever MMO we were active on to the exclusion of ALL OTHER GAMES because it was costing us 30 bucks a month (for 2 accounts).

Have you ever been forced to group during PVE events?

I'm LVL 18 and all I have done is go to area quests beyond main quest.... i find it.... very boring.

I've done nothing but WvW and craft since level 7. Now I'm 13. Arrow carts ftw.

#44

Telephius

Telephius

I have never grouped really besides with friends, also are you doing just the Heart area quests? or the Dynamic Event area quests?(they are a dark oranged circles on the map) Also dont leave immediately once you do one stage of a D.E. wait for the NPCs to finish their dialogue and move to their next location because they may start up another in the chain.

EDIT: Also if the DEs and Hearts feel too grindy for you, forage(gets xp), pvp like Gas, explore, do the Vistas as they tend to require jumping puzzles to be solved(varying degrees of ease) crafting gets you xp. Don't buckle down on one thing, I am level 24/25 and havent even skipped to other zones to do their stuff besides to do one of my story quests.

I am gonna say GW2 PvE is definately better than DaoC PvE :p It has the charm of thrashing mob camps with your friends but the added flavour of actual themeatic objective ;)

EDIT: Also what class are you playing Jay? I am doing an engineer and I can't get bored of knocking my enemy and myself backwards with an overcharged musket or lighting my enemies aflame with a flamethrower. Could be thrashing mobs boredom is because the class you have doesn't do it for you on the small scale?

Just a question: how sensible/important/hard to earn/useful is gold in GW2? I don't think I've ever seen this many banners and ads all over the 'net become "Get gold cheap fast" etc for a game. Seriously, at the moment, I have 5 tabs open, and all five pages have nothingbut gold farm ads for GW2.

Due to a peculiar design decision, all interplayer transactions must be for gold. You cannot securely barter an item for an item, but you can send mail with items COD.

That's going to happen with pretty much every mmo. Start frequenting WoW threads, and they'll all change to WoW gold.

Yeah, but I don't play any MMOs, and don't really follow that much info on GW2. This thread, and the WOW Sexy Fun Times thread are the only two places on all of the 'net that I read about MMOs, pretty much :p
I know the effect of google ads and so on - it's pretty handy when I'm looking for specific stuff. But this thread hasn't exactly been a massive part of my surfing lately, and it's still blocked out all other ads. Now I'm slowly beginning to see other things again...

Man, WvW (or as we call it in ventrilo, Dub Vee Dub) is the bomb. Went up three levels last night (2 from combat 1 from crafting), and got two green set pieces of gear dropped from enemy players. And no PvE whatsoever, not counting camp/tower/keep guard and lord npcs and dolyak caravans.

Yes. Enemy players drop loot and coin just like mobs. Only the bags for you to loot are dropped at YOUR feet instead of theirs, in case you're up on a wall shooting down at them or vice versa. Plus, the battlegrounds are absolutely studded with resource nodes for gathering. Also there are WvW-centric "events" going on constantly... supply convoy escorts, attacks, defenses, etc. And because everybody's leveled to 80, everybody stands a chance (though natural 80s will still have an advantage over lower levels due to having more utility/elite abilities and stuff).

For my money, there's no reason to go back into PvE at all. They even have crafting stations, merchants, repairers and trainers in WvW.

Just bear in mind if you go by yourself and run by yourself you're gonna get squashed. Go with friends or check in team chat where everybody is and go with them.

Well, to be honest, almost everything in WvW is stolen from warhammer and DAOC (and almost everything good about warhammer was stolen from DAOC, natch). It's just they also didn't have EA screwing the pooch from above, and really, most of the REALLY bad stuff in warhammer happened after Bioware took it over when mythic pretty much ceased to exist.

Edit: oh wait, you said "did DAOC RvR better"... yeah.

Been on a couple actually, while transfers are free and instant. My old guild seems dead set on Jade Quarry but queue times to get in WvW there are excruciating. So for the past few nights been on Ferguson's Crossing. But will probably end up moving again when things balance out.

Really, any server near the top of the list (it sorts by population, lowest at the top) should be good for WvW. Course it would be nice if the WvW rebalanced vs new opponents like it says it is supposed to. Blackgate and Dragon-something have been kicking fergie ass left right and center.

Blizzard where always the best at taking the ideas of others and polishing them into a better game, so i'm not really surprised... what i'm wondering now is what they would have done with WoW if they where left free reign (as i recall ANet was a result of them leaving over WoW during initial development)...

Jade Quarry
If i was on that server I'd probably be screaming PLS PROTECT THE TURTLES!!! every couple of minutes out of habit...

Which makes me realise that escort events in PvE should really help ppl understand how protecting caravans work in PvP... pretty brilliant design everywhere in this game...

Way back as the release of WoW approached, there was supposed to be a huge focus on open world conflict between Horde and Alliance. So, basically, it sounds like GW2 is what they originally invisioned WoW to be like.

And also, screw you guys for making me want to buy another game right before classes start.

Digital sales shut-down to protect server stability

Well, it's selling well. I'm wondering how it will do against WoW in the long-run with Pandaria not far away.

#78

GasBandit

GasBandit

Right now, Kaineng but that's subject to change. As a realm it's doing very poorly in WvW because it is new as of 2 days ago, and my previous server, Ferguson's Crossing, pretty much owns every single tower, camp and keep. But because of that, there's always a fight for us to find, while most of them have to stand around camping our doors while we sneak off and hit a camp somewhere, then wait for them to show up, and then they show up and we kill them till their numbers overwhelm us.

One thing I am disappointed in though is that there's no "warband" mechanic like Warhammer or WoW. Groups are 5 people max, so if you have to run multiple groups it's difficult to keep track of the other groups as they don't show up differently on the radar and not at all on the sidebar. There's this thing called "squads" which I understand also suck... you have to buy a 100g commander manual to be able to start a squad, and even then it's open-join and still not as good as a warband.

I love me some Angry Joe, but complaining about the subscription fees in MMOs is very silly. While these games still make a healthy profit, you have to hire a much larger team to maintain/update MMO games than single player ones. The way free to play games get around this is by making you pay real-life money for in-game shit (and Guild Wars 2 is no exception.)

The pressure on subscription MMOS to deliver a bang-for-buck experience at a steady, rapid pace is considerably larger than for F2P MMOs. There's a reason why the subs-MMO market is littered with failures and turned-F2P MMOs. If you can deliver that level of content and experience and people are happy paying for it, good for you.

Is anyone major even left at this point besides WoW, Rift, and EvE Online (and both WoW and Rift are F2P to 20 now)?

#95

GasBandit

I dunno if you can call them a "major" one anymore, but DAOC is still subscription based. Heck, isn't UO still subscription based? I think they're the oldest surviving MMO, since (google google google) wait, no Meridian 59 is back, and now IT is free to play. heh. Warhammer Online is also subscription, though they have an endless free trial with a low level cap.

I got an elementalist to 30 - they're great. I mostly go air because they can move fast as hell, and switch to fire when doing keep defenses. Ground-targeted AEs pass through gates, sooooo... it's fryin' time.

Right now I'm trying to get an engineer to 30 because I saw an engineer gets his own personal instant mortar as an elite skill. Along the way, though, grenades are hella boss for keep attacks and defenses, and flamethrowers are the funnest thing ever for PvE.

Cautionary tale folks - the little woman's account was hacked friday night. We couldn't figure out why she kept getting kicked offline, and while I was busy checking drivers, settings, tracerts etc, somebody got into her account, changed the e-mail address (which is the username for their purposes) and stripped all her characters of cash.

She doesn't buy gold or levels, obviously, or run hax, or browse fansites or do any of the other shit they warn you about doing. What she did have was an extremely weak password (a single, real word, no caps no numbers).

Took Arenanet about 6 hours to get to her and get her account back. They took all the cash and items from her inventories and bank. I'm just glad they didn't vendor off the gear she was wearing/wielding for a few extra silver to send off to the orient, so at least she could recover somewhat.

So. Strong, unique passwords, folks. They're not bullshitting out there.

I read once (maybe it was here) that the best way to make a strong password you'll remember is to make it out of two proper nouns that have meaning to you (like child's first name and favorite beer name, or whatever) and add your zip code to the end. Like "OliverDosequis80917" or something to that effect. A lot harder to brute force but still easy to remember.

So yesterday, finally having gotten a char past 40 (got to 30+ on two other characters then started over, I think this one's the keeper, an asura thief named - wait for it - Gas Bandit), the little woman and I finally decided to see what all the noise and big deal is about doing "CM STORY" because people have been shouting "NEED MORE FOR CM STORY" or "LFG CM STORY" in queensdale incessantly for about 2 weeks now, and you have to be 40+ to do that.

Let me tell you this - CM, or "Caudaecus' Manor" or some crap, is

PANTS

ON

HEAD

RETARDED.

I've gotten most of my levels through WvW. In my guild, I'm a notorious PvE hater. In Warhammer Online I pretty muched refused to do ANY PvE content, and even in DAOC I tried to do most of my leveling in the battlegrounds (once they became available). Last night did nothing but absolutely reinforce my opinion that MMO PvE content is a sick joke that nobody in their right mind would put themselves through, especially not when there's way more fun times and engrossing combat to be had in WvW/RvR/PvP/Whatever they're calling it this year.

I was fully decked out in level 40 masterwork armor and weapons, and practically every hit on me was a 1 hit kill from every enemy boss. Our 5 man group wiped so many times I lost count. My gear got so devastated by the end of the night I was standing there in my boxers and a pair of gloves. BTW, Asura boxer shorts have little carrots all over them. Every enemy we ran into had AE attacks you couldn't escape, 360 degree attacks, spammed fear/knockdown attacks, and whistled for backup from other guys constantly. Oh, and lest I forget, easily 10-20 times the amount of hit points ANY OTHER MOB IN THE GAME has. And this is in a game that has NO TANKS and NO HEALERS. Everybody's DPS in GW2. I'm probably actually the closest thing to a tank in the game, actually, since when dual wielding pistols I can spam a small point-blank area effect pulsing blindness ability that makes anyone in melee range of me miss every attack as long as I keep the aura going. But it was no use. The only way we could make any progress at all was to pull things back 90 rooms and all run in circles like spastic children screaming for candy while we desperately hoped to not be the one targeted on the next attack, while slowly whittling down the enemy's life a quarter pixel at a time.

We went because we heard the loot was "sooooo good." Well, I came out of there with a backpack full of trash blues not even worth salvaging, a soulbound yellow (rare) hat, and a yellow staff I couldn't use and prices on the trading post for them barely covered the cost of repairs to the gear I went in with.

Man, fuck PVE. Right in the god damned ear. That shit's for mental defectives. BY mental defectives.

(I'm told by guildmates the dungeon's difficulty was patched upward recently because Anet thought the dungeon was being "farmed" too much... gah).

They must have really buffed it because a couple weeks ago when I did CM Story(IIRC) it was the easy peezy. I actually had a harder time in the first story mode dungeon at launch.

I shit you not, the golem in the garden, the first boss, wiped us all immediately with a single spin.

And then it did it 5 more times.

I did that instance twice with guys in and out of the guild. We one shot the entire content. It was also boring.

They probably beefed it far too much.

@Li3n

Weirdly i skipped CM at 40 and did the lvl 50 one before, and then went back after the patch that beefed it...

Besides that fact that there where way too many normal (non-silver/gold) enemies in spaces that where way too tight it wasn't that hard, guess after all those AC runs we where all used to dungeons.

I shit you not, the golem in the garden, the first boss, wiped us all immediately with a single spin.
Yeah, a lot of bosses have the annoying tendency to do that... i'm not a fan, but i guess it's how they make sure you have to use the dodge or die.

But nothing compares to the big fire elemental boss in the asura starting area... there was like 20+ of us on the event that triggers the boss and only 1-2 where still alive when the boss manifested... and then it kept spawning fire elementals and fire waves of doom... it took over and hour to take it down (i got bored and went back to exploring the map).

BTW, did Shego evr get this game? Because the Guardian is exactly the Paladin type thing she said she liked.

It's not harder then AC imo, he's just not use to PvE, PvP fights don't have any equivalent of the on-shot-kill bosses dungeons are full of.

It's easy to tell based one this:

ON Everybody's DPS in GW2.

Using my healing staff skills made way more of a difference then my dmg most of the time, even though the healing was nothing compared to a GW1 Monk keeping the whole team alive.

And of course if someone didn't dance around and dodge the big attacks, and then no one rezzed them before they went down for good, we wiped in 5 seconds... which is an annoying difficulty mechanic imo, but it is what it is.

And i never lost money in dungeons from repair, not even the first time i did AC story (lvl 30) and we spent an hour at the Lovers (of course repair cost for under 30 gear are pretty low).

Oh, and if you think the Golem in CM was bad, wait until Twilight Arbor at 50... the final fight pits you against
Destiny's Edge
, and they rezz if you don't do enough dmg to the boss after downing one.

Don't worry, I'm done with PvE. At least the dungeons. I still do my dailies where I can, but I'm pretty much back to never leaving the borderlands, and sometimes the little woman wants to go get explorer credit for a whole zone so I go with her, and that necessarily entails PvE.

I picked this up and played it for a bit.

I don't really get how this is any different from WoW. The PvP seems more indepth, but that's about it. Could someone school me on this? Kind of feel like I just threw away 50$.

I bought it for the WvW, myself. Basically all the best ideas from DAOC and Warhammer Online with a modern game engine and no EA to screw it up.

I found it's easier to do the dailies in WvW actually.

Especially the kill variety thing... i wonder if that's because of pets (every zerg seems to have at least 4-5) or if players count as different types...

Well event chains can be way more interesting then normal quests... renown hearts where a compromise because people where confused by events at first. That and the more action oriented combat (standing still = death) are pretty much it i guess.

I like to think it is what they were trying to accomplish with WAR before EA meddled with, then kicked out mythic and gave the reins to Bioware.

Or as a guildmate put it, "Funny how it took ArenaNet to make DAOC2 correctly."

Okay maybe not. I apparently tried the first Guild Wars game. It's telling me I have an account. So I go to get in and I can't find a password that works. Does it have a thing to send me a password? Yup. If I have the serial number from the first game. Which I don't.

*sigh* I'll keep trying.

And even if it is a WoW clone to an extent, there's no monthly fee, so 50.00 is the most you'll every pay for it (unless you want the expansions that will eventually come out).

Yup. I always use Edrondol the first time. But hwat's interesting is that the emails I got stated that everything was cool and that a new account had been set up. But then I couldn't log in as it said the password was bad. Which is crap. But hey.

ah try a password change, it needs one uppercase, one lowercase and one number and has to be so long as well. Early into GW2 they had made the changes to what a password has to be.
