Halforums Academy 2 Character Creation Thread

It’s time to opt in and roll up your characters for Halforums Academy 2! In case you’re new or have forgotten, here’s a link to last year’s Halforums Academy threads.

As with last year, there will be no explicit content in the feed, though the story will undoubtedly involve characters “getting busy” with each other. Unlike the sims, where the action is watched from on high by an omniscient being, Artificial Academy requires me to run the game from the perspective of one of the students, though which student that is will change from day to day. I do my best to not have the student act out of character (in accordance with your descriptions in your character sheet) when I am in control of them. You may roll male or female, and there’s no real problem with you creating a character who is not “you,” but if you ask me trying to make your avatar as similar to yourself as possible is part of the fun.

EVEN IF YOU HAD A CHARACTER ROLLED LAST TIME, IF YOU WANT IN THIS TIME YOU NEED TO REROLL AS THE CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES HAVE CHANGED AND THERE IS NO “IMPORT.”

Major changes include new personality types, an overhaul of the traits/quirks, elimination of the “tastes” section, the addition of fighting styles and tokens, exams, grades, and how clubs work has changed. It is now possible for students to play hooky from class/clubs, change clubs, and be eliminated from the game via pregnancy (both parents drop out). Murder is still possible, and still removes both the killer and the victim from the game, unless one or the other makes a lucky saving throw (unless both do, in which case they cancel out and both are still removed). Students may now make plans to go on dates on sundays, the dates are part of gameplay, and every other saturday is an exam day. There is a “teacher” slot in the class but I doubt we will be using it as the “teacher” is still the same age and stature as the student body, just with imposed hurdles and consequences to interaction with the students.

Unlike last year, I’ve created a blogger blog to contain the updates, which I think will help presentation some and lend some more permanence to the story in case something happens to the thread (you never know). That blog address is http://halforumsacademy2.blogspot.com/ though I will still create a discussion/update thread where links to updates will be posted.

This space reserved for cast list. Names will turn blue/pink as I complete their character, with a link to a picture of said character. Requests for changes to appearance must be made before the game proper starts. In the unlikely event we get more volunteers than the class can hold, slots will be first-come-first served, with a waiting list of students waiting to transfer in if and when slots become available.

I had a number of contingency plans, ranging from "no teacher" to this. This was the contingency if nobody rolled evil.
That said, Ms. Dieb's personality, status as a teacher, and level 3 virtue means it will be very difficult (though not impossible) to become romantically entangled with her, which makes it difficult to trigger a stabby episode.

Mine are like that IRL, too. When I had my hair dyed auburn they looked green most of the time, even more so if I was wearing particular shades of lipstick.

Alright, so obviously I'll start working on this tonight. I got ideas, big plans. I'm thinking I'm gonna try doing the updates in video form this time, not just text descriptions with screenshots. The videos will probably be a mixture of gameplay footage and screenshots, all with my dulcet tones doing voiceover narration. The enforced 1st person limited POV is still in effect, same as last time. I'll still also wind up each day with the leaderboards, and summarize the interpersonal relationships each game week, probably after each week's sunday.

Also I'm working on a sort of "opening credits" type intro sequence, which may take a day or three to get worked out.

So, go ahead with your lives, folks, and this space will be updated with a link when the new discussion thread is posted for the story updates, probably in a couple days.

(and yes I know badly I tend to overestimate time lengths, but trust me, video editing is more time consuming than text descriptions, even if I did have to spend half the night thinking up screenshot filename gags).

Hazel is really hard to dial in, because the game's eye color values are set by sliders for hue, saturation, and brightness. That makes all things relating to brown a little tricky, but trying to get brown (which is low-brightness red-orange) to touch green, when they're separated on the hue slider by yellow? Fuhgeddaboutit. Most people who said "hazel" ended up with "dark greenish yellow."

I'll try to ramp it up a bit. I chose the 3rd thickest arched eyebrows there were, but the arch is mitigated by the big smile your character has causing them to "raise."

Here's the absolute most I'm able to arch the eyebrows. As you can see, the facial expression your character adopts due to your personality choice causes a lot of the arch to be lost (left) as opposed to the neutral expression on the right (which you'll never see in game, pretty much).

When I noticed all the high int stats everybody was rolling, I thought, "maybe I should have imposed a maximum number of 'points' to spend on int/str/mor/soc, something like 13, so if you want to be 5 in something, something else is gonna be 2 or lower"... but hindsight and all that. Welp, maybe when AA3 comes out!

Yes, that's a thing. There's all kinds of crazy things about exams. Not only do your exam results have effects on your moods, but there's this whole other "lewd promise" gameplay element I haven't even gotten into yet, where a romantically interested person might try to "motivate" their target with an incentive the friday before the exam... to be delivered when grades come out.

Maybe be even harsher next time, on that only 2-3 people can be 5s (for each attribute) in the entire class. And same for the 1s. I just wonder how things would shake out if it was slightly more realistic is all.

Yeah, gotta work out exactly how that point system would work, though. For some people, using morality as a dump stat might be seen as advantageous. If I limit to 13 points for all 4 stats, You could go 4 int 4 str 4 soc 1 mor and probably have a very popular kid with excellent grades and who wins most fights... in the short term. Long term they might get into trouble when trying to sleep with everything that moves comes back to bite them in the ass.

I guess I never really thought too long about it because I assumed people would be rolling expys of themselves, and would rank their stats akin to how they considered their own attributes. I think for the most part it worked out, except for a couple people who obviously gamed the system a little, but at least we don't have any 5/5s

Well, technically speaking, yes there is. It comes with the game, which in this hemisphere, is only available by pirate torrent

I might make some small change recommendations - don't count sexual orientation toward the point total (really I'd not even count virtue toward it.. just, say, 10 points to be split between INT/STR/SOC).
