So does one achieve a low popularity by being actively disliked or just unknown? I am guessing the former with the schemer trait doing me in.

Like and love add points, neutral feelings have no effect, dislike and hate subtract points. I think it's a double whammy with schemer and Class President.. you're all up in everybody's business and breaking up PDAs like crazy, which doesn't win friends.

I think this is the only episode where I haven't talked to someone about sex. I like to imagine Ash-ly is all sweet and delicate at school, but she has a full dominatrix outfit for dates or something. Whips and chains at least.

Hah, unfortunately, sucker punches are only available to NPCs. When the hand of fate controls you, you have to fight straight up and fair.

Ronan's a controversial character. A couple people really like him, a couple people can't stand him (like Eriol), so the numbers kind of cancel, and make him look like he's unpopular when really he does have friends.

Welp, thanks to some punk ass piece of sh*t that vandalized my car in the night, I am home awaiting car repairs with time to kill. The first episode was amusing and I'm looking forward to when my character will join in the chaos.

On a tangentially related note, famous japanese-to-english game specialist company JAST USA just launched a new english language website and is having a week long sale to celebrate.
I can honestly say if it wasn't for JAST USA I probably would never have gone down the path that led to me playing any of the Artificial Academy games, as back in the day I played the hell out of Seasons of Sakura.
Er, and Nocturnal Illusion.. and 3 Sisters Story.
