Ah, yes, the infighting. Well, there are a number of problems with the referendum anyway, so it's going to face legal challenges inside the country, and the US isn't going to do anything until congress receives an official request for statehood, which won't happen unless it comes from the governor, who is against statehood.It's the leadership in Puerto Rico. They just elected new people to office, and some of the ones at the top are very, very much against statehood.
Chances are it'll drag out until the next election, where another more carefully worded proposal will be put to the people, which the governor will probably not be able to continue to oppose without legal problems.
Of course by then they may also convince the majority to vote against it.
Still, this is another step toward statehood.
