When I saw it I thought my browser was acting up so I kept trying to get it to do it again. Of course it didn't until I scrolled down but then I figured out what it was supposed to be.

Properly animated, a huggy stuffed animal can be scary. Impropery animated, the most nightmarish horror from beyond becomes a bad chuck-e-cheese animatronic.

In this case the animation was perfect so that throws a wrench in your theory. You can be startled by the quick movements of anything but that doesn't make it actually scary. It's like a little boy jumping out from behind a shower curtain and laughing "haha scared you!" no you didn't. being surprised or startled is not the same as actually being afraid.

It wasn't the animation alone for me, it was the sudden sound along with the animation that got me. I suspect that if I saw the animation alone with no sound, it wouldn't have had quite the impact.
But then, my speakers were probably higher volume than average, as I was previously listening to quiet music.
