It's shit like this Dave...

We've got enough useless spam threads appearing in the WHAT'S NEW as it is. We don't need staff to post more of that!

Is there a way to finally get this issue resolved? I know people like to post in those but annoys the HELL out of the other half of the forums. Can't they be moved them in a spam marked folder and no longer appear on the WHAT'S NEW list? Or be able to mark them off an ignorable? Maybe delete them altogether? <---

I logged on after a long day and found half a dozen threads of interest, out of 40+ actively on the list since last night with 30 of them absolutely useless since 2010 with topics like :

"POST AFTER ME!"

DERP DERP :D

RGLGLGLGLGLGLGLGGHGHHERHWEH!!!!

Seriously.....
Can something be done?
Any changes in the works?
ANYTHING?

PLEAAASE

Am I the only one at a wit's end annoyed by this? Losing interest of checking the site?

I think the haiku thread is a way more intellectually stimulating excercise than other e/n threads, such as "say something about the previous poster" or "one word thread," etc. At least this one requires the generation of actual content.

I'm waiting to see what the XF 1.1 abilities for ignore are. If the ability is not in there I plan on doing a kind of "nuclear option" which would be to create a "Forum Game" sub and then exclude it from the "What's New" button. It'll be excluded for everyone. The problem with that is that they will die as nobody will see them unless they subscribe to the subboard.

You're not alone Jay, but get this, we're the minority. The majority of the board participates and enjoys the "+1post lol" threads. That's definitely their perogative.

As for Dave's solution, I don't agree with it believe it or not. The only way I could see a resolution come to light is an "Ignore Thread" option, that way we can tag an entire thread to be ignored for the forum's lifetime. Any other solution will upset one party.

He's a bit brash, but he's right. The reason she doesn't see a problem is because she's part of the group that he's complaining about.

She's acting like she's staring at a brick wall, where half of us don't like the threads and the other half does. It's a chain-link fence, it's easy to see both sides, whichever side you're on.

Maybe that's why we need the ignore function. then we won't have a chain link fence and you can go on your merry way not complaining about something other people like by making pointless threads.

Just sayin.

As you said it isn't half this half that it is the majority of us who enjoy the games. If you don't like them just scroll past them. We shouldn't have to not be able to get to the popular threads just because the people who don't like them.. well don't like them.

LOL

This forum is truly unbelievable on how easily some people can get butt hurt when someone else's opinion different than their own is expressed.

How dare this bastard of a poster boldly state that the spam threads that bring nothing to the table and is a problem for him to enjoy the forums? What is he EVEN talking about, as far as I know, all threads are equally enjoyable! Let me go right ahead and post so that my already inaccurate post number can go up a few numbers with a few crappy posts in the "ONE WORD DERP THREAD" "DERP IN THIS THREAD ABOUT A DERP SITUATION NO ONE CARES ABOUT", "SUPER DERP SAIYAN SOMETHING ABOUT THE PREVIOUS POSTER WITH RANDOM NUMBERS AND TV TECHNOLOGY FEATURING A NOT SO AMUSING EXTRA LONG TITLE THAT GOES ON 2 LINES TO PURPOSELY ANNOY OTHER POSTERS WHO HATE THESE THREADS WITHOUT A CHANCE THAT A MOD WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT".

Basically, this forum has an excellent tool with the "WHAT'S NEW" functionality that is completely useless as it displays a bunch of useless and unblockable shit. That's just my take, just like someone else would feel different as to what they'd find uninteresting in the sports forum or the political forum or even the gaming forum. Everyone is different but I'll be damned if I can't rant without having to use a derp thread.

All I'm advocating is to have a serious look as to the way things are headed. Personally, I think HF can do much better with those type of threads and most of all I don't think staff should add to the problem with posting open derp threads, even though I agree with you GB that is a notch higher IQ wise to what some of our "overthinkers" may think.

I don't think anyone is anything but confused, Jay. Certainly not "butt hurt". Also where is the post tally? I didn't know they were still counting posts.

Also the game threads are FUN. It is not about post count or anything it is about having fun. I have made a couple of my best forum friends in the Say Something threads so I deny the don't get anything out of them bit as well.

Maybe that's why we need the ignore function. then we won't have a chain link fence and you can go on your merry way not complaining about something other people like by making pointless threads.

Ignore function wouldn't prevent the problem Jay/I/others are complaining about, the threads would still flood the "New Threads" update button. So no, it's not a solution.

@makare: The problem here is you keep saying you don't see a problem. It is a problem for some. I'm willing to say I understand why it is fun for you, but you're unwilling to see why it's a bother for us. Your response is "Everything's fine, leave it as it is" My response is "there's a problem, it needs to be fixed, but without harming either party".

See the problem?

then dave's ignore threads thing will help ya. either that or just deal with it, cause as you said, you're kinda in the minority here. Jay making a thread complaining about it isn't going to make the games go away.

M

makare

Why? And it can't involve the concept of padding post counts because I doubt anyone gives a shit OR talking about stuff that "no one gives a shit about" because thats always a risk regardless of how or where you post.

And on the law school thing you probably did the right thing. It's a fucking pain in the ass.

This is what I get for having my power go out for 3 hours. I miss all the good stuff (and my house gets REALLY fucking hot!)

As I stated, when I find a solution I'll most certainly do it. I think the "Nuclear Option" would be the best option if XF 1.1 doesn't do the trick.

Actually there's another possibility that will depend on 1.1 as well. They are adding prefixes and User Groups. I can create a user group that has the same levels as Registered but exclude them from the "Continuous" thread sub, which would mean that the posts would stay off of their "What's New".

What do you think of them apples?

Dave

The Nuclear Option would be putting the threads like that into a sub and then excluding the entire sub from the What's New button...but it would be that way for everyone. I think the user group or prefix option works much better.

If he were the only one I wouldn't consider it. But I've had more than a few people mention it.
