Valve reveals 'The Sacrifice' DLC for L4D1 and 2, digital comic

In short:
- New DLC that will work in both L4D and L4D2 (owners of L4D2 get to play as the original four)
- L4D2 gets a Valve official remake of "No Mercy"
- 150 page, 4-part digital comic that details events leading up to the new DLC, and will have "a more definitive finale which will effect the future content for the series"
- Free on the PC, $7 on the 360

The article at Joystiq says "the content will work across both games". I'm curious if that means it's just available to owners of either, or if there is cross-game online play and L4D will be able to join a game with L4D2 players.

EDIT: SPOILERS for the comics are contained within this thread, and possibly for the expansion as well.

I'm betting it just means it is available for both products, but different versions won't be able to game together.

heh, I still haven't even bought the sequel. I guess I did end up boycotting it and didn't realize it. :)

Loved it, looking forward to the rest!

Yeah... I'm hoping we get confirmation on what they do to those immune to the virus. Right now we're all speculating that they just shoot them for being carriers, but we don't know if immune and carrier are the same thing yet.
Shooting them would be stupid... they're the only one guaranteed to keep the human race going. Quarantine would be the most logical step... then again humans are idiots.

True, but The Parish in Left 4 Dead 2 made it apparent that they were lining people up to the wall and shooting them, and we know that this has to do with these people being carriers and it's been mentioned that the carriers don't get sick from the infection. They may have simply been doing this to keep it from spreading during the emergency, but it's not known if Immune = Carrier yet. We also don't know why some people are immune and others aren't... it's entirely possible that it's not genetic and can't be passed on through heredity.

Left 4 Dead: The Sacrifice - Oct. 15

Wow.

They really are killing the carriers, even though carriers would be the ones who could repopulate if the zombie thread could ever be taken down. That's incredibly fucked up.

And the 2nd comic says
it's genetic on the father's side... so they are being retarded shooting them. But it looks like CEDA was against shooting them, so i guess it's not policy at least.

Eh... have we been reading another comic?!

While the idiot that pretty much screwed them all by starting a damn crescendo wanted to shoot the carriers the official policy seemed to be containment... and apparently CEDA objected to their methods either way, so it might just be no official policy yet.

Oh my god... it took me a moment to get the significance of Zoey's dad, when I got to that page, but... holy shit!
That was kinda way too soon for her to be in a frame of mind to do that imo...

Here's my question though... if the Original 4 already knew that the government was executing people who were carriers, why the fuck didn't they warn the L4D2 group about it? It would seem like a common courtesy and it wouldn't have taken but a minute or two to do. I know the OBVIOUS answer is because Valve hadn't decided yet, but it does seem like a plothole now.

How did I not immediately recognize that the artist is Mike Oeming?! I love his work in Powers.

I actually feel bad for the two soldiers fighting with Lou and Francis, because you know they won't make it out alive.

If Valve wanted they could easily survive... the original 4 being carriers and all would mean they couldn't really stay with them at the bridge because they'd have to wear the gas masks all the time.

@AshburnerX

Better question, why didn't they invite the new 4 to join up with them...

Didn't you see the big pile of burning bodies while Zoey was talking about what would happen to them?

Or the doctor saying the only reason he was alive was because they hoped he'd find a cure? That implies they've been killing carriers otherwise. Not all of them, obviously, since they have a bunch in containment it seems, but they have been killing them.

It's pretty unlikely all those bodies were Carriers. It's more likely they were just Infected who stumbled too close to the complex and were killed by the soldiers. They are likely burning the bodies to help stop the spread of the infection to their own people.

The behavior at the meeting of the two teams is really puzzling. I'd think that warning the other survivors that they're carriers is just as pressing as warning them about about being shot for it. "Hey! Be careful about coming into contact with other people, you could infect them!"

What does this mean for poor Virgil? Is he a carrier or soon to become a zombie because of his contact with Nick, Rochelle, Coach and Ellis? Will he pick up some non-carriers, who will then turn because of contact with him?

I don't think any non-carriers would be moving around alive at this point on land. They'd have to be in isolated places at this point (bunker, boat, plane, helicopter). So either Virgil's a carrier, or he likely won't be hurting anyone.

What about an oil rig? Say, for instance, that Virgil is a carrier, and he finds an oil rig where the workers have been holed-up and he offers them news and help. Unfortunately they get infected by him, and turn into zombies.

If Virgil was, so was his wife. He mentioned specifically that she had been bit. However, he would have HAD to have been one if he had been ferrying survivors up and down the river all this time, especially considering he was with the L4D2 crew long enough that he'd have needed fuel for his boat.

It'd be easier to tell who was and wasn't a Carrier if we'd get some kind of time frame from being Infected to turning into one. Without it, we really have no REAL basis to declare immunity.

According to the graffiti it's anywhere between 5 minutes and a couple of days...

And the comic points out that the chopper guy was bitten, and that the virus isn't always airborne... so basically anything the writers feel like is what the virus behaves like.

And l4d1 also had boat people who apparently didn't turn while the O4 where there.

True, but they were kicked off the boat before they turned. If they had turned while they were on the boat, it's likely the survivors would have just taken that and been home free. So ether the boat people were Carriers, or there's an empty boat out there.

The doc mentions that it's not always airborne... and the chopper pilot must have turned pretty fast for them to crash... i doubt they spent more time in the chopper then the boat. Of course if the graffiti is right there's no constant time table for turning...

Here's MY question though... So if the order is No Mercy, Crash Course, Death Toll, Blood Harvest, and then The Sacrifice... were does Dead Air fit into the picture? They didn't mention getting picked up by a military transport before, so it's unlikely they've done it yet. It's possible they'll do it in the next few comics, but it seems like another plot hole.
Did that plane even count as a military transport?! For all we know it was just left there and someone with a pilots license hid in the cockpit... or even a military pilot that got left behind would probably not count as teh military picking them up.

From the way they're placed in the game the order is No Mercy, Death Toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest.

We DO know for sure that The Last Stand is canonical though, as everyone is alive at the start of that.
Did you mean it's not canonical?! Because there's no way it makes sense for them to start up a noisy motor when they obviously had no way out.

Pilot had been bitten, or so they say.

I actually removed this part from the original post because I looked back and Francis actually did mention that the plane crashed. So yeah, they actually never reached a safe zone.

*facepalm* Yes, I did. Fixing the post.

Pilot had been bitten, or so they say.
Which means we have no idea whether or not the boat people would have been infected even if they where not immune.

You think the doc was a carrier?! I find it more likely that he was scared the military personnel was close to freaking out and shooting them all...

BTW, the graffiti about the military shooting carriers seems to imply it's not an organized thing: Graffiti - The Left 4 Dead Wiki - Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors, Infected, walkthroughs, news, and more

Upstairs room of two story house next to trailer

  • 10 PM TONIGHT MEET HERE WE GO OVER THE FENCE
    • IT'S SUCIDE
    • THE MILITARY IS SHOOTINGTO KILL
    • THEY CAN'T KILL ALL OF US
    • YES THEY CAN
On the first floor of a half-demolished house:

  • CEDA abandoned us, the military fenced us in.
  • WE'RE NOT SICK
  • If you can read this, the military has cut us off. We are being left here to die! --Patricia West, 1977-2009

  • Carriers = Zombies
    • Kill All Carriers

  • DON'T BREAK THE QUARANTINE LINE
    • If you help anyone from the compound They won't EVAC you
      • There's NOTHING WRONG with these people!
    • THOSE ARE HUMAN BEINGS OVER THERE THEY'RE BEING SHOT FOR NOTHING
      • They are being shot to save you They are infected If you let them in I'll kill you myself
Just looks like they where shooting carriers that tried to break quarantine...

The doc is wearing a mask--those don't keep disease out, they keep disease in.
Wait, so back when the pig flu was around all those people wearing masks for protection where doing it wrong?! That's funny.

Now this 2nd guy posting ther rambles on a bit about stuff that's obviously false but he does have an interesting hypotesis on why the virus might appear to be airborne at times: Talk:Green Flu - The Left 4 Dead Wiki - Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors, Infected, walkthroughs, news, and more

The virus being present in airborne "spores" that come from Smokers and Boomers exploding would make more sense then it losing the very useful ability to be airborne through mutation... we should go suggest it to Valve.
