http://www.omaha.com/article/20110105/NEWS97/110109863#shooter-at-millard-south-critical-injuries

My daughter's school went on lockdown because of a shooting. Police know who it is and are looking for the shooter.

News say two people are injured - 1 critially - and at least one of them is an adult male.

Will post more as I get details. My wife is headed in to the church next door to the school right now as that's where we are to pick up the kids early.

Jiarn

My best wishes that everything is ok Dave. I'd have jumped fences and broken windows to find my kids in that situation. Keep us updated.

Dave

Dave

Just got a text/email from the school:

Millard South High School is in a lock down. Students are safe. Police are in control of the building. Police advise that parents go to the church just to the west of the school (Divine Shepard Church) where they can wait until police provide an orderly dismissal of students.

DO NOT COME to Millard South High School property.

We will update you as soon as possible.

Holy crap, Dave, that's some school day! I hope your daughter and everyone else is okay.

And no, you don't need to keep us posted. You need to get your daughter home, safe and sound. She needs her dad more than the forum needs Dave the floppy-titted admin.

Just wanted to say that, man... I ain't a praying type of guy, but I'll be thinking about your daughter and her schoolmates.

Update:

The shooter is in custody. He went into the school and shot the Principal and one other person in the office. The Principal, Dr. Case, was taken by helicopter to the hospital and the other person's condition is unknown. I've spoken with my daughter and although she was close to the shooting she didn't see anything and is fine.

Edit:

The shooter is sort of in custody. They had him surrounded in his car but the police have called it in as Code 4 - DOA. So he probably shot himself.

Robert's last Facebook update.
I know this is still a serious situation, but I read Omaha as Obama. When I realized it was Omaha, I had a chuckle.

How old is this kid? Is this an example of typical High School grammar? I feel sad.

Just saw this on CNN. I'm glad your daughter is safe, Dave. Scary stuff :(

#33

At one point today I had on:

  1. Television
  2. Radio
  3. Police Scanner
  4. Twitter (Millard South is the #1 trending Topic in the WORLD today. Last time that happened? Westroads shooting.)
  5. Facebook

But even though my daughter is fine there are a number of people who will be more affected by this.

  1. Detective Robert Butler Sr. and his family. Father of the shooter. An Omaha Detective.
  2. Principal Case and his family.
  3. Asst. Principal Kaspar and her family.
  4. The kids who were at lunch and right next to the office when the shooting happened.
  5. A friend of my daughter's whose mother was one of the victims of the Von Maur shooting at the Westroads Mall. How this is affecting her I have no idea.

I've been manning the phones here at home. Since this went nationwide I'm hearing from everybody. Even though my daughter is usually banned from the computer on school nights, I think I'm going to let her get on tonight. I doubt she has any homework and it'll be good for her to talk it out with her friends both near and far.

#39

Krisken

Probably better that way. The sooner the news reaches you after a shooting, the more likely he passed away. He'll be in critical condition for a few days before moving to ICU.

#40

Dave

Dave

One thing I do have to say, and that's that the Omaha Police Department did an awesome job in responding. From first shooting to apprehending the guy (or finding him as the case may be) it was only 30 minutes. They had his information posted before he left the area. Fantastic job with this and getting the information out.

#45

Dave

Dave

Update:

Sammi was huddled in a classroom for over 2 hours. She was in class when it came over the intercom: "Attention: The school is under Code Red lockdown. This is NOT a test!" After that, the teacher moved them all into a corner that could not be seen from the door. They were not allowed to text or call anyone or speak as it had to be as silent as possible. They had also shut off the lights so it was dark in the room. For 2 hours. They had NO idea what was going on, if the shooter was still in the school or anything else.

Once they finally found out what was going on they still had to stay there for a long time. About 4 hours later they were finally released. To get released to their parents they had to go through 3 individual checkpoints and get counted and marked off. After the third checkpoint they were released ONLY if their parents were there. A great number of kids who were eating lunch at the time had to hide in the kitchen.

Now to Robert. My daughter says he was a nice kid who was very funny and fun to be around. He worked with kids and had a big heart. This morning he was suspended by Dr. Kaspar for driving his car onto the football field and doing a lot of damage to the turf. He left, went home, posted the above on Facebook, grabbed his dad's gun and went back to the school.

Right now there's a lot of people blaming the kid's dad, the school administration and whatever else they think can make them justify what happened. But this kid messed up and didn't know how to handle it. I don't know why he did what he did and I doubt anyone ever will. But he deserves our thoughts as much as the others.

#46

Piotyr

Piotyr

I'm glad nobody else got hurt (physically). I don't think there was anything the school's administration could have done better, and suspending a kid for driving on the football field is hardly out of line.

#47

XSammiKaneX

Robert was charismatic and outgoing. He worked with children, gave his all for his friends, and he was always smiling. He did whatever he could to help people. It's so difficult to believe that such a sweet boy could do such a horrible thing.
Yes, he was suspended earlier today for tearing up turf on the football field. He then left and came back during the lunch hour. However, it is unclear whether or not this was his only motive, but I think it is safe to assume that it was his breaking point.
He walked into the school, shot Dr. Kasper in the head first, and then shot Dr. Case. He then fired a random shot down the main hall way and proceeded to flee the scene.
Dad informed you all of their conditions, I believe, but now it's being said that they aren't sure if Dr. Kasper will make it.
Thankfully, nobody else was injured.
We still have school tomorrow, as far as we all know. Students and teachers should soon be able to pick up their cars and take them home.

I do not know why Robert did what he did, but his father does not deserve any blame. Robert made his own choices, God rest his soul and may he rest in peace, and sadly other shall have to suffer for them. We can only hope that Dr. Case and Kasper recover and hope that some good comes from this.

Such a tragic event made even more tragic by the loss of life and the fact that we will probably never know the full reasons the kid did what he did. Obviously Rob Jr.'s actions are nobody's responsibility but his own. I'm not even sure I can fault the father for leaving the weapon accessible, since were I an officer of the law, I would want to make sure my family could defend themselves if someone with a grudge against me (or my position) came knocking at/in my door and I was not at home. It's a shame he decided not to face up to his actions. I honestly don't know why he would've thought this was something worthwhile enough to throw away his life. If he were going to sacrifice himself, I would've hoped it would be for something more meaningful than mitigating his own embarrassment, and not in a way which brought suspicion and dishonor on his family.

I know some of the above may sound a bit...cold, but I just can't think of someone deciding to sacrifice themselves for anything that wasn't undeniably Epic (at least to them) in nature, and certainly not spur-of-the-moment. I almost wonder if his intended target was really his father, and the school was merely the billboard upon which he decided to write his message.

That's horrible. Something like this will always leave people with more questions than answers. Sadly those questions will never be answered.

All I can say is I send my sympathies and hope you and their families never experience a tragedy like this again.

High school is a tough time, but there's never an excuse for this.

More and more we need to teach the younger generation that things get better. High school is when you first really start to notice the bullshit all around you and how life is not and never will be fair and so it seems like a really challenging time. I don't know what all this kid was dealing with besides his suspension but I wish he had known that his problems won't mean a thing latter on in life.

Dude, any problem that makes you shoot someone and then kill yourself is either way more serious then a suspension or the result of some mental illness... not likely to just go away after high school is over.

#66

phil

phil

I disagree, to a point. Obviously there will always be people who are just messed up for whatever reason and there's not much anyone can do with them. I'm not convinced this kid, or most kids that age are like that. If what Sammi says is true and he helped younger kids a lot and was a generally good kid then I'm thinking he just got to some breaking point that only seems as bleak as it is because you're in high school and everything is more dramatic when you're 18.

Maybe he was a bad kid at home, and this suspension meant getting kicked out of his home. Or maybe he was really good and this was the most trouble he'd ever been in and he feared an extreme punishment from his parents. I don't know him, his parents or anyone involved so I can't say. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to this then him having some kind of go crazy and kill yourself and others "mental illness"

#67

North_Ranger

North_Ranger

I'm in no shape or fashion qualified to even guess what was going through this young man's head when he picked up the gun. If anyone here is, it's likely Sammi herself. She knew him, and by the way you wrote, Sammi, it sounds like you too were pretty shook up by all this. Not just because of the shooting, but because it was someone you knew and apparently considered a friend.

I can't even begin to fathom what that must feel like. But if you ever need someone to talk to... well, your dad's got a bunch of us weirdos here, all ready to lend a shoulder to lean on and an ear for listening.

I'm sorry to hear about Dr Kaspar. Godspeed for them and their family. No one should have to go like that... And I hope you, Dave and Sammi, will get over this well. I'm sorry if that sounds a little awkward, I'm just not very good at giving condolences in English.

Take care, okay?

Let them protest. It's their right as Americans, but I sure hope they know that they're facing another army by messing with the Patriots. Exactly. They do this crap to get negative reactions for which they can sue for money to feed their hate. They want our attention. They want people to be angry about it and outraged and they want people to lash out so that they can try to prosecute them.

When most adults tell teens that "they have it so good" it's because they see their own childhood with rose-colored goggles, and can't empathize with a modern teenager's situation. After all, you've got mortgage, car repairs, career, money, bills, etc to worry about. All your snot-nosed punk kid has to worry about is looking cool and getting invited to next weeks party. Being a teenager sucks. Most adults forget that.

If I were to look back and tell myself that High School was without a doubt the greatest point of my life to this point, I'd seriously have to reevaluate the kind of life I was living.

The only way I'd go back to High School, or my teen years is if I could go back knowing what I know now.

You know, my high school years sucked. I was bullied badly till about grade 10 and I had to be shipped off to a private school just so I could actually graduate instead of failing everything. I sure as hell wouldn't want to go back and do it again though... *shudders*

Thank you so much. That means a lot to me and I appreciate it. It's a difficult time for all of us, but we all have amazing support. The whole community is behind us. The ribbon I have as my photo right now, is the profile picture of over 500 people on Facebook right now. From South, from other schools, from Omaha, from Nebraska, even from the students that were here for the exchange program (Germany). There are so many things being done for the people effected and we've all come together. Our school's saying is "I am Millard South. You are Millard South. We are Millard South." and now we all see that it is so true. Thank you all for your support. It is greatly appreciated.

Dwayne: I wish I could just sleep until I was eighteen and skip all this crap-high school and everything-just skip it.
Frank: Do you know who Marcel Proust is?
Dwayne: He's the guy you teach.
Frank: Yeah. French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads. But he's also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he uh... he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of his life, 'cause they made him who he was. All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didn't learn a thing. So, if you sleep until you're 18... Ah, think of the suffering you're gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don't get better suffering than that.

Exactly. They do this crap to get negative reactions for which they can sue for money to feed their hate. They want our attention. They want people to be angry about it and outraged and they want people to lash out so that they can try to prosecute them.
Damn... sometimes I wonder what the heck Dave has done that his daughter is so reasonable and level-headed.

Well I'm glad Sammi's okay.

High school didn't suck for me, but it certainly didn't rock either. I wasn't picked on much but I never got invited to the big parties. I spent my weekends playing D&D and doing stuff with my Boy Scout troop. Senior year was a bit better because we moved overseas and I went to a tiny international school (graduating class of 15 students). Like most high schoolers, I kinda just existed.

College, however, was a blast for me.

Woah I read about this earlier but didn't realize it hit so close to you Dave. Glad your daughter is okay and I will take a moment of silence for the sad loss of life.

Here's a comforting thought: if the WBC continues down it's present path, eventually the inbreeding will catch up with them and future generations won't have a chance of getting into even As Soon As Your Check Clears You Graduate Upstairs School of Lawyering.

Here's what I'm going to do to the WBC people.

I'm going to walk up to them, look them right in the eyes, say "I forgive you." then walk away.

On the "it gets better": It does, and it's so, so stupid how adults say childhood's the best years of your life. I didn't believe that even when I was a kid--I couldn't wait to grow up, and I'd never wanna go through all that again.

Kids want to be adults so they can do whatever they want.

Adults want to be kids so they can do almost whatever they want again. :p

I missed this while it was happening, but I definitely agree that Sammi's being incredibly strong and intelligent about this. Dave, I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Great job raising your daughter. Sammi, great job being you.

Best wishes to everyone affected by this.

And as for best years and growing up, I agree with Calvin:

Late to the party. Everything that I could have said has already been said, from condolences on the loss of a friend and instructor, to compliments to Sammi's level-headedness and maturity in a time of crisis and mourning, to bemoaning the desire of WBC to once again troll America.

All things told, I feel that the best way to handle the trolls is to simply form a human shield between them and the grieving parties, with backs turned. Something like this would not be a normal mission for the Patriot Guard Riders, but given the fact that WBC will be in attendance, getting in contact with the local ride captain might be worth a call, Dave.

The Patriot Guard only attends those events at the expressed wishes of the victim's family. As I am not I can't ask.

It is my extreme pleasure, and possibly sadistic little sense of humor, that Westboro Baptist Church is going to be 3 blocks away from the funeral service itself and will be completely out of sight. Basically, this is where we all do a little victory jig and giggle that their efforts are futile and their hate mongering will have no effect.
Let them stew over that one for a while, shall we?

#131

DarkAudit

I'd suggest a mass point and laugh at the WBC, but that would mean acknowledging their existence.

That discussion could also take on a very Nietzschian direction as well.
I didn't see that until today, but indeed it could.
"Let us beware of saying that death is the opposite of life. The living being is only a species of the dead, and a very rare species. " - Nietzsche
And only one of many.

Sadly, this shooting got tossed off the front pages by another shooting in AZ - this time a congresswoman and a Federal judge.

Sometimes I wonder if the increase in this sort of crap comes from the general feeling of hope for the future by the populace of a country. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to do an accurate study about this.

Triple post?

And if the WBC was there - and it was rumored that they were - nobody saw them, they got nothing in the paper, nothing on the news and NO counter-protesters. Let them stand in the snow 3 blocks away with their signs of hate. Nobody cared.
