so we should assume some sort of flight or grappling hook system will be coming into play? i mean you could built bridges but thats nuts!
I would assume nothing. Get ready for a lot of walking backwards, face down, holding shift and clicking. heh.

Yeah, I was thinking in regards to single player... still haven't wrapped my brain around nether portals going to actually work in smp. I guess since we're running Worldguard now, the potential damage from ghasts crossing over into the real world is greatly diminished, as the "explosion" part of a ghast fireball always barely seemed to ding cobblestone, and now the fire component is limited to being unable to spread.
 
I did some digging out of curiosity, and found a bit on where he briefly talked about this particular project:

To begin with, I Imagined what I wanted in my head. Believe me or not, but that took me 3 entire days... Including where/how to begin with. I made a base (see here, scroll down for the screen : http://www.mcschematics.com/index.php?topic=1455.0 ).
And from this point on, I just build out of my imagination, no plans/blueprints.

The tools I used were, as in my other projects, MCEdit and INVedit + Zombe's mod pack for the flying mod, builder mod and to set time as I want.


He also mentions that it took him three weeks to finish the whole thing, and in another post says he worked 14-16 hours per day on the project.

Tough to say how much is done manually (in the video comments he mentions he mostly uses MCEdit at the outset, but then mostly works by hand), but it's the imaginative design that really makes it something special IMO.

Oh, and BTW drifter, I sure hope some upcoming update doesn't inadvertently break worldguard or anything. Those fires in the nose of your flying fortress dragon ship would probably burn the whole thing down... or crash the server with that much flaming cloth.
 
Thanks for the heads up. I actually surrounded the fire with cobblestone just in case... although I ended up putting out the fires because it was too high up to be noticeable anyway

Probably for the best. The top was open, presumably to let the smoke through, and I can attest from having to rebuild the inn in Gasbandia TWICE that fire has absolutely no trouble jumping as many as 2 meters of cobblestone.

In many of these videos players seem to be using a no-clip fly mod. Why are we not using this?

Magic carpet while nice is unwieldy and lags horribly at times. Not to mention makes working by water a pain.

Wouldn't a fly mod put less stress on the server do to not having to add/delete blocks whenever anyone moves?

Flying is a client mod, not a server mod. The server only has to have a command that "allows" flying to take place (I had to turn it on because even magic carpet was triggering it), but it's up to you to find a client flying mod you can trust to not steal your login info.

Also, block manipulation is pretty much effortless for the server. What causes major server number crunching is usually the exploration/generation of new territory, the detonation of TNT, or the simulation of monsters (and that second one is mostly bad code, I think).

Of course, since it's all java anyway, it's not like ANYTHING is particularly efficient, here.

Found a modpack I think to be reasonably reliable that purports to let you fly in both single and multiplayer -

Zombe's Mod Pack

Bear in mind using these mods requires you to replace class files in the minecraft.jar file in your %appdata%/.minecraft/bin folder.

After some thought, I went ahead and enabled all the craftbook commands. I know drifter at least had requested this sometime last year, and I was squeamish because I worried about people making things like lava pit traps and such to trap other unwary players. All I can say is I HOPE we're mature enough not to do that. If not, well, worldguard's recording everything, so if I can be arsed, I can figure out who the assneck is. So anyway, everybody should now have the ability to create toggle-able bridges, doors, and areas. Please reference the craftbook wiki for more details.

I didn't set up any of that. Cauldrons are "enabled" but the addon doesn't come with any recipes. If you guys can think up some recipes, post em and I'll copypasta them into the config file.

I looked into optimizing the network traffic, but 80-90% is pure terrain data. We're going to have to invent better compression.
Somebody with a twitter account let Notch know he could eliminate re-sending chunks that haven't changed by caching map data client side and then just comparing checksum data on each chunk.

Minecraft Beta 1.6 is getting release later this week.

Wooden half-blocks will still be nonflammable, yes?
If they are now, I see no mention being made of making it not so... mister "I'm going to boobytrap the entrance to driftopia so GasBandit can't go see how I redesigned my minecart stations."
