Good question... I like the sound of some of these changes. Maybe he's implementing them as a different game mode or using them to test the waters on new approaches?

Hopefully he starts working out the multiplayer bugs... I can't wait to do survival mode with a few buddies... the silliness will be epic.

I don't see the "torches go out" thing going over well with the community, considering Lanterns are probably going to use precious iron to make.

I would love to have the option to have torches that go out or stay on infinitely... it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm playing a fun survival game with a buddy... it would be funny as hell to have torches go out (they can apparently be relighted with the flint and steel)... but if I'm just doing a sandbox mode by myself I probably would rather they stay on.

Having to relight them is also a lot better than having the torch become spent.

I've started a multiplayer server internally, for the little woman and I to collaborate.

It's already an interesting experience. Even though it's buggy as all hell it's still lots of fun... and already has been the source of one argument.

I just wish mine carts worked on multiplayer. Those things are my bread and butter in this game. But you can't even get in a mine cart currently in multiplayer, and if you try to break one down, it causes a memory leak in the server.

Buckets don't work either, but you can work around that.

The game is too easy right now. A lot of casual players will complain, but balancing a game is hard, and bumps along the way are to be expected. Besides, it's in alpha and costs all of $13.50.

It's a good price for americans right now with each euro only costing $1.37. The rate is going up, though, so the game is likely only to get more expensive leading up to christmas, and, of course, he's going to jack up the price when he goes into beta.

Yeah, torches going out is not popular in my house right now, but with the two of us mining, I've already got over 500 iron I've got nothing better to do with (because there's no point to building mine carts/track yet).

Ok, I finally got it (probably shouldn't have). Turns out the paypal conversion is closer to $1.40, so it cost just under $14. Oh well, see you all in building block land...

It's been officially confirmed that any torches already placed before the update will be changed to lanterns automatically, and only torches placed AFTER the update will burn out. So those of us who have placed hundreds upon hundreds of torches will not find our entire worlds plunged into darkness suddenly after the update.

I'm having fun playing this game, but I just got done watching all of X's videos, and I am afraid that the game will become stale for me very soon. I want to love it forever, though.

I actually tried to limit myself at the beginning-- like making myself not go too deep, etc.

But within the first few hours of playing, I struck a cave system that took me about 6 hours to explore fully, with no digging on my end, and it was FULL of resources. I will never want for coal or flint again.

I found what I call a "pirate alcove" that I started playing around in, and I didn't think I was going too deep (and I was going diagonally), but before too long I hit bedrock. But before reaching that, about halfway up my "staircase" I heard zombies, so started searching, and found a really awesome cave system, which eventually gave me about 11 diamond.

So I'm already pretty well into things. Sigh.

Man, I really dislike this torch thing, specially because I can't find any iron. I had trouble finding coal, even if now I've got plenty, but I'm basically having fun building a road from my spawning point to my mine, and that involves lots of torches and almost no mining.

Helpful hint: when sneaking (hold down Shift), you can go past any edges you're on and you generally won't fall off*. This information would have saved me a ton of time and trouble had I known of it sooner.

*If you go into inventory while sneaking, you instantly stand up. When you go back out from inventory, if you were on the outermost edge, you will fall.
Also, if you are dumb enough to dig under the edge you are sneaking on (e.g. me), you will fall to your probable death.

I keep hearing about people who think the game is too hard, or at least creepers. Are you guys having any problems? I'm playing on normal mode, and while I've run into my fair share of monsters, none of them have come close to kill me. I've been exploded at by 3 creepers the entire game and I've lived through each one, somehow. The first time I dove down a waterfall to escape-- he still exploded as I jumped, taking me to one heart, and I landed in the water below. Shit was awesome.

But yeah, I'm not having any huge problems. I haven't even had any spiders or creepers jump down from the top of my house or anything.

The "game" itself it ridiculously easy at the moment... are there really people complaining about it being hard?

As for the torches... meh, I'll just build lanterns.

As an admission of guilt, I've started using a world mapper to find resources. I don't have time to mine forever. It's still very time consuming, but better.

What is really needed is an in-game metal detector that works like the compass. Maybe use some diamond and redstone, but it always points to the nearest deposit of iron, redstone, or diamond...

I never had problems with creepers killing me (though they have damaged my structures), it's the times I dig into a cave that has 3 skeletons in it all shooting at me at once. THAT kills me.

I've only found 4 diamonds so far, and I've explored a lot of caves.

As for getting bored of it, don't forget that mining is only half the game. The other half is BUILDING. You mine to get the resources to build your world to be what you want it to be. Think of it as a gigantic Lego set that you have to dig up your own bricks in.

For instance, I found coastline, so I built a lighthouse there, a completely furnished 12 story tower with a lava-powered super-lamp taking up the entire 12th story.

I have been killed plenty of times. It doesn't help that I set up my first base (wich I recently called "The paramecium station") in a place that spawns regularly four or five creepers, a few spiders and some zombies. My character was miserable for a long time, dying again and again, until I started building on the beach. Now I have a nice system of beachhouses and a long tunnel that connects the beach with The Paramecium. There's still lots of monsters outside it, but I don't need to go there anymore!
I still do, though, because my goal is to finally "civilize" the zone around my base, flattening the terraing, building roads, lights, parks, farms and monuments.

Started a new map last night (after I had an issue with zombies and lava that resulted in all my diamond being lost in the previous map I was playing). ten steps from my spawn point, I found iron in a small, shallow cave. I literely found Iron before coal. I found a deeper cave and I'm in the process of digging it out at the moment (more iron, some coal). I haven't found any large sources of water yet (which is supprising, as typically I spawn on a beach). I also found some ice covered ponds and snow covered hills, but it is not activly snowing in my map.

Someone asked me privately what I did to map the world, but there are many other tools (mods, different texture maps, etc) for the game that I thought I'd simply link to the page I was looking at: Programs and Editors - Minepedia - The Minecraft Wiki! I use Minecraft Xray ( Minecraft X-Ray 2.7 [release] [+src] [+video] - Minecraft Forum - Official Minecraft Forums ) to look around the world. It is relatively simple and straightforward, and has a way to highlight individual resources. By the time I downloaded it I had already been to the bottom of the world, so I used it to get a general idea of where I should aim my lateral shafts to get resources. I'm rationalizing it by telling myself that I'm merely an advanced caveman, with the 20th century underground research tools modern mining operations use today. I already spent way too much time making huge underground caverns just to find a few resources, and that's time I'm just not interested in continuing to spend, so this makes it a bit more fun without removing all the grinding. I still think that an in-game metal detector should be available. Maybe 4 diamond, 4 redstone, and one glass so it's not something you get right out the gate, but once you've put in a bit of work to make it, it would be a tremendous help.

I gave in and bought it today. Only played for an hour, but I've got some nice caves near me. I've found iron and a fair amount of coal so far (I'm placing torches like they're going out of style.) but I haven't found anything beyond that yet, not that I dug very deep in just over an hour.

Is there anything to do with wool yet?
EDIT: Nevermind, I checked the wiki. It's a cloth block, not wool, and I can make paintings with it.
EDIT 2: Thanks Allen

I got my friend into this, and his goal is to claim his whole continent. I figured he just meant building shit, but no, he intends to keep it safe. I asked him to elaborate so he pulled up his map and showed me his area. First of all, he has a GIGANTIC castle that can be seen for miles around, and he has torches EVERYWHERE. At night he just goes and expands some each day, placing a torch wherever there's darkness. It's not a grid system or anything, but seriously, he climbed onto a hill to give me a better view, and in the huge area we could see, there was only one zombie. (To contrast, I would estimate you would normally see about 6-7 enemies in that area in darkness on Normal.)

If you could go to space in this game, you would be able to see his place like a lite-brite.

I feel intimidated by this game because I want to build so many cool things, but don't feel like I'm good at it, so I feel like I'm wasting potential. I went out on adventure to find a new cool place, and I found an area with 4 really neat things close enough by:

1) Bigass waterfall
2) Huge mountain crag that juts out in three areas-- one of them has the waterfall mentioned (I've started building a house here)
3) This upward pillar of earth; I've already begun digging through it and I've pretty much made it hollow and created a tiny "out-and-about" base.
4) Magma pouring out of a moutain on the surface. I know it's got a source block like right on top or something and doesn't actually originate from anywhere really awesome, but it still looks neat and I want to explore that area.

I've gotten bolder in hunting creepers, because I want enought TNT to blow up the world.

Some pictures of the new world I started earlier in the week - odd thing is it's a snow world, and when I created it in single player it was actively snowing and overcast... but when I ported it to my multiplayer server it got clear and snow stopped falling (but snow still accumulates on the ground)

Also, since it's a multiplayer server, night monsters are a non-issue.

We've built a house inside a mountain we found. I think it looks pretty nice

The approach (with extremely tall fire beacon for navigation)

Front yard, with the snow kept back by torches

First floor "kitchen" and living room

2nd floor 1

2nd floor 2

3rd floor, with some of my "art" taking up most of the main area

The lava "art" in the master bedroom

The view of the grotto from the master bedroom at night

On the roof, I made a geothermal hot tub

Oh, and here's that lighthouse I was talking about earlier - as with my previous, single player tower, it's got areas for tree and wheat growth, but I gave each their own level to do so.

Oh yeah, and I forgot one other thing... our next project is building a really big castle. We've just barely gotten started. Even clearing/levelling the land has been a huge undertaking.

Wow... my best castle looks like a sloppy hovel compared to your creation...
Which, the castle, or the mountain home? The castle's barely started, it really is epically huge in undertaking. What you see has taken us two days.

If you mean the interior of the mountain home, the credit there is mostly to the little woman. It was interesting comparing her first single player world to mine... I came to realize I built "houses" that were really tiny, spartan, utilitarian workshop outposts with scenic overlooks and defensive battlements. SHE built homes. Spacious, decorated, color-and-texture coordinated homes... that were not particularly defensible or utilitarian. So we started collaborating and I think it worked. Of course, it being a multiplayer server, and health and monsters not being a factor there, home defense has fallen by the wayside in favor of aesthetics.

Still, I wish like hell mine carts worked in multiplayer. It takes forever to get around on foot, even with elevated walkways. I've got empty bays in all my structures (including, in the mountain home, an entire 4th floor "hangar bay" area that I didn't take pictures of, because it's basically an empty room with an opening in the cliff face) for rail depots, against the day if/when carts DO work on multiplayer... and I'm praying that when that day comes, the cart boosting mechanic (ok, BUG) will be left in effect.

I just lost like 3 hours of mining, ugh. I was on my way up to store all my stuff (forgot to bring wood) and a zombie dropped down on me and killed me almost instantly. I'm SOMEWHERE in a giant cave system. I don't know how long your items last, but I could potentially find them again if I had like 15 minutes.

Egh.. I lost like 6 diamond, which doesn't bother me too much, but I found so much gold and iron!! Bagh!

Edit: Hah! Found them! Luckily I was almost at the cave entrance when I died (which I didn't realize at the time) but it still took a few minutes to get there. (I started a second base a little ways away for the fun of it.)

The only reason I was able to get there so quickly was because I built a (completely unrealistic) bridge of dirt that spans over my many hills. More so I don't get lost than anything.

I haven't built anything amazing like you guys. I'm trying to pace myself, so my base is still a shitty "starter base" where I probably have the resources to make it look awesome.

I think my first "big" project will be a huge pirate ship.
