Fuuuuuuuuuck. Stupid, crappy university. I've inquired about my application four different times. Four times I've been ignored. No call, no email back. I'm about to do this online at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, because Lafayette can kiss my broad ass. You are all a bunch of apathetic, unhelpful, mediocre knobheads, and I hate dealing with you. HATE. It's insulting that I need validation from you to get more money.

PROTIP for people looking to hire: if you've had a vacancy for over a year, and someone expresses interest and you say you'll send them docuementation. DO IT. Promptly.
Also: If someone sends you their application, comfirm receipt dammit!
I realize it's a week before Christmas, and December is insane in this industry, and that there is a lot of paperwork and committees involved, but seriously people. Get it together!

Lack of receipt confirmation is in my top 5 pet-peeves for job application. I hate it when applying to a job feels like gathering a bunch of papers then throwing them off a cliff, praying to the wind.

I've been trying to communicate with the university for 3 weeks about why my application hasn't gone through. Today they email me and tell me my letters of recommendation are too old and I need new ones. Truth is I could probably get them all in on time, but I'm so exhausted with dealing with them that I'm going to talk to my boss about doing an online program instead. I'll start fresh in the fall.
Good god, I hate that kind of thing.

If they want me in charge of something, they should respect my decisions. Oh well.. I'm making toffee as a gift for our secretaries and facility mangers, and that is cheering me up. 
Mostly C's this semester. It's passing and my financial aid or loan status isn't in any danger, but it's still not great and I feel bad about it. My transition from a small local college to a big time university has not been a smooth one. All I can do is take it as motivation to do better and less procrastinationy next semester.
At least I was smarter about next semester and did not schedule to have morning classes the day after I also had late night classes. That was just a dumb move.

I don't know whether to say "Don't jinx it" or "those are two things I'd trade for one particular thing to have not happened this year."
Four frelling hours of going from store to store just to get this science kit that my son wants for Christmas since it's too late to order anything online without doubling or tripling the cost in shipping to get it here on time.
Can't ever do anything halfway, can you?

It did last a good 6 years. Still was keeping up pretty well with modern games. Ah well. I think going forward I'll not be spending 500+ bucks on a video card any more. Technology is moving too fast. A $150 dollar card now has 5 times the benchmark score. So I'll end up spending the same amount over the long haul but enjoying better performance on a bi-yearly basis.

A friend pointed out to me that since 2007, there's been a non-trivial architecture change (PCIe 2.0 to 3.0). My current motherboard is only 2.0, which means the new cards today won't work on it. So. New motherboard is required. Which means new RAM, new processor...
Basically new entire computer.
I guess I must have inundated the environs with waves of "crestfallen" radiation. I probably wouldn't be able to budget an entire new PC for months. So my friend then surprises me by e-mailing me a copy of the invoice for the PC he's just bought me for christmas. I'm glad he wasn't there in person because I broke down sobbing like an infant. Nobody's ever done anything like that for me before.

They will work, but they will downclock to PCIe 2.x speeds. It should be no different than plugging a USB 3 device into a USB 2 port...you will get slower communication, but otherwise no huge difference.
So long as everyone follows the spec the way they are supposed to, the card and board will negotiate a common protocol and move on. My buddy is using a Radeon 6950 which is PCIe Rev. 2.1 in his 2006 DFI motherboard which only has PCIe Rev. 1.0 slots (though they are both at a full 16x, which is why that board was chosen). The only other issue you may hit is whether the slot is supposed to provide extra power instead of using those 6-/8-pin PEG connectors, which IS a pretty significant difference between revisions.
The math is pretty easy. The speed of PCIe 1.0 16x = the speed of PCIe 2.x @ 8x, which equals the speed of PCIe 3.0 @ 4x. And since most games right now can't even saturate a PCIe 2.x 8x bus (or else why would you be able to SLI/Xfire them?), it's unlikely you'll notice the difference if you want to get a decent v3 card right now and build the rest of the computer around it a little at a time.
