[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

Even if it's good advice? What if they have a unique perspective or experience that might prove helpful to you?
Okay I might have typed it wrong so let me rephrase. I hate it when college freshmen give me smug advice. The kind of advice where they aren't actually trying to help but merely trying to say they are more intelligent than you. The kind-of advice where after they are done giving advice they give a damn smug smile. In-fact, I hate smug advice in general! I hate it when people clearly don't care about helping you and give you advice only to make themselves look better. Its rude dammit!

Sorry if I sounded like generic Senior there.

Well, if you were smart you would listen to what they have to say.

Palming all the faces...

Since the end of April, at least four channels on the hotel tv system were on the blink. Showing either the wrong channel or a static slide. Maintenance kept saying it was "the owner's problem" to fix. The owner was aware of the problem, but never followed up.

Fast forward to tonight. Maintenance guys are no longer employed here, and their locking down of the upstairs maintenance corridor is no longer in effect (in two years, I had never been in that passageway). It took me all of 10 seconds to diagnose and fix the problem. Each channel has a separate satellite tuner. The channels that were down were TUNED TO THE WRONG CHANNEL.

Sigh.

That is spectacular. Just... amazingly awesomely amusing. Sucks that it took that long to figure the issue out, and was only made possible in the end by the fact that the maintenance guys are gone and their maintenance corridor open to hotel staff; but still, amazing. It's the kind of thing I expect around here, when CorpNet goes down, or when we can't get reporting cubes to update properly.

I've been working on compiling data for a massive new report that my boss wants for the past... almost 6 hours now, pulling from the three sources I was given, with the goal (from my boss) being to reproduce a report that we have for one of our services for this other service we're attempting to get reports up for. Unfortunately, as it turns out, those 3 sources are... not sufficient. And they knew that. Two months ago.

20+ years is a pretty good lifespan for an A.C. unit, right? Been chilling the shit out of a townhouse with little to no complaints in that time. It needs to be replaced now that's just logical.

I'm never going to come out ahead sweet fucking hell.

Company:

"Hello,
Thank you for your interest and submission for the Creative role with XXXXXX
Are you available for an interview next Tuesday at 2 pm?"
Me, same day:
Hi XXXX,
Tuesday at 2pm works fine for me. I just need the address and I'll be there. Thanks for the quick reply. I look forward to the meeting.
.......No reply

Two days later I look up the company online, and find only one address listed on google maps and the same address listed on their website.
Me:
Hi XXXX,
I just wanted to confirm our meeting and that I have the right address. Tuesday Sept 4th at 2:00pm, XXXX XXXXX st, Toronto ste XXX Is this the correct address? I look forward to speaking with you. Thank you
...again, no reply

Today, I go to the only location listed, am a solid ten minutes early for my interview, and the receptionist tells me she didn't know about an interview today, the guy who contacted me is at their other location today and he didn't know about an interview, and she gives me a toll free number for that location to contact him.

I call that number, and it's disconnected.

Screw it, I'm out.

Fucking stupid-ass cousins. "Facebook is full of half-naked sluts. This is why I won't let my son have a facebook page." Oh, but you let him have a smartphone that's better than yours because he whined for it? And he locked it so you can't get in. You are not smart or proactive.

I know a lot of little kids have phones these days, but I will never ever ever understand why a little kid needs to have a tiny computer hanging out of their pocket while they are running around crazy. Makes no sense to me at all... especially when you raise them to treat them like toys. Don't pacify your goddamn toddler by letting him put your phone in his mouth and play with it! Jesus... I didn't have a phone til I was 17, so it's weird for me I guess... but it just bums me out. Families having dinner, parents trying to talk to their kids, but they can't, because they can't bear to tear the little brat away from their Angry Birds.

I just want to add that I know there are a lot of parents here, and I don't know what you give your kids, and either way I am not trying to talk shit about anyone... besides these two people I'm related to. Ultimately the problem isn't the item itself, it's the education. If a kid isn't brought up to respect something (and not to get a shiny new one every time they break it) then they're gonna grow up shitty.

On the topic of Angry Birds I have nothing but the utmost jealousy. Not hatred, jealousy. Because the guy who made it clearly didn't put any real effort into it and is now a millionaire. That is every lazy artist's dream! Simple ideas are the basis of a capitalistic venture.

Lol, I love that you zeroed in on the Angry Birds portion of that ridiculous rant. :p I gotta admit that, while typing it, I was thinking about how I hadn't played in a while.

...okay I am not going to lie about that. That is a brilliant idea. Role-reversal, straight up!

Also who else is glad that the trend of bad Angry birds sketches is done and over with? Dear lord, I wasn't sure if it was parody or product placement at times.

I freaking hate it when people who are younger than me give me advice when I don't ask for it. What is it about college freshmen that makes them think they're smarter than everyone?
How the fuck you think *I* feel?!?[DOUBLEPOST=1346812901][/DOUBLEPOST]So my real minor rant of the day.

I get a bill in the mail today from when I got my physical. I didn't think I should have to pay anything because it was a wellness visit and I paid my copay. I open it up and it says I owe $4.33 because one of the procedures is paid at 80% (an ECG) and this is the 20% that insurance didn't cover (it was not only discounted but I had a credit. $4.33 is NOT 20% of a full ECG charge!!).

Anyway, I looked at the rest of the bill and saw a few things that floored me. Even though I didn't have to pay I think I'm going to give my insurance company a call. I didn't get some of the things they billed for and I seriously doubt a guy named Dave needs to be charged $27 for a pregnancy test...

This little infographic is making it's rounds on Tumblr.

“Men should be offended when someone claims that women should prevent rape by not wearing certain things or not going certain places or not acting in a certain way. That line of thinking presumes that you are incapable of control. That you are so base and uncivilized that it takes extraordinary effort for you to walk down the street without raping someone. That you require a certain dress code be maintained, that certain behaviors be employed so that maybe today, just maybe, you won’t rape someone.
It presumes that your natural state is rapist.”
An interesting take on the subject, but kind of at odds with how many of the same people reblogging this also reblog posts about how women view every strange man as a potential rapist.

What really gets me is some of the tags being added, like this set:
"you don't blame the robbery victim for having money do you?, well maybe if they'd just been visibly broke they wouldn't have been robbed, its their own fault for being able to support themselves, which is an incredibly imperfect metaphor, but makes just as little sense as blaming rape victims,"

This is where I run into problems with the issue. I don't agree with blaming victims, but telling people that certain behaviors are more risky is not blaming the victim. Take a look at this travel site from the UK government. It's about staying safe while abroad, specifically dealing with money. Some of the advice:
  • don’t carry more money than you need for the day/evening
  • if you need to carry a lot of cash ask your partner or friend to carry some for you
  • keep a small amount of cash in your wallet and the rest in a secure money belt or inside pocket
  • if you have several credit/debit cards, only take one out with you
  • leave your cash, cards and travellers’ cheques in a hotel safe – check it is secure
  • don't pass on any personal (e.g bank) details unless you are confident the request is genuine as financial scams are becoming increasingly common worldwide.
Yes, people do give advice on how to avoid being a robbery victim. If I look I'm sure I can find advice on how to make it look like you're still at home while on vacation so your house will be less likely to be robbed, how to install new locks, how to install a safe and many other things that are done to prevent robbery. Around the apartments I live in there are lots of signs saying "Lock your doors, take your belongings, don't leave valuables in plan sight." or something like that. If someone left their iPod sitting on the seat of an unlocked car in a mall parking lot, you can damn well bet that someone would tell them it's their own damn fault for leaving it that way. They'd be wrong to blame the victim, the thief is still the one at fault, and no one asks to be robbed (except for insurance fraud), but that doesn't make the advice to not leave valuables in unlocked cars any less prudent and valuable.

Oh, the shit-storm that would ensue if I were to post this response on Tumblr.

The disconnect is basically this:

For the sake of argument, we'll say dressing modestly reduces the likelihood of rape just as hiding your valuables reduces the odds they'll be stolen. This addresses the problem of a rape and a theft. And I don't disagree with minimising risk. But...

The problem of rapists and thieves, remains. When they ask that men be offended, that the implication is that men are naturally rapists: I don't really disagree. Maybe they're being extreme, but the point they want to say (I think) is that a cultural change is needed to solve this mentality. In "my" world, the one I'd like to live in, you can wear whatever you want and have a good time and not worry about it, and you can carelessly leave your cellphone on the table at the bar and still find it there when you get back from the washroom.

Absolutely there is something to be said for prudence, but there is much more to be said for trying to be better and trusting others to want to be better, too. If fear of a few wicked opportunists prevents us from doing things, or makes us feel guilty for innocent things like clothing or whether or not we hit the lock button on our car, then we are in real trouble.

TL;DR: Both positions are right, aimed at solving different parts of the same problem. I lean more toward the position that you wear whatever you want and leave your shit wherever you like, because that's the society I want to have.

Before this happens again, I'd like us to end the rape discussion, please.
I don't know. We're on page 73, it might be time for this thread to finally descend into the pyre of rape and lock-dom.

FWIW, I will be happy to engage in any mature discussion about rape. I will even be happy to engage in immature discussion about rape, though I believe my insistence on being civil about the topic will make it less amusing for the froth-mouthers and the lulzies.

Well since were on the discussion, is rape worse than murder? This has bothered me for years. On the one hand murder robs a person of life, but on the other hand rape gives a person the worst memory ever that would take years of therapy to get rid of. Bothered me for years.

is rape worse than murder?
It depends on who you ask. Some people value life itself above the quality of said life. For these people, murder would be unquestionably worse. Others (like you suggest) would be haunted by the trauma, and for them perhaps murder would be less objectionable. It all hinges on every individual's value system.

--Patrick

Very true PatrThom, I guess ultimately it is based on perspective. Both can be either one be more worse, or both being just as worse. Depends on the people.

We engaged in the rape vs murder discussion in the last rape discussion.
Well I guess we engaged it again.

Anyone else frickin' annoyed when people park outside their drive-ways...when there is clearly enough room in their drive-way. I don't care if its easier to drive out it is a damn hazard.

You mean like, most of their car is in the driveway, but they've got either the front or the ass end hangin' out on the sidewalk or in the road, or when they park on the street in front of their house? Cuz one's just plain annoying and the other is a citation worthy offense in some places.

Parked on the street in front of there house. And it is legal in where I live, but I wish it freakin wasn't because its a damn hazard! What if there's something in the road that causes my tires to pop and I hit the car? And even so it makes the damn street really cramped to drive in. You'd think since there are a lot of accidents on this road they'd put up stricter parking laws but nooooooooooo, my town is usually too busy engulfed in whatever event main-street is having. And I can't complain to city council since I don't technically live there, but its still annoying since I need this freakin' road to do numerous errands.

It's against bylaws to do it overnight in Waterloo but not in Kitchener, which is a little strange. Even in Waterloo, you can fill out a form up to 10 times annually per household to park a car on the street overnight.

Yeah... I'm with you on narrow streets needing better parking situations, but honestly, if it's a residential neighborhood, what did you expect really? Also, by this logic:

Parked on the street in front of there house. And it is legal in where I live, but I wish it freakin wasn't because its a damn hazard! What if there's something in the road that causes my tires to pop and I hit the car?
Everything that could possibly be near your car is a hazard. What if you're driving on the freeway and your tire pops and you hit a jersey barrier? Are jersey barriers hazards? What about fire hydrants? Stop signs? Mail boxes (the big ones for the postal service, not individual households')? Garbage cans? Curbs? I could continue, but I'm sure by now you get my point. Like I said, I do agree with you on narrow streets. Lord knows that in the Seattle area there are more than enough streets that can't handle two-way traffic, because there's only enough room for one car down the middle at a time due to parking cars on both sides; but it's just the price of living in a city.

stienman That would be okay but the people who park outside their drive-ways AREN'T guests. They just park there all the time and it makes the street even more narrow than it all-ready is. And these people have plenty of room in there damn drive-ways! Most of them could fit a whole car in there with-out buggin the side-walk! And yet they don't! Also why should I move? Isn't that a little extreme? I just want them to park in their drive-way. And like I'll try making a complaint again, but like I said I don't legally live there. My house is actually right on the border, me living in a municipality and all.

Gared Okay the road hazard thing is based on my paranoia since its happened to me like twice. It was horrifying. But while this road is a residential one, its a 35 mile road. That is plenty fast enough for accident territory. I have no idea why they make a residential road 35 miles but it is. And I'll agree on the road-hazards thing but trash-cans in the road still annoys me. Those belong on a lawn, or side-walk. Because sometimes the trash-guys don't give a shit and throw those things on the street and they will roll in the middle of the damn road and its just irksome! A minor peeve, but a peeve none the less.

Bottom line, be glad this road isn't part of your errand commute like it is mine.

Chome, as awesome as it is for me in my windows partition, really does not like to stay stable under Linux. Had to switch back to Firefox, which seems to work awesomely in Ubuntu but always gives me freezes and hang-ups in windows.
