[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

I just found out I’ll have to relocate my internal suspension room to another, smaller room in the building because it would make things a little easier to cover lunch detentions, too. While I get the logic, it sucks. I’ve had a full-size classroom with great ventilation, windows, and cabinets and really would only have to have one or two kids there at a time on days I had lunch detention. I also had a great, quiet place to eat my own lunch. It was safe for me to unmask. That’s going to be gone. The new room has ventilation, but no windows at all. It also has cabinets, but they’re all locked. I just sent an email to admin asking about getting the key or just getting them unlocked, but I have a strong feeling, going by historical precedent, that the key will be long gone. That’ll make my job harder.

One of the best parts of my current room is that nobody goes in it save me, the janitors, or an occasional sub covering internal for me. I have snacks and desk toys and I even have a supply of Dum Dum pops for some subbing days. The kids all know I have this stuff. One of the BIG downsides for this new arrangement is that the new room will be used for lunch detention regardless of whether or not I’m there to cover it. (days I’m subbing classes) That means the lunch monitors would watch the room, and all they do is peek in once and awhile. Those kids, especially the grades 7 and 8, which are generally horrible for whatever reason, would ransack my room as soon as no adult was watching them. My snacks? Gone. My lollipops? Gone. My desk bots? Gone. I could always ask for a file cabinet if the regular cabinets have no key - one I can lock, but if all that fails, then I’d have to either get rid of it all or buy something to secure it in myself.

Maybe dumb question, not sure on your end of things. If the key has been lost, why not get a locksmith to make a new key? If nobody can use the cabinets because of them being locked they are of no use to anyone.

Update: The key has been located, but all the cabinets are being used for the National Honor Society. All of them. The advisor is going to clear out a few, but that won’t be for awhile, as the school is going through the accreditation renewal process and that teacher is involved in some important meetings.
