Movie News & Miscellany

Well, Cartoon Brew wants to look into it more and in the twitter replies the film's editor doubles down on the fuck you animators attitude.

I feel its also worth noting that by 1995's (year Toy Story came out) standards 19 million is more like a little over 12 million, and honestly way too cheap for a film with generally GOOD CGI. I mean yeah its no Toy Story 3, but the animation crew clearly put effort into it.

Also by today's standards, Toy Story's budget of 30 million is more like a little over 47 million, and arguably Sausage Party looks cleaner in some areas so they clearly short-changed some people.

I'm glad they made him different from the first Pennywise, because I think Tim Curry left an indelible impression with his version (even if feelings about the first film over-all are mixed. I liked it.) The one thing I will say is this Pennywise looks out-and-out sinister, while Curry's could sneak up on you. He looked like a usual, friendly* clown and used his performance to make him truly frightening. Tim Curry always sets the bar high, even if the rest of the production is lack-luster.

*YMMV if you're freaked out by clowns in general.

Yeah, it's really silly to watch now, but no one can deny how absolutely terrifying Tim Curry could be without the extra teeth and stuff he started showing in the miniseries.

This fucking face:

I guess I kind of need to see the new Pennywise in action. Because I totally agree, the way Curry's version went slightly-creepy-but-innocuous-and-silly to full-blown nightmare fuel on the dime is what actually made him scary.

Because if we're just going full always-scary clown, American Horror Story is pretty tough to beat.

I'm going to assume they're showing us full-scary clown to get our attention, but Pennywise needs to be non-threatening at some points. He has to be able to lure kids near him in order to strike, and I have a hard time believing anyone would want to go near something looking like Skarsgard's photo.

Speaking as someone who holds that book in high regard--I approve. I think the face will tone down for scenes and then look like this when he's not fucking around anymore. I love the costume; Pennywise has been screwing with humans for as long as they've been in that part of Maine, and pretty much the moment he understood what a human imagination was, the clown took shape.

I really wish they weren't splitting this into a past movie and a present movie. That didn't work for the first try and I'm anxious it won't work for this attempt, because it carries the kids stuff to its height, and then we drop to the adults and have to build all the way up again. The adult stuff is where the story ends, but the kids stuff is where the stakes feel strongest and the danger is most intense, which is why the book tells the two at the same time.

In all, I'd prefer they make a good movie over being faithful to the book. There are so many scenes in the original movie that only happen because they happened in the book and are lifted literally, without any of the emotion or context that necessitates them in the book. I'm looking at you, climax and end of the movie. Without establishing why Pennywise appears as a giant monster spider, there's no reason to make him appear as a giant monster spider. Or just throwing around the word "deadlights" like it means something without actually establishing what that is.

If you're going to cut out all the Lovecraftian cosmic horror elements of the story, that's fine--it can just be a clown demon or whatever the filmmakers want and be a good movie. But don't leave all the trappings and mentioning of the cosmic horror stuff in the script then; that's just sloppy.

Yeah I made this same point on Reddit. I don't like the new Pennywise because he's not believable as a friendly clown. He has to start that way, or why bother making him a clown?

Like someone else said, this is probably full-on creepy Pennywise, but the movie will also have a kid-friendly version too.

Yup. :D

EDIT: To be fair, my reply was eclipsed by "How Tim Curry Will Kill You", which is

Bill Skaarsgard can be surprisingly impish and charming as Floki, and he's literally a deranged Viking. I have no doubts he'll be able to pull off "friendly Pennywise" as well as "creepy predator Pennywise"

Pssst, wrong Skarsgard brother! :p

(I hope you're right)

Ben-Hur set to be the biggest flop of the summer.

If not for a reply to an offhand comment I made here a few days ago, I wouldn't have even known this movie was even coming. The article suggests the studio is banking on the overseas market. Who? The Middle East is certainly out.
I have a friend who does movie subtitles for foreign films released in Taiwan. Every time a movie she worked on comes out, she'll post about it on Facebook, along with some comments about how she felt about the film. Usually my reaction is, "Hey you worked on that movie? That's cool, I was already looking forward to seeing it, and now I want to see it even more." Off the top of my head, she's worked on 10 Cloverfield Lane, the reboot Star Trek trilogy, World War Z, etc.

Point is, by the time she posts about her subtitling the film, I've always heard about the movie already. Not this time though. She posted that she did the subtitles for Ben Hur, and I was all like, "Wait what? There's a Ben Hur remake coming out?" There's not been much publicity or word-of-mouth for this movie around these parts.

So, yeah, not so sure about that overseas market either.

Also, my subtitling friend is really hot.

Okay just watched the first episode on Amazon and, as I long time fan, I liked it. Serafinowicz is great and honestly sounds the way I'd always imagined the Tick when I read the comics. Can't wait for more.

Oh, and Jackie Earl Haley as the Terror is effing perfect.

Just watched the pilot, it's great.

I actually read an interesting theory about the costume. Basically with how busy and washed-out current hero suits can be, Tick's costume reflects that in the way his shiny, slick suit referenced the goofy Batman costumes of the late 90's in Forever/Batman and Robin. The new suit doesn't look great, but it makes sense when put in this light.

Ok, that was pretty good. Two quibbles though.. the suit is still terrible, and when he didn't follow up "I SAY UNTO YOU" with "KNOCK OFF ALL THAT EVIL!" I was crestfallen.

I loved that final speech, where the camera pans and we see he's just shouting this diatribe at nobody in particular. That right there is The Tick.
