Handheld battery operated lanterns. The ones that I've used have two bulbs, one for wide coverage, the other for a more focused beam. My step-father used them for years on the railroad.

It's ice. But it's not very thick ice. The rubber mats are safer for people to walk down to the river on, but when it's flat, I'm confident in my balance to walk without it.

It wasn't quite the "Snowpocalypse" they predicted (the storm swung wide and hit more of Long Island than us), but we still got 8-10" and plenty of fun!
