Nintendo Switch Thread

I have a Wii U. I posted about it probably 7-8 yrs ago. I got it second hand with games and infinity figurines for way cheap because the Switch had come out.

So, I am thinking of trying this again with the Switch.

I would have liked it to be $50 cheaper, but considering inflation and tariffs, it’s probably not too out of line. $80 games might be hard to swallow though. I definitely will be more selective if that’s the new normal.

Weird, the german one didn't show the price. I was really really pleased with the direct otherwise.
I don’t think it was in the direct, but it’s on their site. System only is $450 US and $500 US with a Mario Kart World bundle.

Mario Kart World alone will be $80.

I can’t wait to see pictures of all the coffee tables that are scratched to hell from 4 drunk people frantically running these joycons across the table trying to play Mario party.

I believe it's not a smart move that Nintendo don't offer it as a free download. But in their history Nintendo sold new hardware only twice with a free game. Tetris with the Gameboy and Wii Sports with the Wii. And Wii Sports was only free outside of japan.

Well this just isn't true, at least in the USA.

You are right. I didn't count these bundles. They came later after the hardware launch or you had to pay extra for the sets. Of course regional differences could also happen.

But in truth I couldn't find informations and wrote what I remembered.

The NES came with Super Mario Brothers.

Or the Zapper pack came with SMB and Duck Hunt.

The version that came with the zapper AND the power pad came with SMB, Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet.

Edit oops, Poe beat me to it.

For the NES and SNES the console-only packages were what came later. At launch the SNES came with two controllers and Super Mario World. There was no option to buy just the console with one controller until a couple of years later.

The very first NES set only released in some US test markets in 1985 was actually the super set that included R.O.B. the robot and its included game.

The sad state of gaming journalism is really letting down gamers right now. If there were gaming publications with journalistic standards worth a shit, they'd be doing articles about the history of game prices and game pack-ins, and citing actual sources to do so. They'd be pulling up old newspaper articles from the launch, and quoting old Game Informer articles about the first Nintendo console to not come with a bundled game, and how that shook the industry a the time.

There'd be a lot fewer online arguments about "there were $90 SNES games, not really! I remember paying that much" if some journalist would cite sources about the MSRP of the most expensive SNES games and how much they cost in each region. As it is now, people pull up random scans of old ads that are showing Canadian prices and talking about them as if they're the prices that gamers in the US paid.

Sega's Genesis famously wasn't selling well until they bundled it with Sonic.

Honestly, when I first got my PS5, I was excited to play what was a glorified tech demo and love letter to Playstation history. It was a free game, but even just that "little" 5 hour game was a great experience and a perfect way to showcase what the new system and controller could do. I firmly believe that if you're going to get a system, it should always come with SOMETHING to play when you first start it up. Astro's Playground is the perfect example of that.

It's shame Sony hasn't really capitalized on the controller's potential in other games, but that's a whole other argument.

I don't remember if my Dreamcast came with a game or not - I suspect it didn't. I want to say it came with a demo disk with several "trial" versions or demos of games that were available.

I remember the Sega Saturn came with a disk with demos on it. There was a baseball game that only allowed you to play the home run derby, a racing game with one track, the first level of a platformer where you played as a toy soldier and wielded a key as a sword, I think...

I dont think it came packed with anything at launch, later I think there was a sonic adventure pack in and NFL2K one.

Cranky's Odyssey² system came with Speedway/Spin-out/Cryptologic.
My father's Intellivision came with Las Vegas Blackjack & Poker.
My Intellivison 2 came with BurgerTime.
My NES came with Super Mario Bros.
My SNES came with no game because I bought it refurbished at FuncoLand, but the first game I bought for it was Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
Cranky's does not remember which game his PS1 came with, if any.
My wife's Sega Genesis came with Sonic the Hedgehog.
My wife's N64 came with Super Mario 64.
My PS2 was purchased used, but I had already purchased Shadow of the Colossus for it at least a couple of years prior.
Cranky's PS2 Slim was also purchased used, and I believe I purchased a second copy of Colossus for him as well.
We have had no other gaming consoles.

I saw the the NES Super Set in the early late 80s/ early 90s. That came with four controllers, Super Mario, Tetris and World Cup and later I saw the ads for the Super Nintendo with the Super Gameboy and Super Mario All-Star but I can't remember what the first launch included. The Gameboy I can remember because me and my sister got each one for Christmas. The other consoles were usually second hand or just suddenly there. The Super Nintendo we had and suddenly not any more didn't has Super Mario World. And with the N64 I can't remember how we got it for Christmas. It was just there one day with Mario Kart and Mario 64. The next console after that was the Wii I bought myself.
