[PC Game] Planetside 2

Anyone here going to be playing planetside 2? It's going to be free to buy and free to play also the TR outfit I'm in was filmed by Sony for an ad campaign the first video of which is out now

I've been playing it a LOT recently. In a good outfit with my EvE bros. There is nothing more fun in an FPS than a well executed manuever in that game. Very well made

For me, it's been crash-tastic. Every 15 minutes or so, it locks up and I have to end-task it before it locks the whole machine. Pity, it IS very fun when it's working.

I'm still on XP on my main gaming rig... I'll try the /3gb startup switch I suppose, but I've had bad luck with that in the past. Still, it's an indication of bad memory management on the part of PS2.

A couple of things you could try:

1) Update to windows 7 you caveman!

2) When in game hit Alt + F. This will tell you your frame rate and the bottleneck. Pay attention to it. See if FPS degrades over time and if your bottleneck switches. I thought I had a memory leak problem until I did this and it turned on it was my CPU.

3) "Unpark" your cores. For some reason windows will occasionally dump one of your cores into "Power saver" mode, and this causes problems. I had thought I had done this until someone linked me to this:

http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/...rking-your-cpu-to-get-more-performance.53793/

It's not a PS2 specific issue. In there you will find a link to a program that will Unpark your CPU cores. Like I said, I thought i had turned off power saver until I ran this. Turns out somethig else was reparking them.

Hrm, I'll have to check that parking thing. I do know my 4 cores step down in speed when not under heavy use. I'm pretty sure the bottleneck is not my CPU however. My FPS stays pretty high right until the sudden lockup.

And I know I'll have to upgrade to 7 at some point, but as I said... there's only been like 3 games where it's been an issue, and that's a lot of work to go through for that. And my laptop is windows 7 so most of the time, when something needs 7, I just play it on that.

In all likelihood, it'll take catastrophic hardware failure to get me on to 7 - something that would destroy my XP setup anyway. Next OS reinstall I do is 7. But so long as nothing's wrong with what I've got, I see no reason to go through the hassle when I've got everything else set up how I want it.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if your OS is the problem. If you're using XP 32 that means that you are limited to 3-3.5 GB of memory, including the graphics card (which really means 2-2.5, unless you are using SLI or an X2 card then you're down to 1-1.5). XP 64 increases the memory recognition to 8 GB, but XP 64 generally has some pretty bad stability issues.

As soon as I learned about that I immediately upgraded. The choice between an unstable OS with an 8GB limit and a stable OS with a 2 GB limit (I was using a 4880 X2) isn't really a choice imho. It's more like a Sophie's choice where you want both kids to die.

Edit: Ok wow PS2 is an x86 only game. That's...weird. I think a 64 bit system would still get performance gains though due to OS overhead.

I downloaded this and gave it some play time. I've actually had a lot of fun so far to be honest. The game has run great for me too. I'm suffering more from a "what the hell am I supposed to do" vibe than anything. I'm decent at killing enemy soldiers but I have NO CLUE how to capture anything. So while I'm good at defending... I really don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do otherwise. Lately I've just been deploying at locations that are critically under attack and lay waste to the opposition until we get overrun eventually.

Not to mention it's obvious when you are up against a crew of people playing together with voice communications and strategy. They pretty much just take anything apart that they want to.

I like that there is squad and vicinity voice chat built in, with 2 different push to talk keys.

As for taking objectives, I've found you just kinda... hang out close to them, bf1942 style, and they slowly change to your color.

This is not a game to play solo. The best experience you will ever have is if you are in a good organized platoon. Game really comes into it's own under those conditions.

Yeah, for simpler zones that worked for me... but a good example came when I was defending the center map zone (crown I believe). We were under siege for over two hours before the enemy managed to capture one of the three points (there is an A, B and C location to this zone) and eventually we were reduced to just holding the B one. Eventually though... even though we were still holding B solidly the whole zone converted over to the enemy and we lost our spawn point and were quickly driven out. I have no idea how that happened.

Oh I am sure of this. I realize I'm at a huge disadvantage playing by myself but I've found ways to be useful to the team even without massive coordination. Someday I'd like to play with some organization and support though lol.

It's a tug of war mechanic depending on Influence, the more surronding areas you have the easier it is to capture/harder to defend, if the enemy completly surrounds the areas around the one they are defending they can take the territory you are defending just by holding one point because of the influence they have over the area. usually if they hold two out of the three capture points on an area they can take it from you because of this dynamic

the-bwc.com Tell them HoneyBadger sent you. We are a huge outfit
Holy moly... these guys look hardcore. I'm reading all the info on the website and playing the game way more before I even think of joining up something like this (but I would love to at some point).

Thanks for explaining that capturing dynamic... it makes perfect sense now because we were totally cut off and surrounded by the two other factions while that capture was happening.

We have people that have never even played the game in with us, so it's no big deal if you aren't experienced, they have a lot of training for that type of thing. And when you see SOE vids on Planetside 2 like this one and this one That's us

I definitely want to join you guys... I want to be a part of a team like that. I just need to figure out teamspeak and a few logistic things in the game lol. And also probably move my computer when I want to play as my one year old is right above my computer room so it's hard to be talking into the mic late at night and not waking him up.

They have an orientation to get new people to teamdpeak up to speed as well as planetside 2 specific orientation

Also they have intoxiops if you like drinking where they get on the game and get drunk while playing. Note you don't have to drink to join in.

Yeah, only thing is, things like Orientation and BTI 1, I believe you only have a month to complete[DOUBLEPOST=1354757979][/DOUBLEPOST]And we are on Matherson US East
