A high school lesbian wants to bring her girlfriend to prom. The school says no. The ACLU says they gotta. The school says no they don't and cancels prom.

All I can think of? The lesbian chick is hot! Who wouldn't want to see her dancing close with her girlfriend?!? (By the way, she's 18 so I'm not pulling an Icarus.)

School takes it's ball and goes home, tears in its eyes.

Very mature.

This is especially weird, because at least in Ontario, or even just in my school board, proms were NOT school sponsored. If a student didn't plan it, rent a space, sell tickets to students (off the school property of course) and get everything else going, the prom just didn't happen.

Dave you obviously didn't see her full body.

But, uh, yeah. As far as the story is concerned...that's so shitty. No regard for the student either. They left her to fucking rot at that place. Yowzas.

It's sad that the school canceled, it is the only course of action the school could likely take. If the superintendent caved to the ACLU he would likely be ran out of town. If he/she fought it, it would bankrupt the school district. Now he can pawn the head ache of making that decision off onto the parents that will organize the likely private prom.

Sometimes I weep for the backwardness of people.

Anyhoo, my prom was private too. School sponsored it by buying a couple of tickets for the principal and such, and that was it -everything else was student organised...So, you know, if they want a prom, just friggin' organise it. I'm pretty sure a hall just opened up to do it in, unless it was being held on school property.

You know.... being a public school, they should allow it. Ah well. I guess the Principal doesn't like "teh gays" or at least the PTA might not like it. It is a sad sad day. Well, this can be a good thing (as other have posted above) starts a private prom where everyone can go :)

Unfortunately I don't see this happening either.[/QUOTE]

well... it would be like a massive dress up party. As long they don't sell tickets or have organization meeting on school property, it would be consider a private function that the school can't really restrict (as long you don't use the school name on anything)

I doubt the school is the only problem. It's a small town, and people aren't always the most tolerant. Add to that many people are going to blame her for the cancellation, and it's going to be a tough time getting her included.

Hopefully I'm wrong and it works out, but I wouldn't be too optimistic.

What I mean is, if the issue here is that people in the area have problems with lesbians attending their prom, there's a good chance that the students hosting the replacement party wouldn't invite them.

In my graduating year, I'm pretty sure there were a few girls who went as each-other's dates. One of the couples wasn't lesbian. In the year following mine there was a girl who brought her son (who was old enough to walk by that time) as her date. A few years before me, nearly lost in the antiquity of the school, a story was passed down about a guy who brought a ficus as his date.

This is all very crazy to me.

Dude, the last century we would have had the same story, but with black people. It was not as long ago as it feels.

The part that boggled my mind was that the school seemed to require people to register their dates. At my high school you just bought your tickets and showed up at the dance with whomever you happened to be with. This is an incredibly backwards situation all around.

I can't believe this is happening in the 21st century.
You and me both.

I just learned very recently about a teenage girl from my church who is very definitely lesbian. I always knew she was a little off: whenever the teenagers talk about sex or whatever she pipes up and declares that sex is only for procreation, and she could never ever imagine enjoying sex. Then a close friend of my younger brother confided that there had been some hardcore sexual tension, flirting, and pretty explicit talk between her and this girl on a sleepover. (my brother's friend is a lesbian, although not completely out about it) That was like, two years ago when they were both in High School. Then this church-girl went to a weekend retreat, came back completely rejecting the other girl's advances, going so far as to declare them no longer friends for something like a year.

I just want to shake her and tell her it's okay :(. I thought she was just a Jesus-nutbar before, but now that all of this has come out, it's clear to me that she's hella overcompensating.

Homophobia makes me so goddamn angry some days.

sometimes I wonder if those people are just trolling or TRULY believe in what they type (some I am willing to cleanse them by fire)

I went to my GF's prom with her. It was a "debacle" too. Honestly the girl should have kept her mouth shut about it and just showed up like we did.

That's the sad thing...they have to keep their mouth shut. At what point to people stop being quiet...I think she did what she had to do. Hopefully any backlash and suffering is worth it, and hopefully this helps to stop shit like this from happening again.

That's just absurd. Facepalm at an elite level.

Yeah Shego is right if she would have been quiet about it and just shown up she probably would have been ok but really, should she have to be? She shouldn't have to sneak around. I don't know about proms elsewhere but squeeing for weeks before hand about your plans was the fun part for me.

That's just it. You're right, she shouldn't have to. There will be backlash, there will be issues, but guess what? It's going to happen again and again and again.

I understand the point of "furthering the cause" I really do, but in my personal life, I never really contributed the "drop in the bucket" and the expense of my own happiness. Selfish as that is.

Well, and as a straight white male who will never have any of those problems, I can't say that what you did was selfish or wrong at all. We all agree though, it's a fucking shame these moments exist.

Oh definitely, I am not criticizing Shego at all. It is just shitty that this is even an issue.

edit-
my sister didnt even try and take a girl to the prom she just went with a guy. What was important to us was that she enjoyed her prom not that she made some kind of political statement.
