I just posted this very thing on the Games for Sale thread. But of course this is Steam, so it really does deserve its own thread.

Legend of Grimrock for $6?!?

Covar

Just bought my brother SpaceChem (he graduated this Spring with a B.S. in Chemistry) for $2.49

How the hell did you buy anything right now?!? I can't even get logged on because of the traffic.

Legend of Grimrock for $6?!?
Meh. DRM-free version was $6.99 a while ago on GOG. Other things look nice though.

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

Wow... I just got two friends to get with the times and get new computers + steam accounts and this is going to be an amazing opportunity to fill out their non-existant game collections.

I have a question though about the big mega packs. Let's say I were to buy the THQ pack to fill in some missing games but already owned 2 or 3 of the games in that pack. Do I get extra copies of those to gift out to others or do I just get one copy (I mean technically you'd be paying for two serial keys so you "should" get two copies of the game).

#8

Covar

Covar

I think it depends on the publisher. I know that's how Valve does it.

#9

Bubble181

Bubble181

I've always known myself to get a giftable copy, but as Covar says, it's probably up to the publisher.

#10

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

Hmmm... I guess I will have to investigate this further... maybe they have an FAQ on it or something (I can't really check now as all games related sites are blocked at work).

#11

Dave

Dave

One thing you can do is when you buy them automatically say you are buying them as a gift. That way they go into your gift page and you can either give them out or claim them for your own.

#12

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

Freaking awesome Dave... that's what I was going for. I think I will have to give this a try as I can fill gaps in my own collections while providing my friends with some important core games for our gaming nights. Thanks!

Anyone have anything to say about Grid? Looking for a racing game, and it looks like fun.

#14

Dave

Dave

No worries. It annoyed me enough to implement the "only once in a thread" signature addon. If he posts again it won't show up.

But it is quite large.

edit: Sorry to Drifter and this is the first time I've ever done something like this...

I edited your sig to be 50% as big as it was. It's still big but it's not OMFGHUUUUUUUGE!

Disappointed with today. My threshold is either $7.50 or 75% off. Most of the sales seem to be 50% off, and some are only 33%. Hopefully it'll get better as the days go on. It just doesn't seem like they're trying very hard yet.

#18

Dave

Dave

Quick! Somebody buy me Crusader Kings 2 for $10! I'll buy you a game tomorrow of equal or greater (up to $15) value at the time of your choosing during the sale.

The wife gets paid tomorrow and I don't want to miss it.

#19

Bubble181

Consider it done.[DOUBLEPOST=1342130846][/DOUBLEPOST]It's in my inventory. You want it gifted to Edrondol?
No, no, I'm sure he wants it gifted to his other Steam account, Bubble181 :whistling:

Yes, please. Just let me know what game you want during the sale and I'll gift it to you.

#22

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

Looks like I can't split up the THQ bundle after all... and I won't get duplicate copies of the games I own. That's a huge bite in the ass. Guess I should have researched it more carefully. *sigh*

My friend will be pretty happy with the assload of games coming his way now though...

#23

Frank

Am I the only one disappointed? It's either huge bundles or we have to watch Steam like a hawk for random short term sales. Kind of a bummer.

FWP for sure.

That's pretty much how they've always done it though, isn't it?

Yeah I played it for a bit last night. My whole time consisted of getting married and then getting overrun because my traitorous brother turned on me and I didn't know how to stop him. It is a very, very involved game. Makes Civ look like Chutes & Ladders.

*sob* That screaming sound is my wallet begging for mercy.

So far, I've only bought the original Half-Life and Hoard. I would get Portal 2 if my laptop could run it. I'll have to wait until whenever I can afford a better gaming laptop, like an XPS.

#31

I got Sonic Generations and the Tribes starter pack.

Everyone vote for 75% off Darkness 2. I want that game :p

Bought the Telltale games pack. Been meaning to try their stuff for a while now so that worked out quite well. The SEGA collection is calling to me as well - 72 games for only £34.99? Instead of over £300? Tempting...
Anyone have anything to say about Grid? Looking for a racing game, and it looks like fun.
I actually prefer Grid to the Dirt games. Think it runs on the same engine only with street and track racing instead of rally. And none of that annoying stop racing and do tricks now and look at all the cars you can buy as DLC that ruined Dirt 3.

#34

Bowielee

Bowielee

I'm almost tempted to get Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light just so I can get the Kain and Raziel skin DLC

#35

bhamv3

bhamv3

Grabbed the HL1 games.

True story: I actually pirated them when they first came out, never paid for them. Now, finally, I've paid Valve back for my transgression. At a fraction of the price they were selling for when I pirated them, true, but it's the thought that counts.

#36

Bowielee

Bowielee

Damn, AC Revelations won.... I already have that game :p

#37

Vrii

Vrii

Payday: The Heist is definitely worth the $5 it's on for right now - L4D style co-op shooter with persistent levels that give guns, perks and group bonuses. Also $15 for a 4-pack if you've got a group to play with.

#38

Bowielee

Bowielee

I played Tribes for a good chunk of the day. I highly recommend it for anyone who's on the fence about it. Even if you don't get the starter pack, you can still unlock everything in it with XP.

It really brought me back to playing Tribes 2.

#39

Vrii

The flash sale on the Alan Wake games are really, really good value too. Franchise pack is cheaper than just American Nightmare on XBLA.

#40

ScytheRexx

ScytheRexx

Anyone ever played Anno 2070?

I have been looking for a new city building strategy game, but I didn't want to pay the original price. Even now it's still not as cheap as I would like it, but if I get some recommendations I might just do it.

#41

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

I played the demo. It plays more like an RTS, honestly. And to be honest, not a very good one.

#42

Snagged Bioshock 2 for 75% off. Played the first few chapters of it.

So far, I don't understand why anyone would think this inferior to the first game. The atmosphere, gameplay, and storytelling is quite similar to Bioshock. Sure, there's not much innovation, but in terms of following the formula they know, I think they've been quite successful.

People find it inferior because it shoehorns in another powerful figure in Rapture that didn't exist in the first game, but suddenly playing the second we're supposed to believe that she was a major player too during all that mess that caused the downfall.

It wasn't terrible, just didn't have the same oomph the original did.

#44

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

Basically, Andrew Ryan was a great villain, but Sophia Lamb was kind crap. Or that's what I think the primary divide is.

#45

Bowielee

So my question would be, storyline issues aside, is it fun to play?

#46

Oh for sure. They built on the original quite nicely (being the most fragile Big Daddy ever aside).

#47

It definitely plays better. Hands down.

Well, that sells me. If it's fun, that's what matters.

Bioshock 2's gameplay was fun on da bun. Story kinda mehhh.. but it's a grand ol' time drillin' buttheads to death. Little hint? Get the damage and lube upgrades asap, and drill dash is your friend. Combine with ice plasmids, and big sisters are cake.

#50

Terrik

Terrik

Yeah I was kinda disappointed. Holy shit! I'm a big daddy!....and my armor is made of fluff! WTF.

#51

bhamv3

bhamv3

As far as I can tell though, they did sort of justify it.

You're one of the first Big Daddies ever, part of the Alpha Series. The other Alpha Series enemies you encounter in the game are noticeably more agile but less durable than the other Big Daddies.

Games for Windows Live is the biggest pile of crap ever. It was working perfectly yesterday, then today I can't fire up Bioshock 2 without crashing. Apparently GFWL ate my savegames (I was near the end, too) so now I need to start over. Which isn't terrible, since it's a fun game, but still. Pile of crap.

GFWL a pile of crap? Nonsense! It's on par with other such great content delivery systems as Origin. Same stability, same tendency to butt in when not needed, uses about the same amount of space, and it's just as reliable. :whistling:

#54

I friggin hate games for windows live. Requiring GFWL is one of the unpardonable PC sins, in my book. Right up there with anything other than a virus scanner requiring a reboot.

Yeah,I gotta second that opinion. If I'm doing a serious system update (new drivers, virus scanner, etc) then I'm okay with it, but if you NEED it for anything else, you didn't program it right.

#56

Frank

Frank

I think there are a few rants I made in the games on sale thread about not knowing a game was GFWL required when buying them on Steam. My own fault for not reading, but I was ragenauting nonetheless.

Picked up Darksiders on the Steam sale, because it was cheap and it looked like it might be fun. Got it all downloaded (took forever) and installed last night when I got back from my weekend away to relax and... it wouldn't play. Or rather, it would play just fine, but it seemed to think that I had an xbox 360 controller hooked up to my computer and absolutely would not give me any option to override the assumption. Figured out from the forums that it's seeing my Nostromo and assuming that I have an xbox controller - because of course, the only type of controller people would ever plug into a computer would be an xbox controller, right? Uninstalled it, glad it only cost $5. Tera makes the same assumption, but gives me the option to still use keyboard input. Seriously though, who decides that anything plugged in to a computer as an external controller is an xbox controller?

#58

Bubble181

Bubble181

So, important question: does the "complete" edition of AoE III on Steam still require GfWL? If so, I'm not buying, but if so, it's tempting.

Mis-recognizing a totally non -standard piece of hardware hardly makes it a bad port.

#62

Gared

Gared

Your really passing a great game for the stupidest of reasons
1) You're*
2) I may be missing out on a great game, but if the makers of the game can't be bothered to even put in an option to tell the game that no, this controller isn't an xbox controller, then I'm not going to be bothered to - according to the forums as to what you have to do to get it to work - reach behind my computer and unplug the controller, exit out of the software that runs in the background that lets me use the Nostromo, then go into the control panel and disable the driver so that the game isn't confused into thinking that because I have a Nostromo, or a joystick, or a flightstick controller, or a gaming mouse, or anything other than a keyboard and mouse being hooked up to my computer means that I want to play using an xbox controller. In fact, there are complaints about the game mistaking people's gaming headsets for xbox controllers. That's not just mis-recognizing one non-standard piece of hardware, that's a complete failure to recognize anything other than two very specific types of hardware (there are even reports of people having trouble just because they have a scroll wheel on their mouse, the game goes insane and just scrolls/spins non-stop).

Missed out on the Sonic Generations sale, but I managed to snag Portal 2 and Audiosurf.
I SUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuck at Audiosurf, but it's a game to play just for a few minutes at a time kinda thing.
Portal 2 is excellent, of course. Already beat it. Also already went through and systematically beat all of AmE's best times on the few that she had done in Challenge Mode.

Haven't tried the co-op yet. This is the first game I've got on Steam that is even multiplayer.

Seeing as I'm going to be unemployed in a few days and still have no job prospects lined up, I think I'll stop myself from picking up any more new games, even at these low low prizes.

Just picked up KOTOR. Never even tried steam before now. Dammit now it's even cheaper than yesterday. I paid $5 and now it's $2.5.

#67

ScytheRexx

ScytheRexx

I have picked up so many games. If I saw a game I wanted to play but didn't have a chance for <$5, I would jump on it, like the last two Prince of Persia games.

I also got a few that went on flash sales but were a bit more expensive, like the newest Assassin's Creed, but still way worth it at like $7.

Now I am trying to limit myself, should probably play most of the games I am getting before I keep buying more. I considered getting RAGE, but I remember hearing some bad things about it, so I am not sure I should.

Also, while I skipped ANNO, I ended up getting Tropico 4 to fill the town building niche while it was on a much cheaper flash sale. I really enjoy it.

Word of warning, in case you didn't know. Assassin's Creed: Revelations is the glitchiest and most obviously rushed entry in the series. It's still definitely good, but it may be best to lower your expectations slightly before going in. I personally think it's a slightly worse game than Brotherhood.

Thanks for the heads up. Again I got it for basically a little over $7 during one of the flash sales, so even if a bit buggy I am sure I will get my money worth. I was not going to buy it anywhere near full price. I did consider getting Brotherhood too, is it pretty good?

#71

bhamv3

bhamv3

The way I see it, each Assassin's Creed game is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They take the same core gameplay and add a handful of innovations to each successive game. Some of the innovations are good, some are meh, and some are outright terrible.

Brotherhood is my favorite of the bunch, followed closely by Assassin's Creed 2. Though AC2 gets some points taken off for mild consolitis. Brotherhood felt like it did almost everything right. The gameplay was solid, the assassin recruits were a nice addition, and the storyline was decent. Then for Revelations, they took some steps back. A tower defense minigame was shoehorned into the game. The recruits got some added functionality, such as being able to send them on missions and take over Mediterranean cities, except there's at least one major crash associated with the Mediterranean defense minigame. The storyline felt lightweight, with the big bad of the game introduced far too late to make any sort of emotional impact.

Revelations still a good game. It's just that Brotherhood felt better.

Okay I have to stop, I have already spent way to much money on games by this point, nickel and dimmed away a good chunk of my entertainment budget.

I may still buy something if the deal and the game are "OMG I CAN'T MISS THIS" but otherwise, I am happy with what I have!

In regards to the Assasin's Creed games, Storyline wise, Brotherhood comes before Revelations, so I would recommend playing that first.

I've been surprisingly reserved in my sale gorging. Only picking up KOTOR, Crysis Collection, YS: Oath in Felgana, Trine 2 and Harley's Revenge.

Which, considering the sales, I think I've held back quite a bit.

DNF wasn't AWFUL. It wasn't great either, it was thoroughly mediocre. But come now, it certainly was no Daikatana. Really, for anyone jonesing for the old Duke 3D feel, though, Serious Sam 3 feels like the proper successor.

I think the alien rape and boob walls push it firmly into the awful category.

That's an aesthetic thing, though. Offensive, sure, but offensive aesthetics doesn't make a bad game. Bad gameplay makes a bad game. And DNF doesn't have bad gameplay, it's just nothing spectacular and certainly not worth the 10+ year wait.

#84

Duke Nukem Forever has bad gameplay. It tries to mix being an old school shooter with everything that fucking sucks about modern FPSs and fails spectacularly at both. Limited run, only being able to have two weapons at once, very limited ammo, terrible corridor levels. The gameplay of Duke Nukem Forever was a disaster.

Oh GFWL, every time. Every God damn time I deal with you you make me want to smash everything I own, burn my house to the ground and begin a life as a crime fighting hobo who's first crime he must solve is the destruction of everyone who ever had anything to do with your creation.

Getting Harley Quinn's Revenge to work has taken probably more time than the 3 hours DLC plays.

This is unacceptable. This is wholly unacceptable. I am going to read, very carefully, any game I buy from now on. If even any word in the requirements has a G, an F, a W or an L I am not going to buy it. This is my solemn fucking vow. Fuck you GFWL.

Harely's Revenge can suck my dick too as a game. I took out every single fucking guy in the entire area (all 12 million snipers who all have a psychic connection), go into the wrong God damn door, come out and every one I had taken down is up and ready to roll again. Fuck this game.

The Total War pack sale is nuts. 75% off ever y game - and of the pack that contains everything for a discount already- 90+ euros down to 11.99. I already owned the two newer games and a couple of the DLCs, and it's still worth it for the other expansions and DLCs. And for a back-up of the older games (plus expansions I've never played) I have on disc.

#91

Frank

Frank

Dumb shit aside, at 3 bucks Harley Quinn's Revenge is barely worth it. Barely. It's maybe an hour long. It isn't fun and it's entirely reused assets. I was under the impression it took at least 3 hours to complete. That's nonsense.

So, it took me longer dealing with fucking GFWL bullshit than it did to actually play through.

At full price it's fucking extortion. One of the worst DLC's I've been dumb enough to purchase.

You highly recommend this pack? I'm a big fan of the Command and Conquer/Warcraft 2 RTS games (already bought the AoE 3 collection a couple of days ago). I've been out of gaming for a while, as they seem to get bigger/fancier/more complicated, and I'm looking into games that won't struggle on my 2 year old laptop.

Well, if your laptop's twwo years old, you've got a decent chance at least one of Napoleon or Empire won't run decently (my laptop runs both and is 2 years and a bit old, but was fairly expensive at the time - just saying I can't guarantee it'll play). Depends a bit on your hardware - most people find Napoleon more playable on older machines, I had less issues with Empire. Medieval and Rome will certainly run.

Bear in mind that the Total War games are quite complicated; definitely more so than the older C&Cs or Warcrafts. It's turn based and there's slightly more to be done (depending on the version).

But anyone who enjoys strategy should give at least a glance to these games. I play'm for the campaigns and don't really enjoy the real time battles; others play solely for the historical battles and such. Depends on what your idea of fun is. But yes, for €12 for the 4 games and all their expansions, it's beyond good.

If any of you haven't already voted for Longest Journey, fuckin' do it. I'm hoping if it wins it'll make both it and Dreamfall a cheap combo.
Yay!

They're both supa-cheap. Dreamfall was one of the only adventure games I've ever enjoyed. Probably because it was so fucking different from anything I had ever played before. I look forward to trying it's predecessor Longest Journey.

I'd get the pillar one except I can't do a video. No camera and the TF2 based one crashes my PC.

They're kind of old so don't be hating on me for that. They're really out there as far as adventure games go.

I'm kind of bummed Kingdoms of Amalur won't be on sale during the summer sale. Whoever's in controlling charge of the IP at whatever's left of 38 studios apparently only wants it on sale everywhere except Steam.

Being published by EA, they probably have a "no steam" policy.

If it makes you feel any better, I hated it.

EA published it, but not on Steam. The Steam publisher was 38 Studios themselves.

And I wasn't a big fan of the demo either but if it were cheap (and not on Origin) I was willing to give it a shot.

What do people think of the Witcher 2? I was always interested in this game, but I've heard it's occasionally crushingly hard in places in not fun ways (like battles where random chance is really the only way to win). Anyone recommend getting/avoiding it?

I just got it. Its apparently very demanding , graphically. however , it's supposed to be gorgeous. have to wait till it's downloaded to find out.[DOUBLEPOST=1342732659][/DOUBLEPOST]

TLJ is one of the best adventure games i've ever played. The second one is merely OK. Be warned that the ending to dreamfall WILL piss you off.

I'm a *little* concerned about that, but my new PC is well above the recc'd specs, so I should be okay were I to pick it up during the sale.

What goodies are these? Steam is cheaper by $4 and the Steam online thing has never bothered me personally.

That is some pretty cool stuff (though it seems like Steam has a lot of it).

Poking around the net, it sounds like you can use the Steam-provided CD key on GOG to get the DRM-free complete version anyways should you want it, so I may save the $4 bucks and keep my online games all together.

EDIT: Totally Ninja'd. :p

I still haven't finished ME3 as I'm replaying through 2 cause I didn't have my old save games.

As for the Dreamfall ending, it is infuriating. I didn't think it fit and left me waiting for another game that will never come to be. The creator of the series has said that he will not be returning to the universe.

Quantum Conundrum is fantastic. I knew it was made by the guy behind Portal, what I didn't know was John De Lancie would be the guy talking to me the whole time. Real gem of a game. Not as funny as Portal (since it doesn't have Eric Wolpaw writing it) but it's every bit as special a first person puzzler.

Has anyone here played Revenge of the Titans? I've been curious about it for awhile. Been looking for a good tower defence game since I've played and replayed and replayed Kingdom Rush (online flash game) far too many times. Looking for something to replace it.

A friend of a friend (And that friend's friend's friend) made a game that's in one of the indie bundles right now. It's called Capsized, it's on for 3.39, and it's supposed to be pretty good. I've already spent too much, seeing as I don't actually have a job right now, but I'm tempted.

So, now that this year's summer sale is winding down, what did you guys get in your haul?

I picked up the Half-Life 1 anthology, Bioshock 2, and Arkham City. There were a few other games that tempted me, such as Bastion and New Vegas, but I didn't get them in the end since I feel I have enough to play for now. Maybe Christmas.

#130

Let's see...

Borderlands
Dead Space 1&2
Back to the Future
The Walking Dead
Braid
Alan Wake
The Longest Journey & Dreamfall
Bioshock 2
Left 4 Dead 2

... I think that's it. All purchased at 75% off.

Fallout 3 - GOTY (I have no idea where my Fallout 3 discs are)
Just Cause 2
Quantum Conundrum
Evochron Mercenary
Oblivion - GOTY
Morrowind - GOTY (both for the same reasons as Fallout 3)
Dreamfall
Longest Journey
Dragon Age - Origins Ultimate
Star Wars KOTOR
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Crysis Wars
Crysis 2
Trine 2
YS: Oath in Felghana
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 - Uprising
Command and Conquer 3
Command and Conquer 3 - Tiberium Wars
Command and Conquer 4
Harley Quinn's Revenge
Binding of Isaac - Wrath of the Lamb
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

Fuck. Reading it like this. I overdid it a little. On the positive side, I only bought stuff when they were at their maximum discounts. I think Evochron Mercenary was the most expensive game I bought....however little sense that makes. So far, the gem has been Quantum Conundrum and the turd is definitely Harley Quinn's Revenge.

DAMN YOU STEAM SALES!

Just Portal 1 and 2 and Audiosurf. I probably won't pick up anything else until the Black Friday Sale.

A many of my purchases were "going legit" on titles I'd previously pirated.
Left 4 Dead 1&2, Borderlands, SSFIV arcade (arghlebargle games for windows live).
But I also snagged Payday: the Heist, Orcs Must Die 2, and Serious Sam 3 BFE. I was hoping Skyrim would come down to 75%, but I suppose that was never really going to happen. Next year, I suppose.

#134

AshburnerX

AshburnerX

I got PAYDAY as well. It's pretty fun, but it's hard as hell at times.

#135

Dei

Dei

Skyrim
Clones
Lume
Fallout:New Vegas
Dreamfall
The Longest Journey

I might have bought more, but I talked myself out of some (Why buy Arkham City when I haven't beaten Arkham Asylum because I got pissed at the game, for example), and already owned most of the games I would normally have been interested in. ;)

#136

Vrii

Vrii

The big thing to keep in mind with Payday is that you gain power as you level up - some of the new guns and bonuses make things that are hard bearable, and things that seem impossible only hard. Also playing with other people is a lot easier than playing with bots.

#137

AshburnerX

Only if they know what they are doing. I can do all the levels by myself, solo, with only the AI bots helping me. But my success rate with Humans is much lower than my success with AI.

Not much for me, with my currently limited income:

Half-Life 1 source
Hoard

Well, yeah. Bad players can be a lot worse than mediocre bots, but they can also be a lot better. Usually when I play it's with a friend or two and bots filling out the gaps, and it's a lot more fun and successful than trying to play alone.

As to my pickups in the sale, I got:

Alan Wake's American Nightmare
Amnesia
Bioshock 2
Dead Island
LA Noire
Terraria

Take what Frank got, add up the total, then double it. That is close to mine.

Be aware most of them were in the 2.50 to 5.00 range, with only a few rare ones above that, but still... I am going to be set for the rest of the year on games.

Universe Sandbox
