I've watched a few new movies in the last few days.
Goon- Surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It isn't as strong as Slap Shot on the social commentary- it does touch on the bloodlust of of the crowds, but makes less of an effort to point it out than Slap Shot does, and definitely celebrates the enforcer's role in hockey more than criticize it. But those points are briefly made, and homophobia in the locker room and concussions on the ice are both touched upon. But what it lacks for in brains, it makes up for in being extremely funny. I didn't think I'd like it half as much as I did.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes- Never seen any Planet of the Apes movies excpet for that horrid Tim Burton one. This was pretty well done, although the CG character main ape is too close to the uncanny valley for my liking.
Rio- Meh.
Winnie the Pooh - Wasn't a big Winnie the Pooh kid growing up, but even so this made me feel like a little kid again. And BEAUTIFUL animation, too. I think I need to find this on DVD.
Kung Fu Panda 2- Maybe my expectations were too high from all the hype people gave this one, but I didn't think it was any better than the first one. That isn't to say it was BAD, but it wasn't the huge leap forward in Dreamworks' storytelling that everyone said it was. It was actually a step back after How to Train Your Dragon.
