[TV] Talk about the last TV you watched, the catchall thread

Last Week Tonight - showed Bear Grylls eating/drinking freshly squeezed elephant shit. I really could have used a warning. Damn near vomited on my PJs.

I'm 4 episodes into Star Trek Picard and I'm done. I hate this show too. I can't stand the Alex Kurtzman/Roberto Orci fuckery of Star Trek any longer.

What Picard wants to be: a dark look at what the Federation becomes when the men and women who fought for it's ideals abandon it and Picard's redemption of both it and himself for his lifetime of failures.

What Picard actually is: a whole lot of the first bit and not much of the second. I'm going to finish out the season, but fuck... can we get a solid win?

And I'll say it again.

FUCK having swearing in Star Trek. STOP IT. FUCKING STOP IT.

Some of my ONLY good memories of my childhood with my dad is watching The Original Series and Next Generation with him. If casual swearing stops anyone from watching this show with their kids, you are doing it fucking wrong. It never feels right.

Oh God, I just watched the Red Letter Media breakdown of episodes 2 and 3.....and if the one prediction Rich "Somehow is inside the head of all bad decision makers" Evans comes to pass, Picard will go down as the worst God shit ever.

His prediction:

The Jad Vash or whatever they're called, the super Tal Shiar, created the Borg.

I've been watching Altered Carbon season 2 with a friend who never watched season 1. She doesn't know what to think of it and I feel like they've managed to strip everything interesting out of books 2 and 3 and just reuse character names pointlessly. It's honestly shocking how watered down and mundane they've made the series.

I just found out that a lot of the creative team behind the later seasons of The Flash are working on AC season 2. No fucking wonder it's watered down and feels incredibly cheap (see how many sets they reuse from season 1, despite being on an entirely new planet). There's like 3 locations used for the first 5 episodes. It's sub SyFy level.

AC season 1 is The Lord of the Rings movies, stuff is changed here or there but the main drive of the story is the same and it's a decent adaptation.

AC season 2 is literally only the scenes from the Hobbit movies where elves and hobbits fall in love.

So skip season 2. Got it. Which is a damned shame. I really liked the first season.
Despite us trying not to, my wife and I have fallen asleep on the couch while watching every episode in season 2 thus far. Anthony Mackie is great but... yeah. Just not keeping my attention.

A friend texts me and says, "Wanna get caught up on Picard."

I say, "I'd rather eat glass."

She says, "I'll bring over pot pie."

I say, "Fine."

I'm caught up now. I wish I'd eaten glass. I'm probably going to spoil some shit, but who cares.

I'll elaborate. The romulan incest twins are legitimately the worst villains ever. Everyone on the show is dumb, then not dumb, then dumb again, often in the same fucking scene. This show is coasting ENTIRELY on nostalgia. It's writing is so God damn bad.

What's the first fucking thing Riker says to Picard? "Remember when you tried to save those people and I told you that was dumb." (paraphrased) LoL. Their fucking kid died of a virus that can only be cured using android brains. WHO THE FUCK IS WRITING THIS SHOW?! What is the point of that stupid fucking Romulan ninja sidekick? The motley crew of fucking idiots? ANYONE?

How does Star Trek manage to keep getting worse?

Hi, I'm Seven of Nine, there's literally like 12 episodes of Voyager that play up the fact that my borg parts and booze don't play well together that I get faceblasted drunk on a single glass of synthoholic wine. Here I am on Picard, a hard drinking hateful murder machine cruising the galaxy fucking shit up. Hi, I'm Hugh, the legitimately only good callback, oh shit I died for no reason. I'm Icheb, from VoyAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGFHGHGHGHG MY FUCKING EYE PLEASE MURDER ME SEVEN OF NINE!

Perhaps alcohol is different enough from synthehol that it doesn't cause problems for her.

But i'm with you on everything else.

Picard Episode 8 thoughts.

One fucking romulan was so sad about the vision they saw, it broke an entire Borg cube....a "species" for lack of a better term, that has no issues fucking wiping out entire planets worth of people, who I'm sure are also sad, but one sad romulan who saw some exploding planets and mean robots can nuke a whole cube's brains. This fucking show is so shit.

BORG CAN SURVIVE IN SPACE YOU FUCKING IDIOTS. BEAM THEM BACK ONBOARD.

"I promise no more murders." "WELCOME BACK TO THE CREW!"

THIS SHOW FUCKING SUCKS. This shit is worse than Discovery.

Funny comment my friend made at the end of the episode.

"Are those Romulan ships?" referring to the weird, shitty bird ships around the Borg cube.
"Yeah, I think so."
"They look like someone's paper airplane got crumpled up."
Yes, they did. Of course Starfleet is sending a "SQUADRON" to help Picard, so, as is Alex Kurtzman Star Trek style, instead of being lumbering starships in battle, we're getting tons and tons of little ships in a chaotic fucking mess ala the end of Discovery season 2.

Seriously, these things look like shit.

A lot of folk are bringing up the Mass Effect-ness of the whole thing, but Mass Effect also ripped off a lot of better sci-fi stories, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are ripping off better sci-fi too and not just ripping off Mass Effect. I FUCKING SHOULDN'T BE, but I am.

Considering the latest revelation, it's unlikely the Cube broke because of the Romulan state of mind about the message.

I'm hoping that at least they address it as a fail safe put in in case the message got to a hybrid "species". At least that would make sense.

Okay, stuck inside so I thought might as well try something new. Decided to check out Netflix's Kingdom.

It's a Korean horror period piece that plays out like Walking Dead had a baby with Game of Thrones.

It's batshit crazy and I kinda like it.

So I've been working my way through Brooklyn 99 for the first time. Up to Season 6. And I have to ask: why are Hitchcock and Scully still employed there? They're incompetent bordering on dangerous, Scully is flat-out misogynistic, and don't seem to actually help in cases.

Like, I get it's a comedy and like the supporting characters in Scrubs like Ted, Doug, and Todd, they're the "comedy weapons" when you need a punchline. And the two actors are funny as hell, with great chemistry between the two.

But is there a canonical reason why they're still employed at the 99, or for the NYPD at all? With characters like Ted, Doug, and Todd, they were at least half-competent at their jobs. Well, Doug and Todd. I think Ted was kept only because Kelso wanted someone to torture.

But Hitchcock and Scully not only are rarely, if ever, involved in a case, oblivious with their own shenanigans (usually something food related), that I can't for the life of me understand why anyone at the 99 keeps them employed there. They're completely useless.

An addendum on the Scrubs thoughts:

Doug was exceptionally incompetent until he started working in the morgue, where he fit right in.

Todd, as much as he was horribly sexist, was to my recollection rarely shown to be bad at being a surgeon.

With that kind of characters, I think you sort of have to assume they're handling lots of small other cases off-screen. Maybe they're really good at handling the paperwork for traffic citations or something.

I think it has been shown that Hitchcock and Scully have been there a long time and know how to manipulate things to keep themselves employed with the least amount of work required. There have been several episodes where the rest of the team underestimates them and they come through but almost always to their own advantage.

Found this TV show on Netflix called Breaking Bad, it's about the trials of a middle class family and the American healthcare system in New Mexico. I won't spoil it for you but it's really good.

I dunno, that sounds like the type of thing that will get cancelled after 1 season with no resolution.

I'm going to be honest with you Nick. There are more Hitchcock and Scullys in policing than there are Terry and Rosas.
