Tattoo questions

HowDroll

HowDroll

For a few years now, I've really wanted to get a tattoo of some sort. It would obviously be something small and easily-hidden, but I really think it would be awesome to get one. The biggest thing that stood in the way of me was my ex. He said tats on women are disgusting and he'd break up with me if I ever got one, so for years, I didn't. Now that we're broken up, my desire to get one is even stronger than before -- if anything, almost as a "fuck you" to him.

Now, I have three questions for you all:

For those of you who don't have tattoos:
1) If you saw a girl with a geek/video game tattoo, would you think she was totally ridiculous to the point where it could potentially be a deal-breaker? My asshole ex aside, I'd like to hear the general opinion on this.

For those of you who do:
2) How much does a quality tattoo generally cost? I doubt it would be more than 3 in x 3 in, and probably would be b&w. I'm not worried about the pain factor, but I'd like to know how much you paid before I start trying to figure out where I'm going.

For everyone:
3) Any good ideas of things to permanently ink on my body? :D I'll probably get it on my upper back near one of my shoulders--it's one of the areas that'll be least affected when I get pregnant. I'm leaning toward either a Hylian crest/Triforce or a Gears Cog. But if you guys have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I think a small tasteful symbol would be a turn-on more than anything. Triforce to me fits that equation, but then again, I'm a Zelda nut.

As for cost, it varies wildly depending on who does it, where the tattoo is, how big it is, whether it's color/b&w, and how detailed you want it. Do a bit of research around the area, especially asking people who already have tats (I'm not one of them), see who does a good job. That's really more important than anything, IMO, is to make sure the tat is well done.

A cute girl with a reeeally tiny triforce where you are saying you'd like to get it does definately get some extra points!

#4

Shannow

Shannow

If you do not know what you want, that is a pretty sure sign not to get one yet. Just getting one for its own sake isnt usually the best of ideas.

As for cost, varies greatly, based on size, time, artist, etc.

Personally, I feel most body mods of any kind on anyone are generally unattractive, though people here will probably completely disagree with me.

Also, since it's so soon since you broke up with your ex, I'd say give yourself a few months of thought on this... if you're really getting the tattoo to say "fuck you" to the ex you might regret it not long after your feelings cool down.

Oh, I've wanted one for quite awhile. This is just the push I needed to actually go and get one done.

1) really depends on the tattoo. A Gears cog on the shoulderblade would be awesome. I giant Mario on your face, not so much.
2) a 3x3 shouldn't be that much, but it depends on how detailed it is, and what things go for in your local tattoo scene. Probably $75-100ish, give or take.
3) both those tats sound pretty awesome, if you ask me, though I like the Hylian crest better

There are a few types of tattoos that genuinely irritate me--like someone's name written on the top of their foot (in case they forget it, I suppose?), Japanese characters, butterflies...

But I think that geeky tattoos are cute! Small, discreet reflections of people's interests are fun. Sure, they'll all look like creepy, amorphous nothing by the time we're 70, but it'll also be a fun memory to look back on even when you can't recognize it. :p I agree with Shannow, that you should think about what you want specifically before going in.

#9

Piotyr

Piotyr

Other geeky, recognizable, simple designs: Pac-man/Ms. Pac-man, 1up mushroom, Samus screw-attack symbol :)eyebrows:), HALO symbol, Zelda hearts (I've seen one tat with two full hearts and one half-broken heart in the Zelda style...pretty nice)

#10

Cajungal

Cajungal

Another thought I had--I'm sure the "fuck you" to the ex is not your primary reason to do this, but if you feel like it might be, that's another good reason to wait.

#11

Tinwhistler

Tinwhistler

oh, and to quote Piotyr, defintiely ask around for a quality place. I've had tats done by little strip joint places, and I've had tats done by 'big name' parlors in Houston (Shaws for instance). You definitely want to go with a place with a bigger reputation.

If you lived anywhere near here, I'd totally send you to my brother-in-law--one of the most trusted in the area, AND he's well-known for his original designs. People go to him specifically when they want something really different but are not sure what.

Gosh, I hope not. One of my five tattoos is the Rebel Alliance insignia from Star Wars, so there'z a chance I'm in trouble if that's the case...

In my world, geeky tats are a plus, but...I'm a freak, so...

For those of you who do:
2) How much does a quality tattoo generally cost? I doubt it would be more than 3 in x 3 in, and probably would be b&w. I'm not worried about the pain factor, but I'd like to know how much you paid before I start trying to figure out where I'm going.
I think I paid about $50 for my first tattoo, but that was something like thirteen years ago and it's pretty small, only two colors.
More recently, I've paid anywhere from $75 to $200 for a tattoo, but it really does depend on how big it is, how complex it is, and how many colors.

I wouldn't recommend getting anything that doesn't blow your skirt up, that doesn't really mean something to you. Don't get a tattoo just for the sake of getting one. That shit's FOREVER, so...give it a lot of thought first, is my advice. Seriously.
I have five tats, myself, and each one has at least six months of thought gone into it--sometimes years--before I even started scraping the cash together. Just sayin'...

A friend of mine has this tattooed on him (which I subsequently made into this motivational poster):

Heh.

Get this

but seriously key point is to get something that you want not if other people will be attracted too it.

But what do I know I'm still saving the cash for my first one

I'm honestly asking to see if anyone else has any ideas to see if that lightning bolt from the heavens strikes me; as silly as it would be to say that a triforce or a cog is "meaningful" in any real way, I've been thinking for a really long time about getting a gaming tattoo. I've wasted so many hours of my life between those two games that it "means" more to me than, say, some random Tweety bird or Chinese symbol a lot of people get. Between my ex giving me shit about it and a lack of courage, I've put it off, but now it's something I really feel like I want to do. But, just to be clear, this isn't some "wow, I broke up with my boyfriend so I'm randomly going to do something crazy!" thing. It was probably going to happen eventually, and I've decided that now is the time to start seriously thinking about it.

#16

Cajungal

Cajungal

I'm glad you're in a position now where you can think seriously about it without having to worry about a lot of negative reaction. :)

And yeah, meaning is totally relative. A potato on my ankle would be a marvelous tattoo for me, but a terrible one for others (for reasons I've mentioned before). There's no reason for a non-gamer to get a gamer tattoo, but it's a part of your life. When you look at it, you'll think of all the fun times you've had playing stuff.

I have a tattoo but I'm answering all your questions anyway.

1) Nope. I like tattoos in general, and as long as the artwork is decent, I'm good.

2) 3x3 inch in black and white would be around 70/80 bucks, I think. Of course, it depends completely on where you go, but that seems a safe estimate. I let a 2x2 inch with a bit of colour set last christmas and it was 65 bucks.

3) Your back is a good idea but you might want to consider not ON your shoulder blade. That's a difficult place to tattoo. I mean, it can be done, but with all the bone it's not a very smooth place. If that makes sense. As for images, I don't have any suggestions, and ultimately you want to decide for yourself.

Also I agree with Cajungal about 'the fuck-you to your ex'.

Just remember 2 things.

1. If you get one a good rule of thumb for the ladies, is not to have it visible in a strapless evening dress/wedding gown.

2. You will be seeing this thing for years and years. Is what is cool to you at 20, cool at 40, 60 or 80?

From those two games specifically?

Well, Zelda-wise, besides the Triforce and Hylian crest, specifically, the "hearts" design or the Master Sword are pretty recognizable, but that's probably it for "small and tasteful".

As for Gears of War, it's probably either the cog w/skull, or just the cog maybe.

#21

KCWM

KCWM

Tastefully done, tattoos are cute. Geeky tattoos are a definite plus in my opinion, but you also have to consider where you are asking.

While the Cog is a pretty cool idea, Zelda is more of a timeless game...the reference will likely still be relevant 30 years from now, whereas Gears of War might not be. Though, GoW does work better in a black and white.

A friend of mine had a 4 inch star put on her back at a place near my apartment and it cost her $80. It was red and black and completely filled in.

The SMB Mushroom or Stars are kind of cute as well and are pretty easily recognizable. I said common place before, but that wasn't the word I wanted to use.

I've always wanted to get a tattoo of the little Pearl Jam guy, but have no idea where to place it.

Figure out what you want, then think about whether you'll still like it or if it'll means something to you 20 - 30 years from now. I wanted to get Tigger when I was thinking of a tattoo. I loved Tigger. When I asked myself if I thought I'd love Tigger when I was 60 years old I really thought I'd probably regret getting that tattoo.

Also, even if this is a little bit of a "fuck you" to your ex, wait a few months before you actually do it.

Oh and I paid $125 for a blackwash tribal/Celtic design across my back (8" wide x 4" high approx.).

#25

Chippy

Chippy

I've never been that into Zelda, and it's been forever since I played Gears of War. So, I can't offer any better ideas. I DO really like the COG idea, though.

I've always liked tattoos. And I don't know many people that would consider tattoos on a woman a dealbreaker. In fact, I know a few friends that would propose to a girl right there on the spot if she had a GoW tattoo.

I'm 41, and the only thing I regret about my tattoos is the fact that I can't wear a strapless dress without two of them showing. If I had to do it over, I'd still get all 4, but I'd get them in more discreet areas.

I have the companion cube tattooed to my wrist, so I'm in favour of geeky tattoos, obviously. In general I think a lot of tattoos can be quite hot, and as a geek I definitely notice when someone's tattoo is geeky, and I think it's all the more awesome.

Some of my friends think it's silly, others think it's awesome, and it's certainly gotten a few conversations with people of the opposite sex who recognize it -and some with those who don't.

It cost me about $90, but to answer your latter question, I did tip my artist and extra $20 for being so great to me for my first tattoo.

I wholly endorse your decision, and you definitely have to post pics when it's done!

Yeah, the Rebel Alliance insignia was my first. I'm a fan from WAY back, and the Rebel Alliance held multiple layers of meaning for me, so it seemed appropriate.

I have the companion cube tattooed to my wrist...
I've considered the Companion Cube more than once; I love that thing. :)
But my next is likely to be that half-sleeve of circuitry I've been threatening to do for years. Like something out of Tron all down my right forearm.

#34

LordRavage

You should get one with deep special meaning to you. I know people have said it but you should really be sure. I have known far too many people to get one and regret it. It will be on your skin for life. I hope you like commitment.

Also, you should get a tattoo artist you have a good repore with. The artist tends to do a better job when they like you and are more apt to listen to what you want. (But its you HowDroll...whats not to like. :)

You cant go wrong with dragons. I am sure there are enough video game dragons that one of them will have a special meaning for you. But like I said, choose something special for yourself. You will know it when you see it and if you dont see it, try to have someone draw what you are looking for.

Or you could do what a friend of mine did. He wanted a tattoo but didnt want anyone to know about it. So he shaved his head and had two dragons tattooed on each side. He then let his hair grow. I asked him why he did it. His repsonse "I know they are there, no one else needs to know.".

4) I tipped. :)

Well, as long as "Fuck you, ex-BF!" isn't an issue... I don't see why not ;)

Just don't go over the top. Something small and tasteful, as you said, works best. If you later find yourself in a situation where you'd like to get more, that's a different story. But don't start with a frickin' painting on your back or anything on your face ;) Also, I'd advice against a 'tramp stamp'. Shoulder or ankle are always nice places for something small or even teasing.

As for the design... until you find something that you know will look good in 20 years, then you have it :p

Personally, tattoos-wise: I dislike large tattoos. One or two small tattoos that have personal meaning, those are a-okay or even sexy in my book. Tribals and Chinese chiffres, not so much (the latter always make me wonder if it reads "Deepfried chicken in sweet-and-sour sauce. Cheap but filling" :D ).

I only dislike tatoos on women, when they're showing during their wedding. It just looks like white trash to me. Maybe that's b/c all the white trash weddings I've been to, had a bride with some ridiculous tat.

I wouldn't ever stop my gf from getting one if she wanted it though. That's a bit jacked up.

I've thought about getting the Vitruvian Man or something science-related. I'd like one on the inside of my forearm. That's really the only place on me that isn't covered in hair.

^I thought this too, until my sister's best friend's wedding. She had a strapless dress with a lower back, surprisingly not gross-looking for a wedding dress, and you could see her back tattoo. But it's so pretty and intricate, and nothing weird or shocking, and it even kind of went with the color of the dress. I wish I had a picture. Of course it helps that she's so gorgeous she'd look good in a potato sack.

I never said mine was! I fully embrace that it's probably the most tasteless, stupidest tattoo on Earth, but I like it for that reason (and that I can cover it up). If my wife wouldn't divorce me over it, I'd get a full back portrait of this:
. I wish I was kidding. I love outrageously idiotic tattoos.

Just to add my own two-cents:

Tattoos on a girl are totally hot. Though, I'm a fan of body-mods in general, up to a point. You can go overboard, of course.

As for whether or not it might be a dealbreaker for some people: to be perfectly honest, if something as simple as a tattoo is really all it takes to turn someone completely off, then I don't think that person would be that good of a time anyway. Different tastes for different people, of course, but if it were me, that's my answer.

Chicks with tatts are a turn on for me. It's your body so if you want one go and get one. Don't worry about joe random liking it, only you have to like it.

As for design, I would probably go with the triforce. But thats just me saying that because I grew up on zelda. If I met a chick with a triforce tatt id be all over that.

As for the tip it isn't a requirement. They do make a profit off the tattoo so they won't starve if you dont give them some extra. But they dont have a huge profit margin so a tip is nice. Especially if they put in extra work (Full custom designs and things of that nature) or you think they did an exceptional job. Friend of mine was getting some piercings and passed out after the 2nd hole. One of the workers walked home (only about 2 mins away) and got a nice cold bottle of water instead of just giving him tap water, cold face towel and a pillow in case he was out for a long time. Big tip after that one.
Also tips leave an imprint in the artists mind, they have more chance of remembering you if you return in the future. They might be more inclined to squeeze you in sooner if it suits your schedule or maybe redraw your artwork sooner than some random off the street. Oh and tips don't need to be cash. If you connect with your artist and find something they like you can buy a small gift, or even bake a favourite food if they mention it. You might be lucky and get a Penny Arcade fan and you can cook them some dickerdoodles.

Most importantly is check out the studio before hand if you can. Make sure it's clean and you feel comfortable. Some people give me the creeps and I couldn't get any work done by them so I tend to meet them first and if I like them then I organize an appointment.

I cant comment on the price because I'm sure it's different in american than down under But we generally charge 50- 200 for small to medium tattoos depending on colour and detail. most expensive I have seen is a $650 full sleeve and shoulder. No space left blank, Lots of colour and lots of detail. Took over 2 years to finish so the price isnt that bad over time.

One last thing though, take lots of pictures if you can. Post them up here or even at www.bmezine.com (warning sometimes NSFW. Can contain some nudity, piercing in progress and disturbing content such as blood letting and scarification. usually all that stuff is hidden but sometimes they have a pic or 2 on the front page). Lots of good stuff to look at on there. Its a big collection of tattoo and piercing stories and photos, as well as articles discussing everything from procedures to experimental modifications and reaction from the general public. Good stuff.

Whoa....My little comment turned into an epic wall of text. Hope it goes well.

Also, as for placements, I have two friends with little tatoos right behind their ears (but not on the "behind" part of the ear itself!). They are always covered by hair, except that odd time you actually see them, in wich you say "woah, yoy have a tatoo there?!"
They are really tiny though, maybe one is maybe 2x2cm (a little outline of a star) and the other is 5x5 cm (the eye of horus). I find them to be really cool... And pretty hot too. I mean, they are very kissable, and as they are always hidden, also like a private element of some sort.

Now that we're broken up, my desire to get one is even stronger than before -- if anything, almost as a \"fuck you\" to him.

Okay, I have tats but having tats does not make everyone with tats attractive to you. Of course I'm not one to talk as I love tats and love Suicide Girls, but just figured I'd mention that. Some tats can be horrid and ugly. So ugly in fact that you would be embarrassed to walk next to someone with 'm.

For those of you who do:
2) How much does a quality tattoo generally cost? I doubt it would be more than 3 in x 3 in, and probably would be b&w. I'm not worried about the pain factor, but I'd like to know how much you paid before I start trying to figure out where I'm going.
Costs vary greatly on the shop you go to. Just make sure it is a quality shop. Mistakes can generally not be undone/covered up.

On the b/w thing, I hear it said often that "getting a small b/w tattoo" is for people who really are too afraid or unsure to get one in the first place. Not that they can't be nice looking, but as a first tat too many go for the 'simple tiny black speck' that becomes utterly meaningless and more for the "I got a tat! Ain't I outrageous!" factor. Tats last a lifetime, they are not for the "it's cool now" crowd.

"I know! I'm gonna have the Chinese symbol for love/soup inked on my neck/butt!"

For whatever you want to get: find a good flash copy, or have it drawn by someone or whatever. Then print it out and hang it up where you mainly sit, like at the PC. Keep it there for at least 2 months so you have to stare at it for that long. If you still like it afterward, don't want any change made, then go ahead and have it set. Alternatively, get a henna tat set, those won't last and you'll get an idea if you'll like it.

Remember, you're 20, you might have to do with this thing you're getting for another 60 years. A 'geek' tat might not be so hot by then anymore. Again, tats last a lifetime. Will a Cog Gear still have significant meaning to you when you're 40.. 60.. 80? Would it have any meaning beyond "it looked kinda cool" in the first place?

If you want text, make ONE HUNDRED PERCENT SURE it is spelled correctly. God that looks idiotic when it's not.

Don't get anything above the cleavage, that is rarely done right.
(It can happen, but you will be paying a shitton of money too).
Not even Kat Von D has 'm, so just don't even try.

Photographic, again expect to be paying as shitton of monies becuse you want to have that done by an experience artist or you get this.

Funny tats are rarely funny 2 weeks later.

Another thought I had--I'm sure the \"fuck you\" to the ex is not your primary reason to do this, but if you feel like it might be, that's another good reason to wait.
^ This. Really, you'll want to be sure of what you get and why you get it. Unless you like scars you can't really get rid of it.

some tattoos....too geeky.
<div align="center"> is also bad coding.

Oh! Another question: do you tip tattoo artists?
only if you plan on going back =)
Most shops (at least around here) will come with a quality guarantee. Meaning you can come back within the next 6 months for free touch ups. Some even do lifetime touch ups for free. Yes, I recommend tipping.
Funny tattoos are the only one's worth getting in my humble opinion. They never get old unless it's a pop-culture reference or some shit like that. Knock on my ass-lips all you want. When I moon someone at age 60, it'll still be hilarious.

This thread has been super helpful. I really appreciate all the feedback from you guys.

I think I'll probably go for it, but I'm going to wait until January. That'll give me a solid few weeks to really think about it (and another paycheck or two under my belt). I'm really leaning toward the triforce right now, as awesome as the cog would be. Whoever said that it has more timelessness is absolutely right.

The triforce is one of my favorite fucking things ever... BUT, as a tattoo.. it might be also a bit too... simple. Unless you added depth to each piece or whatever, I guess. That'd be cooler.

The Crest of Hyrule has the triforce in it and is, in my opinion, a much more appealing design for a tattoo:

A friend of mine has the Hyrule crest done between his shoulders in black and red and it looks really good. I'd recommend the crest over just the plain triforce if you were going to go that route.

Impressive color work. I'd still never get it as a tattoo myself, I just don't feel that strong a connection to anything I'd want marked on my skin. I change my mind too often about my tastes in media. Still, if someone wants to express themselves via their skin, it can be a nice work of art if done right.

ARGH, do NOT give the triforce colors... seriously... I like the rest of the colouring, but if you do that make the triforce either the same color (like it should be since it's part of the same emblem) or at least make it golden, like the real triforce is.

Also, someone please tell me why the ad for this topic is about purchasing my own tattoo chair and other accessories to start my own tattoo business.

I'm pretty sure that's not in any way a legal job to just start on a whim.

My friend got the triforce tattoo(not the crest) and it is not good looking. I think its because its a little bit too big to be a just black tattoo (around 3+ inches long per side). I think a smaller one would look so much better for a solid color or a golden one with some depth if you want a little bit bigger one. Though I think that would look good at any size you choose.
Oh and I do think a few gamer tats can be sexy.

Vyx, I have the very same ad.

Which, in all honesty, is a welcome change of pace. The smalltown-grown side of me has felt... a little uncomfortable as of late, since most ads I get seem to be all about gay dating.

EDIT: Luckily, the tide seems to be turning. Though I'm not too keen on going to Thailand for holidays, either.

Coming a bit late to the party here, but:
a) small, sexy tattoos can be sexy..... Only very few women can pull off really big tattoos or tramp stamps, in my opinion. As someone mentioned - a cool little tattoo somewhere can be a great kissing spot. Gaming tattoos are awesome, as long as they're timeless enough.

b) Prices have already been named enough, same for tipping

c) As for what to put where...Egh. I personally really don't like the triforce, but if it really means something to you, go ahead. As for where...I'm a fan of ankle, inside of wrist, or side of torso (below the ribs) for women. The first two are sensitive locations, but relatively easily hidden, and places where people expect decoration anyway; while the third really can make for beautiful sights if done right, and can easily be shown or hidden depending on what you decide to wear.

I'd say get the Triforce, because aside from being a well-known, old and beloved gaming symbol, it's also a pleasant symbol to look at in its own right. It has an abstract simplicity about it.

I wouldn't get a Gears of War cog or anything more modern, as in five years or so the Gears franchise may not have stood the test of time.
