Just don't go over the top. Something small and tasteful, as you said, works best. If you later find yourself in a situation where you'd like to get more, that's a different story. I only dislike tatoos on women, when they're showing during their wedding. It just looks like white trash to me. Maybe that's b/c all the white trash weddings I've been to, had a bride with some ridiculous tat.
I wouldn't ever stop my gf from getting one if she wanted it though. That's a bit jacked up.

^I thought this too, until my sister's best friend's wedding. She had a strapless dress with a lower back, surprisingly not gross-looking for a wedding dress, and you could see her back tattoo. But it's so pretty and intricate, and nothing weird or shocking, and it even kind of went with the color of the dress. I wish I had a picture. Of course it helps that she's so gorgeous she'd look good in a potato sack.

I'm not directly opposed to tattoos, but I don't think I'd date a girl with a tattoo. I mean, it wouldn't be a huge deal breaker, but I've always liked the "natural body" thang.
Chicks with tatts are a turn on for me. It's your body so if you want one go and get one. Don't worry about joe random liking it, only you have to like it.
As for design, I would probably go with the triforce. But thats just me saying that because I grew up on zelda. If I met a chick with a triforce tatt id be all over that.
As for the tip it isn't a requirement. They do make a profit off the tattoo so they won't starve if you dont give them some extra. But they dont have a huge profit margin so a tip is nice. Especially if they put in extra work (Full custom designs and things of that nature) or you think they did an exceptional job. Friend of mine was getting some piercings and passed out after the 2nd hole. One of the workers walked home (only about 2 mins away) and got a nice cold bottle of water instead of just giving him tap water, cold face towel and a pillow in case he was out for a long time. Big tip after that one.
Also tips leave an imprint in the artists mind, they have more chance of remembering you if you return in the future. They might be more inclined to squeeze you in sooner if it suits your schedule or maybe redraw your artwork sooner than some random off the street. Oh and tips don't need to be cash. If you connect with your artist and find something they like you can buy a small gift, or even bake a favourite food if they mention it. You might be lucky and get a Penny Arcade fan and you can cook them some dickerdoodles.
Most importantly is check out the studio before hand if you can. Make sure it's clean and you feel comfortable. Some people give me the creeps and I couldn't get any work done by them so I tend to meet them first and if I like them then I organize an appointment.
I cant comment on the price because I'm sure it's different in american than down under But we generally charge 50- 200 for small to medium tattoos depending on colour and detail. most expensive I have seen is a $650 full sleeve and shoulder. No space left blank, Lots of colour and lots of detail. Took over 2 years to finish so the price isnt that bad over time.
One last thing though, take lots of pictures if you can. Post them up here or even at www.bmezine.com (warning sometimes NSFW. Can contain some nudity, piercing in progress and disturbing content such as blood letting and scarification. usually all that stuff is hidden but sometimes they have a pic or 2 on the front page). Lots of good stuff to look at on there. Its a big collection of tattoo and piercing stories and photos, as well as articles discussing everything from procedures to experimental modifications and reaction from the general public. Good stuff.

Also, as for placements, I have two friends with little tatoos right behind their ears (but not on the "behind" part of the ear itself!). They are always covered by hair, except that odd time you actually see them, in wich you say "woah, yoy have a tatoo there?!"
They are really tiny though, maybe one is maybe 2x2cm (a little outline of a star) and the other is 5x5 cm (the eye of horus). I find them to be really cool... And pretty hot too. I mean, they are very kissable, and as they are always hidden, also like a private element of some sort.

Okay, I have tats but having tats does not make everyone with tats attractive to you. Of course I'm not one to talk as I love tats and love Suicide Girls, but just figured I'd mention that. Some tats can be horrid and ugly. So ugly in fact that you would be embarrassed to walk next to someone with 'm.
Costs vary greatly on the shop you go to. Just make sure it is a quality shop. Mistakes can generally not be undone/covered up.
On the b/w thing, I hear it said often that "getting a small b/w tattoo" is for people who really are too afraid or unsure to get one in the first place. Not that they can't be nice looking, but as a first tat too many go for the 'simple tiny black speck' that becomes utterly meaningless and more for the "I got a tat! Ain't I outrageous!" factor. Tats last a lifetime, they are not for the "it's cool now" crowd.

For whatever you want to get: find a good flash copy, or have it drawn by someone or whatever. Then print it out and hang it up where you mainly sit, like at the PC. Keep it there for at least 2 months so you have to stare at it for that long. If you still like it afterward, don't want any change made, then go ahead and have it set. Alternatively, get a henna tat set, those won't last and you'll get an idea if you'll like it.For everyone:

Remember, you're 20, you might have to do with this thing you're getting for another 60 years. A 'geek' tat might not be so hot by then anymore. Again, tats last a lifetime. Will a Cog Gear still have significant meaning to you when you're 40.. 60.. 80? Would it have any meaning beyond "it looked kinda cool" in the first place?

A friend of mine has the Hyrule crest done between his shoulders in black and red and it looks really good. Impressive color work. I'd still never get it as a tattoo myself, I just don't feel that strong a connection to anything I'd want marked on my skin. I change my mind too often about my tastes in media. Still, if someone wants to express themselves via their skin, it can be a nice work of art if done right.
