On a student here, I actually saw a tramp stamp that said "Tramp" on the left side, "Stamp" on the right, with a little winged heart in between. Just wow.

I love this one because I imagine him stretching in line at the bank and getting tackled by security.
...or shot.

If you think that's good, check this one:

There'z someone who'z never flying again!

Well, as long as "Fuck you, ex-BF!" isn't an issue... I don't see why not ;)

Just don't go over the top. Something small and tasteful, as you said, works best. If you later find yourself in a situation where you'd like to get more, that's a different story. But don't start with a frickin' painting on your back or anything on your face ;) Also, I'd advice against a 'tramp stamp'. Shoulder or ankle are always nice places for something small or even teasing.

As for the design... until you find something that you know will look good in 20 years, then you have it :p

Personally, tattoos-wise: I dislike large tattoos. One or two small tattoos that have personal meaning, those are a-okay or even sexy in my book. Tribals and Chinese chiffres, not so much (the latter always make me wonder if it reads "Deepfried chicken in sweet-and-sour sauce. Cheap but filling" :D ).

For those of you who don't have tattoos:
1) If you saw a girl with a geek/video game tattoo, would you think she was totally ridiculous to the point where it could potentially be a deal-breaker? My asshole ex aside, I'd like to hear the general opinion on this.
As a nerd of the video game variety who does not care for tatoos really at all, I'd definitely say hell no to this question.

Tattoos aren't tasteful.

I only dislike tatoos on women, when they're showing during their wedding. It just looks like white trash to me. Maybe that's b/c all the white trash weddings I've been to, had a bride with some ridiculous tat.

I wouldn't ever stop my gf from getting one if she wanted it though. That's a bit jacked up.

I've thought about getting the Vitruvian Man or something science-related. I'd like one on the inside of my forearm. That's really the only place on me that isn't covered in hair.

^I thought this too, until my sister's best friend's wedding. She had a strapless dress with a lower back, surprisingly not gross-looking for a wedding dress, and you could see her back tattoo. But it's so pretty and intricate, and nothing weird or shocking, and it even kind of went with the color of the dress. I wish I had a picture. Of course it helps that she's so gorgeous she'd look good in a potato sack.

I didn't say that. I wouldn't mind getting another tattoo myself, but it seems like everyone has them anymore.

I never said mine was! I fully embrace that it's probably the most tasteless, stupidest tattoo on Earth, but I like it for that reason (and that I can cover it up). If my wife wouldn't divorce me over it, I'd get a full back portrait of this:
. I wish I was kidding. I love outrageously idiotic tattoos.

Just to add my own two-cents:

Tattoos on a girl are totally hot. Though, I'm a fan of body-mods in general, up to a point. You can go overboard, of course.

As for whether or not it might be a dealbreaker for some people: to be perfectly honest, if something as simple as a tattoo is really all it takes to turn someone completely off, then I don't think that person would be that good of a time anyway. Different tastes for different people, of course, but if it were me, that's my answer.

Don't get angel wings whatever you do. They're stupid in a totally different way.

I guess I'm not a fan of the "corporate" tattoo, such that the design is one that a million people already have. I fucking love Steve-O's tattoo.

I would want this:

But not on my arm like that. Because I could never settle on a place, I wouldn't get it.

I also dislike pain...

I'm not directly opposed to tattoos, but I don't think I'd date a girl with a tattoo. I mean, it wouldn't be a huge deal breaker, but I've always liked the "natural body" thang.

Chicks with tatts are a turn on for me. It's your body so if you want one go and get one. Don't worry about joe random liking it, only you have to like it.

As for design, I would probably go with the triforce. But thats just me saying that because I grew up on zelda. If I met a chick with a triforce tatt id be all over that.

As for the tip it isn't a requirement. They do make a profit off the tattoo so they won't starve if you dont give them some extra. But they dont have a huge profit margin so a tip is nice. Especially if they put in extra work (Full custom designs and things of that nature) or you think they did an exceptional job. Friend of mine was getting some piercings and passed out after the 2nd hole. One of the workers walked home (only about 2 mins away) and got a nice cold bottle of water instead of just giving him tap water, cold face towel and a pillow in case he was out for a long time. Big tip after that one.
Also tips leave an imprint in the artists mind, they have more chance of remembering you if you return in the future. They might be more inclined to squeeze you in sooner if it suits your schedule or maybe redraw your artwork sooner than some random off the street. Oh and tips don't need to be cash. If you connect with your artist and find something they like you can buy a small gift, or even bake a favourite food if they mention it. You might be lucky and get a Penny Arcade fan and you can cook them some dickerdoodles.

Most importantly is check out the studio before hand if you can. Make sure it's clean and you feel comfortable. Some people give me the creeps and I couldn't get any work done by them so I tend to meet them first and if I like them then I organize an appointment.

I cant comment on the price because I'm sure it's different in american than down under But we generally charge 50- 200 for small to medium tattoos depending on colour and detail. most expensive I have seen is a $650 full sleeve and shoulder. No space left blank, Lots of colour and lots of detail. Took over 2 years to finish so the price isnt that bad over time.

One last thing though, take lots of pictures if you can. Post them up here or even at www.bmezine.com (warning sometimes NSFW. Can contain some nudity, piercing in progress and disturbing content such as blood letting and scarification. usually all that stuff is hidden but sometimes they have a pic or 2 on the front page). Lots of good stuff to look at on there. Its a big collection of tattoo and piercing stories and photos, as well as articles discussing everything from procedures to experimental modifications and reaction from the general public. Good stuff.

Whoa....My little comment turned into an epic wall of text. Hope it goes well.

Also, as for placements, I have two friends with little tatoos right behind their ears (but not on the "behind" part of the ear itself!). They are always covered by hair, except that odd time you actually see them, in wich you say "woah, yoy have a tatoo there?!"
They are really tiny though, maybe one is maybe 2x2cm (a little outline of a star) and the other is 5x5 cm (the eye of horus). I find them to be really cool... And pretty hot too. I mean, they are very kissable, and as they are always hidden, also like a private element of some sort.

For a few years now, I've really wanted to get a tattoo of some sort. It would obviously be something small and easily-hidden, but I really think it would be awesome to get one. The biggest thing that stood in the way of me was my ex. He said tats on women are disgusting and he'd break up with me if I ever got one, so for years, I didn't. Now that we're broken up, my desire to get one is even stronger than before -- if anything, almost as a \"fuck you\" to him.

Now, I have three questions for you all:

For those of you who don't have tattoos:
1) If you saw a girl with a geek/video game tattoo, would you think she was totally ridiculous to the point where it could potentially be a deal-breaker? My asshole ex aside, I'd like to hear the general opinion on this.
Okay, I have tats but having tats does not make everyone with tats attractive to you. Of course I'm not one to talk as I love tats and love Suicide Girls, but just figured I'd mention that. Some tats can be horrid and ugly. So ugly in fact that you would be embarrassed to walk next to someone with 'm.

For those of you who do:
2) How much does a quality tattoo generally cost? I doubt it would be more than 3 in x 3 in, and probably would be b&w. I'm not worried about the pain factor, but I'd like to know how much you paid before I start trying to figure out where I'm going.
Costs vary greatly on the shop you go to. Just make sure it is a quality shop. Mistakes can generally not be undone/covered up.

On the b/w thing, I hear it said often that "getting a small b/w tattoo" is for people who really are too afraid or unsure to get one in the first place. Not that they can't be nice looking, but as a first tat too many go for the 'simple tiny black speck' that becomes utterly meaningless and more for the "I got a tat! Ain't I outrageous!" factor. Tats last a lifetime, they are not for the "it's cool now" crowd.

"I know! I'm gonna have the Chinese symbol for love/soup inked on my neck/butt!"

For everyone:
3) Any good ideas of things to permanently ink on my body? :D I'll probably get it on my upper back near one of my shoulders--it's one of the areas that'll be least affected when I get pregnant. I'm leaning toward either a Hylian crest/Triforce or a Gears Cog. But if you guys have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.
For whatever you want to get: find a good flash copy, or have it drawn by someone or whatever. Then print it out and hang it up where you mainly sit, like at the PC. Keep it there for at least 2 months so you have to stare at it for that long. If you still like it afterward, don't want any change made, then go ahead and have it set. Alternatively, get a henna tat set, those won't last and you'll get an idea if you'll like it.

Remember, you're 20, you might have to do with this thing you're getting for another 60 years. A 'geek' tat might not be so hot by then anymore. Again, tats last a lifetime. Will a Cog Gear still have significant meaning to you when you're 40.. 60.. 80? Would it have any meaning beyond "it looked kinda cool" in the first place?

If you want text, make ONE HUNDRED PERCENT SURE it is spelled correctly. God that looks idiotic when it's not.

Don't get anything above the cleavage, that is rarely done right.
(It can happen, but you will be paying a shitton of money too).
Not even Kat Von D has 'm, so just don't even try.

Photographic, again expect to be paying as shitton of monies becuse you want to have that done by an experience artist or you get this.

Funny tats are rarely funny 2 weeks later.

Another thought I had--I'm sure the \"fuck you\" to the ex is not your primary reason to do this, but if you feel like it might be, that's another good reason to wait.
^ This. Really, you'll want to be sure of what you get and why you get it. Unless you like scars you can't really get rid of it.

/high/tattoo4.jpg

some tattoos....too geeky.
<div align="center"> is also bad coding.

Oh! Another question: do you tip tattoo artists?
only if you plan on going back =)
Most shops (at least around here) will come with a quality guarantee. Meaning you can come back within the next 6 months for free touch ups. Some even do lifetime touch ups for free. Yes, I recommend tipping.
Funny tattoos are the only one's worth getting in my humble opinion. They never get old unless it's a pop-culture reference or some shit like that. Knock on my ass-lips all you want. When I moon someone at age 60, it'll still be hilarious.

I cannot wait to get my next one, though debating on which to do first, upper left arm, or expansion of back.

I got this Tattoo a couple of months ago.
wanna do a new one on my back.Thinking about a Girl on her knees, her hands raised to the heavens.and then on another date a sun between the shoulder blades.

This thread has been super helpful. I really appreciate all the feedback from you guys.

I think I'll probably go for it, but I'm going to wait until January. That'll give me a solid few weeks to really think about it (and another paycheck or two under my belt). I'm really leaning toward the triforce right now, as awesome as the cog would be. Whoever said that it has more timelessness is absolutely right.

The triforce is one of my favorite fucking things ever... BUT, as a tattoo.. it might be also a bit too... simple. Unless you added depth to each piece or whatever, I guess. That'd be cooler.

The Crest of Hyrule has the triforce in it and is, in my opinion, a much more appealing design for a tattoo:

A friend of mine has the Hyrule crest done between his shoulders in black and red and it looks really good. I'd recommend the crest over just the plain triforce if you were going to go that route.

Impressive color work. I'd still never get it as a tattoo myself, I just don't feel that strong a connection to anything I'd want marked on my skin. I change my mind too often about my tastes in media. Still, if someone wants to express themselves via their skin, it can be a nice work of art if done right.
