The Disney Thread: For Everything Concerning the House of Mouse

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
It’s been a fun ride so far. Goonies in space is definitely the vibe here. The show is pushing for a very 80s Amblin feel to it and I’m digging it. It’s PG but like an 80s PG. Quite a few fun Disney Easter Eggs here from Star Tours, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even Captain E.O.
Highly recommended.
Captain Hook (Peter Pan) too. The driod's name is SM-33.

Star Wars Skeleton Crew had a great episode last night. Made up for what I felt was a less than stellar episode with 4. Overall it’s a fun series and I’m looking forward to watching them all one after the other in a marathon once all available.

Yeah, I've heard for things and look forward to watching it, but I'm waiting till it's (almost) done.

Whenever I watch Skeleton Crew I feel like I’m in an ‘80s rumpus room, complete with a Tiffany ceiling lamp and a freezer filled with pudding pops. They struck the right vibe.

I've been pretty harsh on Disney Star Wars lately but Skeleton Crew was actually pretty solid in my opinion. Too bad no one watched it... the viewer numbers are so low. Sucks because Disney will think that Skeleton Crew is the bad product (it's not) and not previous Disney plus offerings that have not been great.

I am cautiously optimistic about Andor Season 2 though. I really hope they can capture the feel of Season 1.

I think word of mouth will help Skeleton Crew (like it did Andor) but yeah, those numbers weren't great for what was actually a pretty great show.

Spider-Man Voice Actor Says His ‘Biggest Fear’ Was the New Disney+ Series ‘Was Gonna Be Annoying and Woke’

“I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t,” Thames said. “I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”

I'm a lot less interested in the show now.

Why is he talking like he wasn't a boy or in high school?

Despite what the voice actor said, I watched the first two episodes and honestly it was a really good start on all fronts, and some of the curveballs to the classic comic tropes and MCU tropes are very interesting so far.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt - since I have never heard of the person and so on - he might have meant that his fear was it would be badly-written, forced, shoehorned-in woke for the sake of woke, which some series/shows have had problems with - affecting the quality of writing just to push in some modern day politics in a setting where it may not make sense (Spiderman takes place in the modern day so most woke subjects do have a place, but in, say, a historical drama, not necessarily...And not every group of friends needs to be a Power Rangers one-of-each-color-and-sexuality).
I mean, he may very well be a right wing dipshit who thinks anything woke is bad and that he's happy this series reinforces True American Masculinity (which wouldn't exactly fit Spidey). I don't know. If it wasn't his intention to come off as such, he chose his words poorly. But not every criticism of "annoying and woke" must necessarily mean annoying because a trace of woke.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh... I don't think there's any context where using woke as a negative is a good look. The article literally says
“Woke” is a blanket term for those who are actively aware and considerate of social justice issues such as those regarding race, gender and sexual identity. The word has also become a derogatory label used by those who detest diverse and inclusive media.
People have been screaming "Woke!" at the casting of Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, anything Miles Morales related, etc., and that's just in the Spider-verse. Having some 30-year-old white dude saying the show wasn't "annoying" by having inclusion, in a series that takes place in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, isn't a take I would defend.

A lot of non Americans don't quite understand that context yet, assume because they aren't flooded with it constantly (lucky them).

So let me clear things up.

"Phew, I was afraid it would include gay shit."

You feel the uncomfortable subtext in someone saying that? That's the tone you should read when someone says they're afraid it would be "woke"

And they'll be screaming "Woke!" at the casting of Colman Domingo as Norman Osborne, and Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborne in YFNSM. There's rumors that other characters in the series will have their race or gender changed from the comics, as well.

Hudson Thames is disrespecting his castmates by blowing the racist dogwhistle of "woke is bad!"

Next episodes of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are out today and...this is definitely one of the best Marvel shows ever.

Guess I'll be adding it to Plex then. #yarrr
The shame of it is this release timing/schedule is clearly the result of Disney trying to bury this show for whatever reason (my wild guess is this show has been in development hell forever and Disney thought it would be a flop now that we're in a political environment where acknowledging people exist that aren't straight white cis men is verboten).

I miss when big release days were Fridays. My nieces came over every Friday for WandaVision.
Remember when that was the case for movies in theaters too? Then we had midnight releases. Then we had Thursday releases, then even Wednesday releases.
So when do we push movie releases forward so much that we just end up back on Fridays again?
