The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

Interesting follow up. 3 hours after proposing my oldest friend, who I haven't seen in probably 6 years shows up, after driving down from ft worth. No notice. He's high out of his mind on meth, on the edge of a psychotic break talking about how he's getting messages from the TV. I take him to the VA, but the homeless vet program and the rehab was closed Sunday and today is a federal holiday.

Based on the shit he is saying to me I am pretty sure they will psych him for the next day at least. It would be irresponsible as hell to put him back on the street.

Nope. They discharge him within 2 fucking hours. I put him up in a hotel until Tuesday.

Not exactly an epic win but it was a weird ass footnote to the proposal. Also my fiancé was pretty cool about it.

Oh yeah we also cracked open a bottle of Stags Leap to celebrate.

Good on you, @Necronic! I'm glad you could help a friend. :)[DOUBLEPOST=1392657158,1392657000][/DOUBLEPOST]My epic news is that my sister totally killed it doing amateur standup this past weekend. She spoke really earnestly about her recent bouts with anxiety, so the jokes were all very natural and relatable. We were all really proud of her. This was an exercise in writing for her, but also in facing something that's been giving her a hard time--a kind of therapy. I think it helped her. People were laughing out loud the whole time, and strangers were coming up saying they were her favorite part of the night, and thanks for all the great stories. She wants to do it again, but she wants me to try it with her... hmm...

The secret to stand-up isn't the first night - it's the fourth or fifth time doing the material and getting the same reaction. I'm not discounting what she did because stand-up is fucking terrifying and HARD! I just don't want her to be disappointed if she tries to bottle lightning a second time if it doesn't happen. Seriously, whenever I do new stuff it kills and then after that it absolutely dies until I polish it up.

Stand-up is like writing in that you HAVE to be able to take rejection or you'll just go nuts. The main difference is when you're rejected as a writer it's not in front of a hundred people feeling sorry for you.

She's pretty realistic. She wasn't expecting applause at all. Just doing it was going to be the victory, but it turned out way better than she thought. It's a really safe place to do it; the audience at least applauds for everyone, and there's never any booing or heckling. The only guy who really didn't get a laugh and very little applause was reeeeaalllllly sexist. He wasn't funny... I think he just wanted a place to speak his mind where he thought he could get away with it. No one was amused, except for the drunk guy who spit out his beer at the phrase "huge vagina."

There are just a whole lot of things finishing for me this quarter.

Just submitted the final, fully formatted, fully edited version of my Honours thesis for my (second) Masters degree. Once my supervisor says we're good, I just need to print it and bind it and that part is done!

My last intensive class for the degree is next week - I will have 2 papers to write afterwards (due at the end of March) , then all the academic bits for the program will be done too!
My last residency evaluation is also due at the end of March, so after that meeting, all the work bits for the program will be done! And it will all be over except the convocation. Woop woop!

So I was super excited to find out that Brian Posehn was coming to Austin Comics this weekend to do a meet and greet with fans while buying comics etc. I knew I was going to go to the event and get to meet him which was already fantastic.

My wife tells me this morning before she heads out to work:
-You know how we're going to see Brian Posehn on Saturday at the comic shop?-

I immediately panicked, thinking that something has come up and we wouldn't be able to go.

-I got us tickets to see his stand up on Friday night. Love you, see you later!- and walked out the door.

I'm beside myself with glee.

Tax refund hit the bank, whoop!

A little back story: I made a boatload of money in 1999 and 2000 during the tech boom, then didn't work for the better part of 3 years after the crash. I ended up with a huge income tax liability, and arrears on child support from my first marriage. This year, all of that is finally paid off, which means I got to keep most of my tax refund.

With that refund, I got to:
  • Pay off 3 credit cards
  • Buy a new bedroom suit for the master bedroom--we'll move the stuff that's in there to the currently-empty guestroom. Just in time for the mother in law to visit.
  • Give $1000 cash money to my wife, which she intends to use to pay of 4 of her cards.
  • Have enough left over to put my car in the shop to fix some warped rotors and a broken side mirror (which happened a few weeks ago, heh)
  • Buy a new tinwhistle
  • Have a little left over to surprise my wife with a nice night out (which I'm not telling her about yet until all the money bleeds out of my account and I know how much is left).
So, sure, the huge deposit flew through my bank account like drinking hot coffee when you have a bad case of dysentery, but I feel very accomplished. :D

Too amazing for words:

His act the night before was killer too. Geeked out with him for a few minutes as the line he had for signing was huge! Still awesome he took the time for a quick snap though. Zero charge too. I mean I know he's not A list to Hollywood, but he's A list to me, love the guy. (Brian Posehn in case someone here doesn't know him)

Now I know for sure that you have met somebody that I know. Lisa, that works there at AB on the weekends. I wish I was there today, I just got in the big hardback of the 1st 12 issues of Deadpool.

The insanity that has been the purchasing department at my company for the past 6 months is finally over. We've increased staff, re-replaced the manager, and (most importantly) gotten one of the former purchasers to come down and train all of the staff we've added (myself included). So, what does this mean for me? Well... no more stress eating, no more smoking 3/4 of a pack of cigarettes a day, no more working from 6am to 6pm (or later), no more 6 day work weeks, no more constant stress, no more constant worry about shutting the shop down because I couldn't get all of the materials ordered on my own. All in all, work is fun again - and I can actually work normal hours.

Pretty much my daughter Leyla.

I mean, the last month she's been on a tear of progress. She likes eating most cereals, veggies and fruits (HATES SWEET POTATOES THOUGH) and is now crawling decently enough. On top of that she's trying to speak... this morning, my wife and I swore she might have said her first word, "Da Dak". Almost saying DA DA?

MY HEART MAN

Oh and here's another that should melt the hearts of some of you.

On my Samsung Smart TV in our bedroom, every morning we watch a few videos, like the wheels of the bus, twinkle twinkle little star and so forth. The last week or so, we've been listening to my favorite Disney song.

She LOVES it and starts to bounce up and down happily when Princess Jasmine starts singing.

:heart::heart::heart:

Two of my best friends in the world got engaged! They're on London, so going would be expensive, but we're really going to try. I started saving last year when the future groom told me that he was planning on proposing soon... And she wants me to be a bridesmaid! So I really really have to go! 2016, baby... plenty of time to prepare.

Just bought a new car! And I mean new, I've never ownd a new car before, its pretty neat.
I remember my father buying his first new car, a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice. He loved to drive that car, even though it only got about 16MPG. Still has it even though he hasn't run it in > 10 years.

Leyla just did her first ALL NIGHT. Like, a real one.

Went to bed at 7:30 PM as usual, then woke up at 7:15 AM. Had a feeding (I did it, left my wife sleeping) and went back to bed till 10:30 AM.

THIS... I can get used to. Usually she's up around 2 for a feeding.
