My brother-in-law's grandparents were from Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. sometime in the early 20th century. So, his dad is first generation, and they live near Boston. So, they're fairly entrenched in Irishness. All the cliches and tropes: drinking Guinness, pissing on the Brits, Kennedy-afficianodos, even Sinn Fein sympathizers. I tolerate it for the most part. I call b.s. on the terrorist sympathy, but it's all mostly harmless stupidity. My immediate family has no know connection to Ireland. We do have a connection 3 generations back to Scotland, but that's so far back it really doesn't mean anything. We have absolutely no Scottish traditions (other than Solar-intolerance). Since marrying my BIL (17 or so years ago), my sister has adopted Irish culture as her own. She decorates their house with Irish shite (ha). Somehow thinks that one of the "Magi" from the birth of Jesus story came from Ireland. I don't even know where she got that from. The DaVinci Code? Who knows. It's rubbish. Now, they are on their second vacation to Ireland. Her posts on FB about her Irish roots...SMH. Weirdo.
However, we really don't have any culture. Not really. No real family traditions, unless you include alcoholism and blind nationalism. So, I guess I understand a desire to have a rich cultural identity other than hillbilly. Even though, the Irish seem quite hillbilly to me.
