That's so weird, I have a tonne of friends who have had to travel to and from the States in the past few years (Americans going to school here, mostly), and every one of them says the Canadian border patrol just waves them through without a second glance while the American ones always have a hundred angry questions.

This was at least 12 years ago. Going back to America was basically just a wave and welcome back. In their defense, we were a group of 19 year olds who had no plans and no idea where we would be staying. Basically we went to drink legally and they knew it. Probably just wanted to give us hell. They even emptied my vehicle and went through everything. We stayed at a campground and didn't even bring a tent, which is why my friend passed out on the picnic table.

Real, 100% maple syrup, is fucking liquid gold.

Normally I'm too cheap, but I got a big bottle of it in grade 8 when I went to a cabin de sucre in Montreal, and I friggin' guarded it from the rest of my family, using only a drop every so often for very special occassions. Like a very fine liquer.

So I'm watching the IIHF U-18 Quarterfinal game between the USA and Canada. Naturally this means I'm wearing my Team Canada hockey jersey. I haven't eaten anything yet, so I decide it is sandwich time.

Enter the most difficult to open pickle jar in the history of mankind. It's an epic struggle of man vs pickle jar, with the pickle jar winning at first. Eventually, I pop the damn thing open, only by digging down deep and utilising every bit of my strength. It BURSTS open, spraying pickle brine all over the kitchenm and on my wonderful Team Canada Jersey.

So now my jersey is out on the balcony drying off after a heavy duty scrub in the sink. If Canada loses this game, it's all my fault.

I wouldn't say it compares to Kids in the Hall, just that it's the best since Kids in the Hall, cause really since Kids in the Hall what have we had?
I mean, there's this Hour Has 22 Minutes (Which I think nosedived the minute Rick Mercer left to do his own show)
Royal Canadian Air Farce, which I never found funny.
And there was Red Green.

Also, what do you make of this Wendy's "Poutition" to get poutine declared Canada's national dish? I take issue with it myself. First of all, it's Wendy's. They can butt out of what is declared by the federal government to be a national symbol. But also, I LOVE poutine, it's delicious, but you can't deny it: it's fast food. It'd be like the US declaring the hot dog their national dish.

We don't call that bacon. Only Americans call that Canadian bacon, and I think they do it just to annoy us.

What is ACTUALLY Canadian bacon, is a slightly differen cut, and is called "back bacon". But we don't call that "bacon" OR "Canadian bacon". It's usually also coated in a thin layer of peameal, and more commonly referred to simply as "peameal bacon".

What we actually call bacon, is bacon.

It definitely makes sense as something they'd put on the money. But I facepalm at people who thought it A) looked like the World Trade Centre towers, B) thought it looked pornagraphic and C) found it controversial because of A and B.

#147

And how.
I mean obviously we learned about Vimy Ridge in school, but the way school works now, idiots get through with minimal effort and without paying a bit of attention.

After I read Pierre Berton's "Vimy" I thought somebody really ought to make a movie about Vimy Ridge. It's an amazing story, really.

Also, I will confess that I never realized how BIG that memorial is.

It said that this was the winter of 46-47 (assuming it's true, which isn't ever really clear if it is), and according to wiki, his birthday was yesterday, may 13, 1937, so that only makes him 75, which is better than a 50/50 for still being alive.

It said that this was the winter of 46-47 (assuming it's true, which isn't ever really clear if it is), and according to wiki, his birthday was yesterday, may 13, 1937, so that only makes him 75, which is better than a 50/50 for still being alive.

Very cool though to have him there.
I gotta ask my brother in law more about it, because they MUST have played other stuff, or else this was the shortest Symphony orchestra ever.

While we're posting classic NFB shorts:

The whole gloating about the 1814 sacking of Washington, I don't get. I mean first of all it was still British North America at the time, not Canada, second it wasn't even troops stationed in Upper Canada that burned the White House, it was troops arriving from the Caribbean, and what's more, the sacking of Washington was in RESPONSE to the far more brutal sacking and razing of York (old Toronto), which is more or less why Ottawa wound up being the capital rather than Toronto.
So not only did Canada have no part to play in it, it was actually the English standing up for Canada getting it even worse.

OK, now here's the original version of the song "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate"

For reference to all non-Canadians that are (by some miracle) still reading this thread, Saskatchewan is a prairie province, landlocked.

And this is how I first ran across this song, as done via Everquest 2 Machinima. Warning: extreme geekiness:

And here's the guy who sang the one that the EQ2 version is done over top of. Captain Tractor's music video is awesome:

IIHF Update: Canada beat Belarus 5-1 this morning. My jersey had nothing to do with it, as I was dead asleep.

This ensures Canada is first in the H pool, and will play either France, Slovakia, Finland or the USA in the quarterfinals depending on how things go today.
Actually if I'm not mistaken, TSN hasn't updated the standings after the Slovakia/ France game, and it looks like it'll be Canada vs USA in the quarterfinal.
Meanwhile it looks like two Canadian defensemen will likely be suspended for illegal hits.

Read the article:
A vet would have to inspect an animal prior to slaughter to confirm it could not be safely transported, as well as determine if the animal is fit to serve as food. The vet will also certify the date of the slaughter and method.

A spokesperson for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency cited the example of an animal suffering from a broken leg.

“The cow could be slaughtered on the farm and after inspection at a federally registered establishment can be processed. This meat would be eligible for retail,” Guy Gravelle said.
You need to have a vet RIGHT THERE during the process, prior to slaughter. So it's not a "hey Frank, I killed it, can you help me throw it in the truck?" kind of deal. If the animal dies before the vet gets there, it's a no go.

Reading the headline, it's scary as hell. Reading the article, it's like "oh, that makes sense." At least IMO it does.

Maybe it's more that "why are Canadians as a whole paying for art, if they like it or not?" If somebody likes it, they buy it. If they don't, they don't. Don't make everybody be a part of "buying" it. Waste of money IMO. Not saying it's a waste to buy art as a whole (it's not), but not something governments should be spending money on.

#215

MindDetective

MindDetective

I seem to recall, once upon a time, that Canada put a fair amount of money into the arts in order to try and develop (and define) Canadian culture that was distinct from that of the USA. Such funding supported bands like the Bare Naked Ladies, for instance. As always, something like this boils down to the perspective you take on public arts: Is it for general encouragement of cultural exploration (and thus you accept the bad with the good) or do you focus on the specific artworks you are partially paying for. Neither perspective is wrong, inherently, but they are clearly disparate viewpoints of public-supported art.

Why are we paying for war, whether we like it or not? Or the oil pipeline? Why are we paying for healthcare whether we like it or not? Same argument can be made to virtually everything taxes go towards, and each area is going to mean more to some people than to others.

But what you, and Mr Harper, are missing is that arts is a BUSINESS, and in Canada, arts actually bring in a lot of revenue (For example, just about every American animated show on TV, if it's not animated in South Korea, is animated here, thanks to tax write-offs). Take those away, it will hurt an entire industry. Not to mention the films and TV shows shot in Vancouver and Toronto.

Take that to the smaller scale, and yeah you've got independent freelance sculptors and painters, graphic designers, etc, who are able to make ends meet thanks to government funding. How's that ANY different, tell me, than virtually anybody else who owns their own business getting to make write offs? Except of course that they get paid less for their work and are more often completely screwed by their contractors?

But if you're talking about government actually contracting freelance, that is a bit different. Still more important than you might realize.

They shouldn't. Just as virtually any other business shouldn't either. I'm sure that somebody could probably make a case as to why it's beneficial to subsidize some businesses for the good of all, but even that isn't a good enough reason. Government should be involved in certain areas because it's essential for them to be involved, not because it would be beneficial for them to be involved. That's the difference in my eyes.

Now with many industries, we (and other nations) have painted ourselves into a corner. If one nation gives subsidies, then almost all are "forced" to in order to compete. If none gave subsidies, it would all be a level playing field still. But even that is not a good enough reason IMO. If an industry can't survive without government handouts, then why are we hurting ourselves by supporting it?

Because one is lowering taxes, and the other is a hand-out. I think subsidies of ALL kinds are a load of crap. I'm not singling out the art industry.

Enh, I don't really feel like arguing the point. I'm really only bothered when people group arts alone as it's own seperate thing that is somehow lesser than and beneath other forms of business. Other than that, while I may disagree, the issues not as important to me. And really I don't completely disagree, in many cases the only reason this subsidizing exists is because it keeps it here rather than elsewhere.
And you're right, this is not the thread for political arguments. This is the thread for celebrating Canada (see HCGLNS' post above).

So with that in mind, how's everyone's Victoria Day weekend? I don't really have any plans for it unfortunately. Going to be working through it. It's based on the "Black Devils" The WW2 unit made up of Canadians and Americans that basically amounts to the world's first special forces team.
It takes some liberties with history, most amusingly turning the Americans from exceptional soldiers who were specially selected just as the Canadians were, into scoundrels cleared out of military prisons.

Now that I am settled in to my apartment in the GTA's taint (It ain't Mississauga, it ain't Brampton and it ain't Etobicoke.), and now that Gusto has his own sweet ride, I think we need to actually make an effort to make sure a GTA Halforums meet up happens.

Not sure where in Brampton Vrii lives, but I'm like two blocks south of the Mississauga/ Brampton border. I know Waterloo's a fair ways away from here, but I think since transportation is definitely a hurdle regardless of where we go, somewhere near Vrii and I is probably best, because at least that way you'd have a place to stay the night.

Is Made Ya Blush still around or has she abandoned the forum?
I'm in Toronto sometime this summer... Hopefully I can meet some/all of y'all

You may actually be fairly close by. I'm in Malton.

I strongly suggest that either we venture into Brampton, or we go all out and head to Toronto, because there aren't any bars or anything anywhere near me (There are two strip joints though. I found them while walking around looking for somewhere to watch game 5 of the playoffs)

I seem to be the only one who's been following this story, nonetheless, I had to post this:
Canadian boxer Mary Spencer has earned a wildcard to box at the London 2012 Olympics, reports say.
http://www.thestar.com/sports/londo...given-wildcard-to-box-at-olympics-reports-say

After a month of waiting and uncertainty, Canadian boxer Mary Spencer was given a second chance on Monday to compete at the Olympics, winning a wildcard spot at the Games in London following an extended round of deliberation from an international panel.
http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012...mary-spencer-will-get-to-compete-at-olympics/

For her own part, Spencer has spent the past four weeks preparing for the Games, despite the uncertainty that surrounded her own participation.
"I'm not waiting to hear about a wild card....I'm training for the Olympics!!" She posted to her Twitter account, late last month.

For the most part Ontario= click in the general vicinity of either Toronto or Ottawa. It is when I get to BC that I fail.)

There was a piece on NPR last night about The War of 1812, and how it usually gets all of a couple days at most in an American classroom, and how it gets weeks to months in a Canadian one. It reminded me of Bison's quote from Street Fighter (modified here):

For you, the day America graced your country was one of the most important periods of your history. But for us, it was Tuesday

#308

Frank

Frank

It doesn't at all get weeks to months in our classrooms either but that could also be because I'm a western Canadian and we don't give a fuck about what Ontario finds important.

#309

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

4 days. I had it for 4 days. Though this year is the 200th anniversary so it has been reopened more than a jar of jam.

#310

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

I think that depends on where you go to school. But I don't remember learning about it at all in high school (High school Canadian History we mostly talked about the involvement of Canada in WW1 and WW2), and in elementary school I remember learning more about Confederacy, the Red River Rebellion, and the 7 years war than the war of 1812. (Ontario)
But we definitely bestow more significance on it than the Americans do, anyway.

#311

Necronic

Necronic

Maybe it was just for Ontario, can't remember if the show specified that.

#312

Vrii

Vrii

It got mentioned in passing here, I think. Days would be a big stretch, weeks to months...that's a joke.

#313

Necronic

Necronic

Huh, must have been a bad report, which is surprising coming from NPR. Granted it's an American show trying to understand our whacky northern neighbours so the opportunities for confusion abound, but still, NPR.

Edit: Here's the original story (they say 2 days for America, 3-4 weeks for canada)

http://www.wbur.org/npr/155308632/teaching-the-war-of-1812-different-in-u-s-canada

They also refer to it as "the very fulcrum of national history" for Canada.

#314

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Schools this year probably are spending weeks to months on it. But that's because as mentioned its the 200 year anniversary.

#315

Necronic

Necronic

ahhhh.

Still though Canada is Chun Li to our M Bison.

#316

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Yeah, its definitely given more significance here, I dont' know if I'd say it was the "fulcrum" of our history. I mean it really only pertains to Quebec and Ontario. I'd definitely still say WW1, particularly the battle of Vimy Ridge, was more monumental to Canadian history.

It is also pretty widely taught that it was the British who won the war, though anyone who actually bothers to read into it a little more knows that it was a weird sort of war where both sides basically got more or less what they wanted out of it. The British backed off the American's trade routes, and the Americans stopped trying to invade (Though they continued to encourage the Fenian raids for a long while after that).
Like NPR said, it was the first Nations who really lost out.

And the burning of the White House, I've talked about here before, is also pretty poorly represented in Canadian history. We didn't even learn it was retaliation for the razing of york in my school. I learned that part years later.

Never heard of Tecumseh either, but Laura Secord yes, she's been called the Canadian Paul Revere.

That guy sounds like he goes way more in depth about it than we did in my school. I'm sure curriculum's changed a lot since I was in elementary though.

The number of Canadian citizens living abroad is 2.8million. #354

STOP MIXING YOUR UNITS!

:aaah:
I wasn't. It was a poorly planned, poorly executed joke. I never mix units with temperature. The Farennheit system confuses the hell out of me. My dad still uses the imperial system for temperature and it confuses me.

"What's it like out today?"
"well it's 70 degrees out."
"So.... do I need a coat? Can I wear shorts? I have no idea what that means."

It was 29C here yesterday. The joke was I was rubbing HCGLNS face in how much cooler it was here, even though it was still incredibly hot. This itself was combined with a joke about stereotypical perceptions of how cold it is here.

To clarify for you Yanks: the difference in temperature was 89.6 degrees Farennheit where HCGLNS is and 84.2 where I am. (I had to look this up)

3 degrees celsius difference is nothing. Once the temperature gets above 27, I don't care what it is, it's too hot.[DOUBLEPOST=1341239710][/DOUBLEPOST]
My calender says it Canada Day today. What can I, as an American, do to show unity and support for my Canadian Halforums compatriots?

Wouldn't that just be onion rings covered with cheese and gravy? Like, a whole different food. I cant just take french toast and say "well, i dont use the eggs or bread, but i put milk with a bowl of cereal. Basically the same thing."

#416

Well, using regular cheese grated onto fries and gravy shouldn't be called poutine either and it fucking grinds my gears every time one of these fuckmouth pizzarias does it.

MORE KATE BEATON!
(Also, I was wrong, the attack on Washington wasn't performed by troops stationed in the Caribbean. It actually is relevant to Canada after all; the attack came from Halifax, by way of Bermuda.)
****edit: DAMMIT Photobucket resized the image. Hold on, I got this.

***DOUBLE EDIT: Even after cutting the image up into 5 chunks, and uploading seperately, Photobucket still resized them to the point of being too small to read. I give up.

It seems to me that Ontarians seem to care the most about the War of 1812. My dad for example was born and raised around Picton and he goes on and on about it, while I, a born in the territories and raised in Alberta, couldn't give a hoot.

This is based on a 2 person sample size.

Definitely. I don't think it really effected any other provinces (Except, I guess Nova Scotia, now I know) and the country was still BNA back then. But it still pops up as a bragging thing, mostly among Canadian comedians.

I'm trying to update the map, and too many of you live in too close proximity to eachother out west, especially since Dirona and (I'm assuming since you said "we" and mentioned before that you lived together) Eriol moved to Kelowna recently.

I don't know how I'm going to organize this.

You should have moved to PEI instead.
Or Nunavut. Plenty of space there.
*Edit: Managed it. Until I find out where in Saskatchewan Emyrs is located, this works. I can basically move that avatar around wherever right now.

Since I had to extend the edges out anyway, it made room to move us Southern Ontarians around, and so now Gusto is all on his lonesome, since Kitchener/Waterloo is not actually part of the GTA. Slightly more accurate now.

For whatever reason, I can't upload directly to halforums anymore. It won't recognize any image files when I try. They simply don't appear in the file browser. So I had to upload through imgur, cause photobucket kept resizing it.

I'm sorry, but no. There's just not enough room on the map for another GTA member. You;ll have to move back to Newfoundland from whence you came, or alternatively, head north to one of the territories. If you'd like, you can try PEI as we do have a lack of members there, and I'll give the application some thought, but there isn't much space on the east side of the map either so I can't guarantee you a place there.

The Avro Arrow one has some personal signifigance for me - my grandfather worked there as a draftsman (as did his sister), so I grew up with stories of that project.

Having lived in Halifax, albeit briefly, the explosion one is... what Adam said, chilling.

#487

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

The Halifax explosion one is probably the best one. I always liked the Sam Steele one too. Sam Steele was a badass.

The Avro Arrow one was pieced together with scenes from the made for TV movie "The Arrow", which is actually a pretty decent docu-drama. I definitely recommend it.

#488

Eriol

Eriol

I actually knew the guy who built (and flew) the model plane used for the in-air shots of the Arrow for that movie. The guy owned one of the hobby shops in Calgary where I lived at the time, and I flew model airplanes at the time, and it's a fairly small community, so... it was kinda cool. I actually got to see some of the "spare" jigs and such (his workshop was right behind the store, he lived in the building too) because he had to make more than one for the movie. It was also kinda cool hearing about how he had to control it from a helicopter, because they needed it flying high enough for some of the shots, whereas usually with models you just control from the ground. Cool stories from the guy.

You are lucky. It was passable in the first season (and that's a big passable) but then it just kept getting worse and worse as the series went on. It was made by the same people who did 6teen and Stoked so...yeah no surprise in the quality there.

My friends are on honeymoon in Nova Scotia. Their status updates took a turn as soon as they left Halifax for Lunenburg. According to them, Lunenburg is just creepy as hell.
In Halifax:
This place rocks.
But then...
Arrived in Lunenburg. What a weird place.
In Lunenberg. This place is not great.
We are leaving tomorrow. None of the locals know any way to leave the town, and they all keep asking where we are sleeping. I'm not sure if it's a full moon or not, but I'm just getting a bad vibe off this place.
We think we've figured out where to catch a bus now. We're taking off before first light.I have first watch.
We made it out of Lunenberg alive! The locals made a few attempts to stop us, but we managed to duck them by hiding in a closed down pizzeria
Then, from back in Halifax,
Despite escaping Lunenberg, we were approached on the street by a guy who says "I saw you two yesterday! You were standing outside of the Foodland in Lunenberg!"
Then, don't we run into the same guy again at the restaurant where we have supper.
Any maritimers want to weigh in? What's so creepy in Lunenburg?
