So happy to see this much suit work and animatronics. 5 days until Japan's release, so probably 6 days until I watch it with English subtitles through ... means ... and then I look forward to seeing it in theaters whenever Funimation gets around to that.

When Funimation released the Attack on Titan live-action movies, it went to AMC and Loews theaters, so if you have any of them nearby, there's a good chance you'll get it.

I'm willing to make a trip for it, even if I have to go into the city to some art house theater, but hopefully it won't be that way. It'll be the first Toho Godzilla movie I've seen in theaters.

Y'know, one thing about Mcavoy I've always liked is how good he is with accents. His natural accent is Scottish, he does a great Queen's English and American accent too. I'm looking forward to hearing how he uses his voice with the different personalities.

Good song, but if you are going to have music in your movies, write it yourself instead of stealing classics to repurpose. That's when we get things like "Smells Like Team Spirit" in Peter Pan.

I heard this was the only good scene of that movie from a few different people!

also, you might love the climax of Pitch Perfect 2.

It's one thing when Kung-fu Panda uses Kung-fu Fighting because they're being silly on purpose (including the song), but this...

Strongly disagree. First off, the Smells Like TEEN Spirit part of Pan was the only good scene in the movie, and managed to sum up the crossing of worlds by juxtaposing a part of modern culture onto these strange, otherworldly pirates.

The reason to use popular songs in a movie is to evoke the emotion involved in that music, transform it, and make it apply to the scene it is accompanying. Music more than anything else occupies our collective cultural hivemind, it makes connections in our brains and brings new meanings.

That's different. He's not performing it. What I'm talking about is when there are people in movies that are singing for whatever reason and instead of doing an original number, they break out in a classic song. Soundtracks - which this is - are fine.

A few examples of this have already been mentioned:

  • Moulin Rouge (I so wanted to put Rogue but wasn't sure people would have thought it was a joke)
  • Peter Pan - Where they sing Smells Like Teen Spirit...for some reason.
  • Neverending Story III - Born To Be Wild.

Guardians of the Galaxy uses the classic songs as part of the plot, not shoe-horning it in just to have a song people know.

Except the Smells Like Teen Spirit part of Pan was added in entirely for fun, due to some things that happened at the "pirate boot camp" every had to attend before filming. There is no deeper meaning to it, nor was it present in the script. It was added in merely because it was fun.

It was weird, out of place, and stupid. Maybe it was fun to make but it was not fun to watch. Of course, neither was any of the rest of the movie, but there it is.

I think it depends on how it's done. I hated the way it was used in, for example, A Knight's Tale. It didn't fit the feel of the rest movie. Meanwhile, The Book of Life used a mix of original songs and modern pop, but the cover songs were done in a way that felt in-place with the rest of the movie. Moulin Rouge didn't bother me because the entire film was an anachronistic fairy tale for adults.

Knight's Tale was great, as was Moulin Rouge!
Both did their own thing, straight up from the start and didn't back off from this!
The moment Knight's Tale started with 'We Will Rock You' I know what was going on and took it for that.
Gets even better with the director's commentary, just saying! "Here they're, our heroes! They're young, they're wild, they're wearing leather coats!" :)

I'm aware of that, even if it wasn't intentional, the accidental meaning was the only part of the movie I enjoyed.
