The Video Game Kickstarter Thread of the Future of Passing the Risk to the Consumer

Just saw some of these posts from Gas about Carmageddon. Best fucking game ever. I had so much fun playing this game!

The guy in the video sucks, though.

Welp, we knew this was coming after Irrational shut down earlier this year. I may actually back it, even if my computer wouldn't be able to run it. It'd be there for me to play whenever I get a good gaming computer.

The best thing about Kickstarter is now any game developer can circumvent the investment period of production by taking their game idea directly to the public, who can help it succeed or fail by it's merits instead of having to appeal to a board of marketers who are wondering if they can make their money back and more. This means new players have a chance to get in and established players can put out the art projects they actually got into the industry to make.

The worst part is that ALL OF THEM seem to want to do this. Which, really, just shows that the industry itself needs a good ol' reboot.

Last time I checked, God didn't need us to give him 550k to make a game. He could have easily pitched this to a studio and gotten it made in exchange for working on another IP.
Ken Levine isn't at all involved with this game, so... I guess Ken Levine as God confirmed?

Now I'm going to have to look up who Ken Levine is.
Game designer behind System Shock 2, Bioshock, and Bioshock Infinite. Also the founder of Irrational Games, and the closer of the same company, which lead to former employees forming their own studio to make this game in question.

I've discovered that artistic talent and assholeishness often go together. Not always, mind you, but it seems pretty common.
Well, he even failed in the talent department when it came to Burial at Sea, so his dick can rot off in that dead horse for all he deserves. Take people's money for a DLC pass over a year in advance, use it to make a challenge mode and two shitty adventure bits that not only don't deliver what the pass promised, but shit all over the past good games, and then make that the final project his team works on before he renders them all unemployed.

Fucking ass. I wish I'd "acquired" his stuff, or bought it used so he saw no profit. But nope, like a fucking puppet, I bought them all.

Man, you really hate Burial at Sea.

Here's the thing about season passes, they don't stop being for sale. There's absolutely no reason to buy one before the DLC is actually available. Now, if the first DLC comes out, and it looks good? Good enough to warrant buying the season pass? Go for it, but why buy it before?

In fact, I've noticed that season passes tend to go on sale right around the time the first round of DLC comes out for major titles, to try and get more people to buy them.

The idea was that you'd get $30 of DLC for $20. Little did I know that the "free" one was going to be a dumb challenge thing, and the two I paid for would suck. I'd only purchased one season pass before that--all of L.A. Noire's DLC for $10. That was totally worth it; every one of those extra missions was enjoyable. I figured, one for Bioshock? That couldn't go wrong.

But it did. I was wrong.

I know the idea behind season passes, and I'm sorry you got burned, I've been burned too. My point is, $20 for $30 worth of DLC is an ok deal if you want the DLC, but you can wait until the DLC is out and still get that same deal (or better, since the passes often go on sale as well). There's no reason to buy it early, unless you absolutely need whatever shitty skin they're offering for a 'pre-order exclusive' that will eventually become free anyway.

Except everyone one of L.A. Noire's missions was done AT LAUNCH, because they were divied out to the various retailers as store-exclusives for a few weeks. Considering how fucking long it took to make anything for that game, it's a safe bet it was stuff carved out of the game to appease the retailers.

For games like that, I know better.

Though I did buy the Mario Kart 8 DLC packs, so maybe I haven't learn so much.[DOUBLEPOST=1412827718,1412827687][/DOUBLEPOST]

Didn't know that. I guess that's why they were good then. Yay gaming industry.

In the meantime, Ron Gilbert is back with a spiritual successor to Maniac Mansion:

It's kind of funny this comes out in light of Double Fine's still unfinished Broken Age. I think this is closer to what people wanted out of the project. Heck, it could be closer to what Ron Gilbert had in mind when he originally signed up for Broken Age.

At this point there is/have been three crowdfunding rounds for Mighty No. 9, and I'm starting to see why Capcom started giving Inafune shit and closing down his projects.

Yeah, that does seem kind of ridiculous. Has it even been in open alpha yet?

You had to donate a certain amount on one of the rounds (it's $80 right now) in order to get access to the alpha/beta builds. But yes, at least two complete stages (and bosses) have been tested by the community and that was as of a few months ago.

As for the multiple rounds... it got a second round because apparently most of the Japanese fans didn't "get" how Kickstarter works and were sending in emails complaining on how they wanted to help but now couldn't. The 3rd round is entirely because they want to do a rival character (like Bass) and give him a proper stage, which wasn't in the initial budget (and they don't know if they'll have enough left-over to do it as DLC right now). That said, you can't get most of the cool rewards anymore (physical boxes, manuals) because they didn't feel it would be fair to the original backers if you could.

Isn't that the game where the community manager happens to be an employee's girlfriend who never played a Megaman game before getting the job?
