The Video Game Kickstarter Thread of the Future of Passing the Risk to the Consumer

All they need to do is redesign a single character, which isn't a huge deal. However, I don't know how this affects it's finances.

I backed Underworld Ascending. I'm weak, I know. But when I saw how it was old school guys developing it from Looking Glass and other similar now-dead dev houses, that clinched it for me.

So, guys, in case anyone interested wasn't aware yet, STRAFE is looking like it won't make it's KS goal, sadly....

Anyone want to try and help them along? Procedurally-generated DOOM/Quake-like....Could be a really fun diversion game :)

Mighty No. 9 is still set for April 2015 release date, and ow that we're down a week into April, they might want to narrow down something more exact.

Mighty No. 9 update

That PR woman the GamerGaters hate has resigned, not that it matters now with the release pending ... speaking of which, zero word on the release date. Probably best to assume it won't be April anymore, which seems odd to me since they said the game was practically done back in January. My guess would be that it's taking longer than they expected to do all the additional stuff that came up in the extra fund runs.

I just came to post this. I will say that a lot more people than the GGs hated Dina because of her rampant abuse of the her powers, to the point that a lot of the fan community had left the site and gone to third party ones where she didn't have any authority. She really just wasn't a very good community manager if members of the community were making their own pages just so they didn't have to deal with her. This was a long time coming.

As for the delays... one of the big things holding it back has been the localization (they didn't have completely scripts until a few months ago) and integrating backer rewards into the game. The past few updates have been about them putting backer stuff in the game (like the backer portraits in City Hall).

Mighty No. 9 has a release date: September 15th for US, September 18th for everyone else. This is technically a delay in release, but it's getting done so they can do more language options and to finish out the Ray DLC.

They also announced a physical release... all of which have the RAY DLC included, which is a paid dlc for digital copies. Backers get it for free as thanks.

That's a big delay for a simple platformer.

Well, guess I don't need to budget for that in my summer gaming funds.

We're getting something 7 more language options. Originally it was just going to be English (and English voices) and a Jap translation. Now, thanks to additional last minute funding, we're getting...

- Japanese voice option
- French voice option and translation
- Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese translation
- Ray DLC - An extra level with a boss AND a new playable character

So really, it's a lot of work. They have to build Ray from the ground up and balance her, as well as get all of that translation work done, then get the betas out to the backers for testing before they start printing disks.

I get the language part, but they seem to be delayed for Ray so that rather than it be DLC, it's day-one DLC.

I just got an email telling me that the OUYA download codes are available for Broken Age... I guess that was a stretch goal?

Wow, you guys remember when the OUYA was a thing? That seems so much longer than just 3 years ago.

It's Day 1 DLC that everyone who's donated to the project gets for free. It's also something they've said they wanted done at launch for months but wasn't planned Day 1, so it wasn't originally in the goals... the only reason we're getting it AT ALL is because of the donators (which is why they get it for free).

So honestly? In this case? I'm okay with Day 1 DLC. They've been upfront about it the entire time.

I understand; I just don't think it makes sense to delay the launch on a finished game for that. It's DLC; the people who get it for free will get it for free either way and the people who don't will either pay for it or not. Do they think people won't care anymore in five months? ... I mean, that might be what happens. People still care about Shovel Knight because that was an excellent game, but we won't know how Mighty No. 9 is actually received until it comes out. It might not be that great. So maybe financially it makes sense.

Well it makes sense in that they are going to include it on all the physical copies, which is where they expect to make their money... so really, this isn't Day 1 DLC... it's a way to work AROUND Day 1 DLC. The only people who don't get it out of box are the people who pick it up on PC via Steam/GOG, Vita, and 3DS. But that's okay because they get the game cheaper anyway.

It's also possible that part of the delay is because the Mighty No. 9 cartoon series needs more time to get finished and they've already said that they wanted both to be launched at the same time... but personally, what I think is going on is they changed translation companies (which is part of the reason the old community manager was forced out) after the terribad job they did on Gunvolt and the new company wants to do an all new one.

They've apparently done so poorly that they're now looking for someone to buy them out, too.

Synching up with the cartoon makes sense, and also destroys my concern about relevancy. They're intent on building a franchise with this, so that also makes sense why they'd want to have a physical copy out there, something people can see in stores and kids can ask for.

But I still want Mega Man to live :(.

He JUST got a mobile title that is apparently pretty decent... but it's only for sale in South Korea. Look up Rockman GoGo! and be a bit underwhelmed.

As for main franchise titles... Kenjia Inafune recently mentioned something about Capcom wanting to do a new game and wished them luck with it because Mega Man's a great character, but then also said that the character is only as good as the people behind, basically telling management at Capcom they couldn't find cash in a bank.

I bet there are other people who could make a good Mega Man game; probably even ones who are less frustrating to work with than Inafune.

Whether Capcom could get their act together and make use of such people is another story.

Yeah, if it ever gets finished and released. Not a great track record for KS games.
Or just Kickstarter projects in general, my brothers friends funded a relish company through it- NEVER did anything with it. EITHER WAY- cautious optimism activated.

Yooka Laylee's up to 2.1 million USD with 40 days to go. I'd be surprised if they didn't make it to nearly 3m by the due date.

If they don't get the game out in a timely fashion it'll be the biggest blunder of the decade at this rate.

A video game kickstarter that earns way more than it asked for failing to deliver on their promises? INCONCEIVABLE!

Yeah, it's not out of the ordinary, but this one's got a lot of nostalgia-ridden 90's kids backing it and some currently famous devs like Grant Kirkhope contributing. On top of that there's the whole group of folks who're going to see this as the real Banjo-Threeie as opposed to Nuts 'n' Bolts. The devs have a lot riding on this KS and fucking it up would be pretty big news in the industry.
