TIL: Today I Learned

TIL that a friend of mine from secondary school, who unfortunately I haven't spoken to much afterwards, has gone on to become an actor. Just bit parts so far, but he played one of the ronin in 47 Ronin, a gang member in Kick-Ass 2, and a lab worker in Spectre. He was also Donnie Yen's stand-in in Rogue One.

That's pretty cool.

Everybody knows there's been some censhorship of cartoons over the years. One in particular I remember, is "Hare Ribbin." The ending I remember from my childhood was, when the dog laments "I wish I was dead!" Bugs hams "Do ya mean it?" and hands him a pistol, and the dog proceeds to shoot himself (of course, as the shot irises out, he gets back up and quips "This shouldn't even happen to a dog"). When I was older, I saw the cartoon again, except it cut off straight to the closing card immediately after Bugs' line ("Do ya mean it?" Dat-dada-da da da da da da da da daaaaaa. dat dat dat daaa da daaaaaa!) I thought it was kind of lame.

TIL, that actually wasn't even the first censorship of Hare Ribbin.

In the original end, after Bugs asks "Do ya mean it," Bugs shoves the pistol in the dog's mouth and pulls the trigger. Blam. The remainder closes out the same. But still... that's a little different, and apparently too dark for public consumption.

In this case, I can respect the decision, because I (like the cartoon's creators, apparently) think that Bugs pulling the trigger is out of character. Bugs isn't a killer. Bugs doesn't use guns (except to ineffective but comedic effect). Bugs uses guile, and tricks his enemies into foiling themselves. It's much more in keeping with Bugs' character to provide the means by which his adversary undoes himself than it would be for Bugs to be the executioner.

Remember when I suggested one of the problems Spider-Man movies have is that they can only hold back the dancing for so long?

Also,

My first introduction to "...waitaminit, they cut something!" was the first time I saw them cut off the end of the Sheriff of Nottingham's realization that he has been tricked into building in the King's rose garden.

I remember that one too. "Oooooh I hate myself!" SNIP ... Hey wait, he's supposed to hit himself on the head with a hammer there! Like 3 times. "NOPE IMITATABLE ACT OR SOMETHING LOL IDUNO"

TIL: that Piggy Wiggly is a real store and not just one of those fake names used in movies, like 555-5555 is used for phone numbers.

That was the primary grocery chain where I grew up until the late 80s, I'd say. The were actually the first self-service grocery chain. There's some dispute over whether it or King Kullen was the first true supermarket, but Piggly Wiggly was the first to have the setup with the aisles and the checkout counter at the front.

TIL that not only are the Pistons moving to the new arena the Red Wings are building, but the Palace may be torn down?
Well, yeah. The Palace is no doubt sitting on prime real estate, just begging for a new condo development.

Or is that just a Toronto thing?

(I'm amazed that Maple Leaf Gardens wasn't knocked down the moment the Leafs stopped playing there)

The Silverdome hasn't even finished being torn down yet, and they're already talking about demolishing The Palace? Pontiac and Auburn Hills must be furious.

TIL "Koyaanisqatsi" was used in an episode of Scrubs, of all places.
TIAL that "Bone Collector" is the name of a TV show, and not the name for a line of outdoor wear or gun accessories or the like. I keep seeing the logo in rear windows of pickups, now I know why.
