I'll be honest--I can't help but be insulted when someone uses the phrase, "You can't possibly understand". I can understand it perfectly well. I just have very strong reservations about believing it on the basis of my own observations.
I can understand that, but at the same time, unless we are experiencing it or be "in it" sometimes it is harder to understand.

Now of course there are times like when my parents goes "you don't know the real world, so you can't possibly understand" that is a bit different since I am 38 years old, own my own home, married, and keep up with the world. I know the real world that I experience thus far. I may not know the real world of underground drug lord, or the real world of espionage, or real world of celeberties.

I think there are some psychological aspect that I will never understand like why does psycho killers enjoy and do what they do, why does people follow blindly with Kardashen family, why does people believe Jesus is the son of God back then but won't believe if someone said they are son of God now?

Yes, we can justify by what WE believe and what WE understand, but unless we ARE in those group, we will never truly understand on their level.

I love that when I come into a thread on HF I will find it goes exactly where I expect it to go and yet surprise me in how it gets there :p

"Hell hath no fury..." ;)
If I am following the thread right, the proper phrasing for the end of that sentence is

"...like a gender-exists-only-as-a-social-construct-and-does-not-exist-purely-in-a-binary-fashion-instead-a-complex-dynamic-with-emotional-psychological-physical-and-sexual-components scorned."

Yeah, evidently this thread was started so Krisken would know that my poppy was a vagina, not a penis, and now we're here.
O brave new world! That has such people in it!

Smile, Krisken. You've raised the entertainment value of this place by a good 10%. And while they're busy arguing with each other, we can slip in, mug them for their valuables, and get away before they wake up.

For the record: I did not say "You cannot possibly understand". That is a horrible rephrasing of what I actually said to make it come across a lot more hostile then intended.
I just used the general phrasing that usually gets used, which I personally find less hostile than "You may not understand it, but...", for the record, which I read as a patronizing head-pat.

Also for the record, I have no problem with anyone being truly gender neutral or gender-free or whatever. But since we were speaking from personal experience, the people I know who claim to be such, are also the same crowd who tends to flock to anything fringe or controversial for the sake of it.

Much like I can't help but be insulted when someone comments the way you did on a subject they cannot comprehend due to the only way to comprehend it, is to live it.

I'm sure given your salacious stories, there's a number of fellas that wouldn't mind living your life.

I had a feeling this was how the thread was going to go. Not the Evangelion derail, but everything else.

I knew someone would bite.
I don't think anyone is surprised to be bitten by Sheki, just the time and place usually come as a shock.

"You can't comprehend unless you've lived it" is a weak statement with no logical basis. I comprehend things everyday that I am not, or that I don't do. If I didn't, I would be a jellyfish. Where is the arbitrary line between things you have to live to understand, and things you can understand without living?

Frankly, it's as offensive to me as anything you find offensive. Questioning something is in no way tantamount to misunderstanding it. I get the idea, whether you think I do or not. Doesn't mean it doesn't feel a certain way to me.

What could possibly be offensive about devaluing or outright dismissing something that is at the core of another person's life experience?

For my own part, I've never suffered any particular confusion about my gender or sexuality, but that doesn't mean I think it's not a major conflict in some people's psyche. I don't know what that's like, and I don't really want to. But I can't think that having the "you" that you think you are, being completely at odds with who you appear to be to the world, is easy.

You're right. My original statement was probably a bit crass. I retract that, because frankly, as I said, I couldn't care less if you are or aren't genderqueer. My statement wasn't intended to devalue, it was more a comment on my personal experience with people I've met who self-identify as such. They tend to be the same Che shirt wearing, homeopathic medicine crowd that eschews things they think are societal impositions by choice. I in no way meant to imply anything negative about genderqueer, because I truly don't care if someone is. One way or the other.

Or the other, other, or other.

One way or the other or any one of the other others.

Damnit Krisken, you've made an enemy this day.
