What's your gender?

Since people have been awful confused about some of our genders, I thought I would post this thread with the poll so people can go back to it if needed.

iirc, 5-12 are mass produced models, and use dummy plugs based on Kaworu. No idea if they actually have souls, since syncing up with a pilot isn't much of a concern.

The "nonbinary gender" thing is hogwash. It's easy - which pronoun do you not want to be called - "he" or "she?" Note - I'm not saying "born with a penis = MAN FOREVER," I'm saying that when you REALLY pin people down, they really do identify with one or the other.

No, conventional wisdom is incorrect - "bastard" is not the masculine form of "bitch," it is a unisex aspersion cast upon parentage.

Doesn't really work in languages that don't make that gender distinction - although some comedians might suggest that Finnish has "he" and "it".

Those comedians are usually of the "idiotically piss-drunk and not getting any" variety.

Not gonna lie and say that all who identify as such are truly what they are. Much like teenage bisexuality. That said!! I know there are people who are truly, in their core self, genderqueer. You may not understand it, but it doesn't mean that they do not exist.
There are people who truly, in their core self, believe they are Napoleon Bonaparte. That doesn't mean they are. Look, I usually am totally the "perception equals reality" type guy here, arguing that your perception defines your reality - but this is a situation where a given person's rare disfunction is trying to define reality for everyone. It's entirely accurate to portray this as a case of Les Nessman's office walls taken to ridiculous extremes.

I'll be honest--I can't help but be insulted when someone uses the phrase, "You can't possibly understand". I can understand it perfectly well. I just have very strong reservations about believing it on the basis of my own observations.
I can understand that, but at the same time, unless we are experiencing it or be "in it" sometimes it is harder to understand.

Now of course there are times like when my parents goes "you don't know the real world, so you can't possibly understand" that is a bit different since I am 38 years old, own my own home, married, and keep up with the world. I know the real world that I experience thus far. I may not know the real world of underground drug lord, or the real world of espionage, or real world of celeberties.

I think there are some psychological aspect that I will never understand like why does psycho killers enjoy and do what they do, why does people follow blindly with Kardashen family, why does people believe Jesus is the son of God back then but won't believe if someone said they are son of God now?

Yes, we can justify by what WE believe and what WE understand, but unless we ARE in those group, we will never truly understand on their level.

I just used the general phrasing that usually gets used, which I personally find less hostile than "You may not understand it, but...", for the record, which I read as a patronizing head-pat.

Also for the record, I have no problem with anyone being truly gender neutral or gender-free or whatever. But since we were speaking from personal experience, the people I know who claim to be such, are also the same crowd who tends to flock to anything fringe or controversial for the sake of it.

Much like I can't help but be insulted when someone comments the way you did on a subject they cannot comprehend due to the only way to comprehend it, is to live it.
"You can't comprehend unless you've lived it" is a weak statement with no logical basis. I comprehend things everyday that I am not, or that I don't do. If I didn't, I would be a jellyfish. Where is the arbitrary line between things you have to live to understand, and things you can understand without living?

Frankly, it's as offensive to me as anything you find offensive. Questioning something is in no way tantamount to misunderstanding it. I get the idea, whether you think I do or not. Doesn't mean it doesn't feel a certain way to me.

#135

Null

Null

What could possibly be offensive about devaluing or outright dismissing something that is at the core of another person's life experience?

For my own part, I've never suffered any particular confusion about my gender or sexuality, but that doesn't mean I think it's not a major conflict in some people's psyche. I don't know what that's like, and I don't really want to. But I can't think that having the "you" that you think you are, being completely at odds with who you appear to be to the world, is easy.

You're right. My original statement was probably a bit crass. I retract that, because frankly, as I said, I couldn't care less if you are or aren't genderqueer. My statement wasn't intended to devalue, it was more a comment on my personal experience with people I've met who self-identify as such. They tend to be the same Che shirt wearing, homeopathic medicine crowd that eschews things they think are societal impositions by choice. I in no way meant to imply anything negative about genderqueer, because I truly don't care if someone is. One way or the other.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Look, the only person I knew on the forum as possibly being an alternate option was Ame, and she's always referred to herself as a she, which I've always supported and accepted. If not including half a dozen options, some of which I had never heard about, in a poll on a forum makes me a raging douche nozzle, then there's no way for me to avoid pissing someone off inadvertently.

Maybe realize that not everyone is out to make others feel small with their posts, eh?

It's hilarious.

1. Someone is embarrassed by the gentle chiding of other members for using "she" when they should have said "he".
2. They start a half-way humorous poll about the situation and the confusion this misunderstanding is causing.
3. They get keel hauled are gently chided for not including every possible option in their poll.
4. I, laughing at the expected outcome, am, er, "gently chided" as well.
5. Those throwing insults around can't help but use sexually charged insults - further generating hilarity.

But to clear things up, I was unaware we had people on the board who preferred to be called by pronouns other than he or she. I know we have members of the transgender community, but to my knowledge they all prefer one or the other of the two primary pronouns.

I would like those who don't to speak up and tell me how they prefer to be referred to, otherwise I can't change my behavior. Third parties telling me that "some people on this board" prefer a different pronoun doesn't help me one bit, although white knighting is a noble profession because there may be some who are too timid to step into the fray and assert themselves.

To those who feel that way, I want you to know that while we may joke around on occasion, we will absolutely respect you and your decision. As this thread demonstrates this board is almost fanatic in defense of LGBT community.

Keep in mind that while gender, sex, and sexual preference are related they are separable, and this thread is primarily requesting people indicate preference of pronoun.

Minor ranting that might derail here and there since I am typing as my thought formulate.

I am never a fan of the phrase "You just don't understand," but at the same times there are things in this world that we comprehend it, but just don't understand it. I know that sounds kinda strange, but there are things that unless we feel it for ourselves, it is hard to understand 100% of it. It is like child abuse. We all comprehend what it is. It is a horrible thing, but unless you were in it, there are some aspect that effect you emotionally and mentally to a whole new level. I personally wouldn't wish the life that I had when I was in Thailand on anyone. There are people out there who can empathize my situation and may comprehend the life I may have, but it will be from all the reading or what you experience yourself.

It is similar to gender, sex, and sexual preference. (I'm gonna use Shego on this one since she did tell her story on this board) I personally never experience the horror, the emotional impact, and psychological impact of her own family turn on her because of her sexual preference. I have read about it. I have seen TV shows about it (dramatization are sometimes not accurate), but I haven't personally felt the impact from it so there are some aspect of understanding beyond my reach. I have some friends who went similar path and so I can empathize with the situation.

I guess what I am trying to say is that, while I may not understand it totally, I respect people's situation. Sure it may not make sense to YOU (the general you not anyone particular) but that doesn't make it wrong does it? (well there are some things we know what is right and wrong) I love this forum. I have learn a lot from everyone. My world has expanded more and more when people tell me their stories and situation.

Well. I hope it makes sense :) It did when I am typing this, but I may edit later after I have breakfast and something to drink.

I am never a fan of the phrase "You just don't understand,"
Everyone has a different life experience. Shego may rightly claim that I couldn't understand, but conversely she cannot understand my perspective either. Through life experience we develop lenses through which we interpret objects, events, conversation, interaction, etc. these exist on such a fundamental level that even if we understand they are there, we still aren't aware of them and will never truly be able to figure out whether something we newly experience is actually the way it is, or if we're inferring something about it based on previous experience.

Those that live non-traditional lives (whether by choice or not doesn't matter) can, to some degree, come a little closer to the traditional side because there's so much literature/movies/etc on it. But they can only approach it philosophically, because again - they are interpretting that literature through their own lenses.

I can't live according to Shego's experiences (though I can and do learn from her) and she can't live according to mine.

Throwing "you cannot understand" is just fluff, though.

#174

Dave

Dave

But it is a truism. I can no more understand how it feels to be a woman trapped in a man's body than a transgendered person (of the male -> female persuasion) can understand how it feels to be comfortable in a man's body.

Before you have kids you think you know how it is to have kids. After having them you realize there was no way you could have known.

"You cannot understand" is a legitimate argument in certain circumstances and I'd posit that sexual identity is one of them.

Hmm. That could be the case. The whole kindergarten "friend" thing a bit ago threw me as well - pronouns are simply baked-in the american-english language. I would feel very awkward saying, "Shego is awesome because friend likes almost every edged weapon." Throwing away the pronoun and using friend, in my mind, implies a third person, not the subject of the sentence.
It is interesting to me how our neural pathways are defined by what we learn. In America we often teach children the names of things first. I've heard that children in China are often first taught the relationships they have to others first. Some feel Americans have an unnatural disposition to amassing things, while others feel Chinese have an unnatural loyalty to their family.

I am perhaps more optimistic than you. I suspect that the people I've argued with most vociferously would be great fun to meet in person.
On the other hand, I can't hold a grudge - I can barely remember what a past argument was about, nevermind who it was with. So, to some degree, I can't comprehend that someone may remember the first time I said something that truly offended them and can remember me and the issue because of it.

Perhaps I should have phrased it better? I've personally known people who gave up what they wanted - and perhaps needed - and the behest of their family. It ranges from the simple - telling them to break off their engagement, to the sad - telling them they aren't allowed to be gay, to the horrifying - telling them they can't receive cancer treatment.

The thing is, these are adults, and should determine their own course of action, but they subjugate their will to their family.

This, of course, isn't meant to characterize them entirely, just as the american statement doesn't fit every american. Generalizations are always fraught with peril.

One's loyalty to their family is not a bad thing - but just like consumerism when taken to an extreme it can be harmful.

In fact, I've been friend and teacher to many of them. I merely questioned if this was another example. Feel free to check my posts. Not once did I say that those were bad things. That is YOUR interpretation.

Request denied. If we gave into that request all this sitting around waiting to judge you would be totally worthless now wouldn't it?

So, professor, enlighten us as to the specific connotation you were going for by characterizing people as thus. The popular perception would seem to be "poseurs who have no idea what they think they're representing", but you claim that's not what you're going for.

So what did you mean by that?

#233

Biannoshufu

I would say so, in that posts are usually off the cuff and rarely revised, while drafts are kept private through their many revisions. I'm just sayin' there should be a little bit of slack for people here when folks put their foot in their mouth.
I disagree. I think holding each other to higher standards than off the cuff gives the conversations more value, especially in topics like this.

I had 5 seconds in the pool for how long that would take. I guess I was off by about 20. If it makes you feel any better, then I was that person for a long time, then.

I actually just meant leftist people who support controversial things. But of course you won't believe that. I was kind of wondering why you quoted that earlier as offensive.

And there is controversy. Seriously dude, I'm all for aggressive confrontation, but as far as this thread goes, you need to spend some time working that bedpost out of your ass already. And this is coming from me.

Eh, whatever. I know what I meant. I've explained it. I've apologized for a poor choice of words. (Yes, you can do both, and truly mean both.) The jury cast their vote. So be it.

I'll be honest--I can't help but be insulted when someone uses the phrase, "You can't possibly understand". I can understand it perfectly well. I just have very strong reservations about believing it on the basis of my own observations.
To get things back on track in this thread: Fade, the reason you're insulted is because you can't possibly understand. Deep down, you just don't like being left out.

And yet you are.

Well, I totally disagree on many bases that I won't bother going into. I don't feel left out at all when people say that (is it irony that you are presuming that you understand how I feel?).

In fact, the many ironies of this thread as a whole are incredible.

I wish I was clever enough to commit irony, but instead I was just trying to create a paradox. In a sarcastic comment that doesn't take the discussion seriously because I did all this in my Psychology of Women class in 2004 and don't feel like doing it anymore; plus, I missed the main body of discussion anyway and now it's just time for jokes about umbrellas while chalking up gender as one of those controversial Halforums topics along with quiznos vs subway, steak, and how one wipes his/her/neutral's ass.
