Yeah, we all hoped the disney buyout would infuse some fresh life into it, see some IPs updated to current... but apparently that didn't happen.

Adam Orth is the creative director of Microsoft. What a swell fella. The other guy works at BioWare.

Also of note, this Orth dude has put his Twitter on full lockdown. You can't expand any tweets and a lot of his are hidden compared to when I saw this a few hours ago.

Man, if this doesn't cast some light on Xbox's console plans, I dunno. They muzzled him quick.

Some more magic from him.

If the console industry crashes again like it did in '83, I will not be shedding any tears. A clean slate is needed, as far as I'm concerned.

I guess that's one way to say, "if you don't like it, don't buy our console."

Could have been said more tactfully, but I don't think they believe its a real problem.
I just can't believe that it's true that Microsoft would be so arrogant as to go through with it. There's apparently 30 million 360s that have never had a Live account attached to it. 30 million of 75 million 360s have never been online.

Sadly, in this case, it may not even actually be arrogance. There are so many people working at Microsoft (and worse yet, in charge at Microsoft) who've never lived somewhere that high speed internet access hasn't been available since the advent of broadband that it's scary. I mean, these are the same people who can't figure out how to fix the coffee maker in the break room when it needs to be rinsed, when the coffee maker says "PLEASE PRESS RINSE," right on the front in big, bold print (it needs to be done several times a day). And the same people who are apparently so unobservant who, when Nestea redesigned their Lemon flavored tea cans, and they suddenly looked a lot more like Sprite cans, to avoid confusion the people who are in charge of the people who stock the beverage fridges decided to move the tea away from the Sprite... complained so much about the tea being discontinued that two weeks later they had to put up signs on all of the fridges telling people where the tea was.

Let's not forget, the only way to get to the "Windows start mode" menu (the one that allows you to choose to start in safe mode if you've installed something that's causing crashes) in Windows 8 is to insert a paperclip or other small piece of metal into the back of the case and push the reset button... even if you've installed it on a desktop computer that doesn't have one, because a desktop computer isn't the same as a Surface or Windows Phone.

Sorry Tress, but I can't fathom spending money to play online with a console, especially one that's focused on FPS games which I have zero interest in playing without splitscreen/LAN. PS3 and PC let you do it for free, and not following that model is stupid.

I really don't understand the point of paying Microsoft extra just to play online with everyone. PC, PSP, and Wii versions offer these as a courtesy for buying the damn game.

Xbox Live is one of the primary reasons why I'm going PS4. The other being I only have two god damn RPGs that aren't also a shooter that's The Last Remnant (which I stopped playing halfway through because it was BORING) and Final Fantasy XIII (which I haven't picked up since finishing it, a first for a Final Fantasy). It doesn't help that I can't think of a single Xbox exclusive franchise I actually give a shit about.

My Xbox 360 has been gathering dust for quite a while now.I only turn it on to play Ace Combat.
My next console (if I get one) will be a PS4,too.

Survey is still out what I'll end up going with. I have a WiiU, but if it can't compete I'll look into one of the other consoles. I'd like to see what Microsoft will be offering, as I'm just not satisfied at all with Sony. I mean not backwards compatibility? Are you even fucking trying to impress us over there? That was one of my bigger disappointments with the PS3, was I had all these games that I still liked playing such as the retro collections. Why should I upgrade when I'd have to have the older model still plugged into the TV to get the experience I want? At least Nintendo gets that part right.
I ended up getting a PS3 for Christmas of 2011, and I really only use it for the Bluray player and a few PSN games.
Our 360 we got from Dave and Busters (months and months of half price games with the best ticket payouts).
My preference right now is the 360.

I have a bunch of games I have lined up to play. I think I'm going to give Bioshock: Infinite a play on the Xbox next, followed by Assassin's Creed 3 on the WiiU. Maybe I can decide from there my console preference.

Don't even get me started on Ace Combat. I liked 6 but Assault Horizon was AWFUL. Totally ruined a great series to appeal to the fucking dewchuggers.

I can't really blame them this time around. The architecture of the Cell Processor is so different from what they are using with the PS4 that they can't emulate it on the system, which means they'd have to put it in the hardware and THAT would raise the price obscenely. They are talking about letting people stream PS3 games tot he PS4 somehow but they haven't given any kind of details for it yet.

One my favorite new jabs at Microsoft/Xbox:

and the hits keep coming. Looks like this is going to be a meme:

Oh and for the record he's claiming he was just trolling the other person in the twitter. The other person says the two of them joke like that alot but it's still falling out pretty hard.

You know the 360 was only partially compatible with XBox games, yeah? Like, I could play Barbie Horse Adventure, but not Capcom vs SNK 2. Older PS3's are compatible, but they cut that to make it cheaper to build. It's shitty both ways, but I wouldn't expect the new XBox to let you play much, either.

Exactly, I don't get the big deal being made out of backwards compatibility. The 360 was barely backwards compatible with Xbox games and those that it did play, it played incredibly poorly, to the point where if you bought original Xbox titles to download, it warns you that it's going to be buggy. The first time a console was backwards compatible was a lucky accident. The PS2 had PS1 hardware in it as some sort of sound controller or some shit like that and it was easy enough to just have it play Ps1 games.

It's pretty much impossible to brute force emulate the cell structure of the PS3 now with top of the line PCs, the PS4 (which is basically a really well optimized middle tier graphics card in a bottom tier processor setup) doesn't have a hope in hell of pulling it off. They're not making it backwards compatible to fuck you, they're doing it because it's basically not possible without shipping the PS4 with PS3 hardware inside (and we all know how well that price went over 6 years ago).

I think I'm -over- a need for backwards compatibility. I'd rather the console be cheaper and leaner without the extra hardware/software for emulation.

Back in the day? Sure I liked it. However at this point it doesn't seem to be as big a need for me anymore.

I think at this point if you want to play older games the consoles are so cheap it doesn't matter. Or, you're like me and hoard them, never to let go.

I still own my original SNES and NES, both of which are in perfect working order. I even still sometimes play them, especially the Mega Man X line on SNES.

Who needs backwards compatibility?

Those of us whose parents made us give our old consoles to our cousins. :(
I'm so sorry. I sold my Sega Genesis to my cousin when I was like 13, along with all of my games for it, including the sonic and knuckles combo-cart! And what did I do with that money?

I bought a virtual boy.

:(

And then that cousin ended up destroying the Genesis.

I used a PS1 emulator for awhile and most games ran okay, but that and the PS2 emulator are annoying as shit to get to run correctly (the PS2 emu likes to run things at half speed for some reason).

I bought a launch PS3 a year after they came out (was lucky enough to find one), but never had a PS2, and therefore no games, so the backwards compatibility was wasted on me (plus it had YLOD under warranty after 6 months, got a replacement). I did think I would try to pick up some of the better PS2 games, but it never happened. Probably helped that I moved overseas for 3 years and bought a slim that had no BC (sold before I came home), then came home and sold the launch unit (and my refurbished Xbox 360, my original launch 360 LASTED 4 YEARS before RROD), which also had a horribly noisy fan. Bought the super slim on Black Friday for $200 (sold my launch unit for more than that anyway) and am happy with a brand new and quiet unit that plays blu-rays and games. I don't like the sliding door and form factor as much as the regular slim, but not a deal breaker.

Still have the launch Wii, use it mostly for streaming Netflix. No interest right now in any of the next gen units.
