Schools often have outdated computers. I remember when I was in high school and at home I had a 386, at school in our computer class where I was learning Turbo Pascal, we were coding on 8088s that looked like they'd been hauled out of a dumpster... complete with the old amber monochrome monitors.
But, color me surprised, where I work is making good progress in migrating to 7. We just got a new automation system that runs on 7 (albeit 32 bit because of driver incompatibility with 64), so the biggest hurdle is already cleared. Now it'll just probably be a matter of over time replacing aging PCs running XP with newer ones running 7. We actually have a couple machines running 8 that are used by salespeople. They hate it.
