Games on SALE!

My wife and I considered her getting Monster Hunter 3 so we could play together, but seeing how the Great Jaggi was already an issue for her, and I haven't even touched what some would consider the meat of the game (i.e. the big fucking monsters), we really wouldn't know what she was getting into and wouldn't be sure it's worth the $2o sale price.

But for everyone else, there's still a day to go.

I've never played a monster hunter game. I'd be getting it for the 3DS. Worth it?

I bought it for the Wii U myself. Too good of a price to pass up really.

Again, for the price, I'd say so. It's mostly a hunter gathering game in which you take quarries from a guild and the village and it's pretty repetitive in that way. What breaks up the monotony is that most of the monsters behave differently, attack differently and are hunted differently and personally my favourite part is that the items you harvest from the monsters are used to craft your armor and weapons, which change visually depending on the parts used. This is the best way I can visually show what I mean, using pokemon as the monsters to get the idea across.

Firstly, the demo is a piece of shit. It's there to show long-time Monster Hunter fans that it's a Monster Hunter game, but for new people, it's unfair--too weak of weapons against too strong a foe, with no explanation as to how anything works, and your quest time is reduced from 50 minutes to 15.

I say this because the game itself is entirely the opposite--it will gingerly walk you through how to do things. I think I was four hours in before I got to the first real boss monster hunt. Because of this hand-holding, I've been going through the game slowly. I imagine once I get to fighting colossal-size monsters, I'll be more into it, because I LOVE hunting huge monsters and dinosaurs.

The game is more than that though. It's pretty deep as far as what you do. You can buy some items, but a lot of it must be crafted. To get craft materials, you have to kill things, dig up plants, catch bugs, go fishing, mine for ore. You also have resource points that, with items, are used for the betterment of the village. It's a weird blend of activities, but if you're willing to get into the details of it, it's a great game. Figuring out how a monster behaves and how to take it down means it's more tactical than just bashing the hell out of the creature; you have to be clever.

I told my wife I wasn't getting it for her because she has Style Savvy Trendsetters--I'm pretty sure I fooled her. We'll play between our 3DS's, but she can use the Wii U too if she wants. Keep in mind, the 3DS only has local multiplayer, no online unless you have a Wii U which you can use as a sort of modem for connecting with others (though you don't need the Wii U version of the game; just a Wii U and the relay tools app).[DOUBLEPOST=1391347414,1391347325][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, that's another thing. For $20, it's hundreds of hours of content.

At this point I've spent $80 between a full-price 3DS version, a half-price 3DS version, and a half-price Wii U version. It's probably not worth all that, but $20? Yes.

Adding to the above: it's important to find a weapon you like and that feels good for you to use. You start the game with the basic versions of all twelve weapon types and experimenting is essential. I've been shifting between sword and shield, dual blades, gunlance, and longsword, dabbling with the great sword here and there, but after these past few months of avoiding ranged weapons, I think I finally found what I love with the bow. Granted, it helped watching a quick video on Youtube about it, but since I got into using it, I spent the whole morning playing. Didn't even realize the hours were passing.

I should probably shower.

Wife opened 3DS 10 minutes ago. "Did you ... you got it for me? :')"

She's so cute ... but now she's reading the manual. What kind of freak does that?

So, decided to pick up Monster Hunter 3 for the 3DS (Since I don't own a WiiU.)

No online multiplayer for the 3DS version? What the figgity fuck?

I picked up Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. So far, I'm kind of liking it. I like the fact that you aren't entirely squishy as a magic user. You can REALLY tell that this was originally intended to be a MMORPG, lots of "collect 5 bear asses" quests.

I actually just finished off Dawnguard in Skyrim (both sides) and instead of jumping over to DragonbornDLC I picked up KoA too. Just about to fire it up myself.

I picked it up as well. My friend Took has been bugging me to get it. I'm not sure when I'll start playing, since I'm falling behind on real life as it is, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it, as I thought the demo was pretty good.

I dunno. I played the demo back when, and on the one hand, it was gorgeous, and on the other, it was meh. I'm looking forward to reviews from people who got the whole game, but I had the impression it was a game I'd "quite like". But I don't have the time to play a 200+ hours "okay" game.

I played the demo and liked it, but never bought it. Then played it for a bit when it went free on PSN.

I dug it for awhile, but honestly, it felt incredibly grindy after awhile.

Been trying out the bow based off your recommendation and am really liking it so far. I remember liking the gunlance when I was playing with others before on the psp.

My only gripe is that I'm still so early in the game that the second bow I can get requires Wroggi parts. I'm having a hard time killing the Great Wroggi with the beginner bow.

I really need to start learning my traps and bombs and stop just brute-forcing the quests.

I just finished a full set of Jaggi gunner armor to give you an idea where I am at. I think I also managed to complete all quests up to two stars yesterday.

I thought I would have a harder time breaking items off with the bow, like the king's fill, but I've actually found it easier. I tend to use the power coating first then the exhaust coating but I'm looking forward to being able to use poison as well. Using so much coating is getting expensive though.

I'm almost done with three stars, but I didn't realize there were different armors for blademaster vs gunner. No wonder I was dying--I was running around with just a hat.

Humble Bundle and Double Fine present: Amnesia Fortnight 2014

Once again you can donate in order to vote on what game concepts Double Fine should make into prototypes. You'll also get to play the prototypes, as well as last year's prototypes. Beat the average and you can vote on what project Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors) heads up. Pay over $35 and you get a Blu-ray of the Fortnight.

While I found this to be fun last year, I just don't think I have the time right now. Lots of people must be eager for this, the average is over $6 already.

Personal taste, but I prefer the Sid Meier Bundle going on at the same time :p
If I had the money, I'd get it. Though a friend of mine got it recently and already owned a copy of Civ V. So he gifted it to me.

...I was up until 8 AM the next day playing it. It's already deleted from my computer. It's a bad, bad game.
