Eh, you might could make that argument (though they didn't replace Rachel in season 5). Not every, but most of them. They were about "Protagonist and friends" as opposed to just "friends." At least that's how I saw it... but it's been 30 years for most of these, so my memory might be unreliable. YMMV.Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Those shows I mentioned all had characters who got the spotlight in different episodes. Not every episode of M.A.S.H centered on Hawkeye nor every ep of Taxi focused on Alex unlike say the Lucy Show or . Tons of them focused on the other characters in the..... wait for it... ensemble.
I would also like to add WKRP in Cincinnati to my list of sitcoms that had an ensemble before Friends.
